How Scientists Read Ancient Scrolls Without Unrolling Them

Researchers can read parts of a rolled, unopened manuscript by digitally mapping its interior with X-ray tomography, tracing the papyrus surfaces in three dimensions, flattening those surfaces computationally, and then interpreting the ink marks. The method is called virtual unrolling or digital unrolling. It avoids the physical opening that could destroy a fragile scroll, but it is not a magic scan: imaging, surface reconstruction, ink detection and scholarly reading are separate stages, and success with one portion does not mean an entire scroll has been recovered.

What “virtual unrolling” means

Virtual unrolling creates a readable, two-dimensional representation from a document that remains physically rolled. A scanner records the object’s internal structure as a volume. Software then identifies the thin papyrus sheets, follows their curves through the volume and mathematically transforms a selected surface into a flat image. The flattened image remains linked to its original location, so researchers can move between the apparent page and the three-dimensional evidence.

The artifact itself is never opened in this process. “Unrolling” describes the digital representation, not a mechanical action performed on the manuscript. The approach was demonstrated on Herculaneum papyri in a 2016 Nature Communications paper, which reported revealing and deciphering text inside unopened scrolls with X-ray phase-contrast tomography (Nature Communications, 2016).

Why the Herculaneum papyri are the key test case

The collection was carbonized when Mount Vesuvius erupted in 79 CE. About 1,800 scrolls were discovered in the eighteenth century, and the National Endowment for the Humanities describes them as the only library from the classical world to survive in its entirety. Their contents include philosophical and literary works that could materially expand what is known about ancient thought (National Endowment for the Humanities).

Carbonization preserved the papyri as coal-like cylinders, but it also made them brittle. Traditional attempts to open some scrolls caused tearing, loss of layers or permanent distortion. A scan-based method offers a way to investigate the contents while keeping the object intact for future work and for independent verification.

NEH reports concrete milestones rather than a complete reading of the collection: the word porphyras (“purple”) was identified first, and three student researchers later decoded a first full passage. Those achievements show that writing can be recovered; they do not establish that every scroll, or even every layer of a successful scan, has been read.

How scientists read a scroll without opening it

1. Capture a three-dimensional X-ray volume

The first step is volumetric imaging. X-ray tomography measures how the beam passes through the scroll from many angles and reconstructs those measurements into a stack of three-dimensional data. The 2016 demonstration used X-ray phase-contrast tomography, a technique that records changes in the X-ray wave caused by boundaries and materials as well as ordinary absorption differences (the 2016 paper).

More recent Vesuvius Challenge releases describe reconstructed micro-CT volumes. Micro-CT can provide very fine spatial detail, but the useful resolution depends on the scanner, the scroll’s size and density, acquisition settings and reconstruction quality. A volume is not automatically a readable page: it is a geometric record from which pages must be found.

2. Locate and segment the papyrus layers

Software and researchers identify the surfaces that separate one papyrus layer from another. This is a segmentation problem: each surface must be traced through thousands or millions of voxels while preserving its continuity. Carbonized sheets may be compressed together, folded sharply, torn, wrinkled or locally indistinguishable from one another. A small tracing error can jump to a neighboring layer and make the resulting “page” unreadable.

Modern computer-vision systems can assist by proposing surfaces, but specialists still need to inspect difficult areas and correct errors. A 2026 IEEE/CVF WACV paper on diffeomorphic spiral fitting describes experiments on high-resolution scans of two scrolls; that scope should not be generalized to every Herculaneum specimen (WACV 2026 paper).

3. Flatten a selected surface digitally

Once a continuous surface has been mapped, a geometric transformation lays it out as a sheet. The algorithm must account for the surface’s curvature and for distortions introduced when the scroll was rolled, heated and compacted. Flattening too aggressively can stretch or overlap features; flattening too little leaves writing at changing angles and makes it harder to inspect.

The output is an image that resembles a page, but it is not a photograph taken through the papyrus. Every pixel represents data sampled from a particular path through the three-dimensional volume. Researchers can therefore return to the original volume to test whether a mark is genuinely on the chosen layer or is an artifact of the mapping.

4. Detect ink and interpret the marks

Ink detection is a distinct stage from flattening. Herculaneum ink is carbon-based, as is the damaged papyrus itself, so the two can have very similar X-ray signatures. Image enhancement, statistical analysis and machine-learning models can make faint contrasts visible, but a highlighted pattern is not automatically a letter.

Experts compare neighboring traces, writing direction, letter forms, spacing and the behavior of marks across the surface. Papyrologists and classicists then assess whether a sequence is a plausible character, word or passage. The NEH milestones—porphyras and a full passage—represent interpreted readings, not merely pixels that a program colored on a screen.

What each technical stage can and cannot establish

Stage What it provides What remains uncertain
Tomography A non-destructive three-dimensional record of internal structure. Whether ink contrasts sufficiently with carbonized papyrus to be detected.
Segmentation A traced papyrus surface within that volume. Whether the trace stays on one physical layer through folds, tears and compressed regions.
Digital flattening A page-like image linked to the source surface. Whether geometric distortion, gaps or overlaps have altered the apparent writing.
Ink enhancement Candidate marks that may correspond to writing. Whether marks are ink, damage, papyrus texture or processing artifacts.
Scholarly interpretation A proposed reading grounded in language, script and context. How much of the scroll can be read and whether independent specialists agree.

This chain matters because progress at one stage does not solve the others. A sharper scan cannot repair a wrongly traced layer, and a successful segmentation does not guarantee that the ink is visible.

Imaging approaches and the evidence currently available

Approach or resource Role in digital unrolling Evidence and qualification
X-ray phase-contrast tomography Captures internal structure and phase-related contrast for unopened scrolls. Used in the 2016 demonstration that reported virtual unrolling and deciphering (Nature Communications).
Reconstructed micro-CT Provides high-resolution volumetric data for layer tracing and text recovery. Vesuvius Challenge datasets are distributed as reconstructed volumes; exact resolution varies by scan and file.
Computer-vision surface tracing Follows curved papyrus layers through the volume. The WACV 2026 metadata describes experiments on two scroll scans, not a universal solution (WACV 2026).
Vesuvius Challenge open data Lets researchers download reconstructed scans for virtual unwrapping, segmentation and text recovery. The AWS registry lists OME-Zarr multiscale data, public S3 access without an AWS account and additions as scans are reconstructed (AWS Registry of Open Data).

What has actually been read

The strongest public claims are specific. The NEH account documents the recovered word porphyras and a first complete passage decoded by three students. The 2016 publication reports portions of text revealed inside unopened papyri. Together, these establish that virtual methods can expose writing in at least some scanned regions.

They do not establish that the entire Herculaneum library has been deciphered. A scroll can contain many meters of tightly packed surface, and only a fraction may be segmented or legible in a given project. Even a “complete” digital surface would not necessarily yield complete text if ink is missing, damaged or hidden by imaging limitations.

Search results have also circulated titles claiming complete virtual unwrapping and reading of a rolled Herculaneum papyrus in 2026. The full paper and its institutional or papyrological review are not established here, so those headlines should not be treated as proof of a universally accepted first complete scroll. Check the final publication and expert reception before repeating such a claim.

Why carbon ink is difficult to see in a carbonized scroll

Many ordinary X-ray methods distinguish materials by density or composition. In these artifacts, both the writing medium and the support were transformed by heat into carbon-rich material. The contrast between a stroke and the surrounding sheet can therefore be extremely small. Ink may also lie at an angle to the scan, be spread by compression or be interrupted by cracks.

Researchers compensate by combining acquisition physics with computation. Phase-sensitive measurements can reveal boundaries that absorption images miss. Multiscale volumes allow a broad search followed by inspection at finer detail. Surface-aware rendering samples voxels along the papyrus sheet rather than through a fixed horizontal plane. None of these operations creates information that was never recorded; they improve the chance of separating a real mark from noise.

How an open-data reader can explore the scans

The Vesuvius Challenge collection is intended for computational work, not casual viewing. Its AWS registry entry lists reconstructed micro-CT volumes in OME-Zarr multiscale format and says public S3 access does not require an AWS account. The registry is updated as additional scans are reconstructed (dataset registry).

  1. Read the dataset documentation first. Confirm the current scan identifiers, coordinate conventions, file layout, citation requirements and license conditions.
  2. Choose a multiscale volume. Start at a coarse level to understand the scroll’s orientation and reserve fine levels for a targeted region.
  3. Use volume-rendering or array tools that support OME-Zarr. Keep the original data unchanged and record the software version and parameters used for any derived image.
  4. Inspect candidate layers in three dimensions. Do not interpret a bright or dark line from a single slice; follow it through adjacent slices to determine whether it belongs to a continuous papyrus surface.
  5. Flatten only a traced surface. Save the surface coordinates with the flattened image so another person can reproduce the mapping.
  6. Separate detection from reading. Mark candidate strokes first, then evaluate letter shapes and words with appropriate palaeographic and linguistic expertise.
  7. Report uncertainty. Distinguish a machine-generated enhancement, a proposed character and a reading that has received independent scholarly review.

Large volumes require substantial storage, memory and processing time. The registry’s documentation is the authoritative place to check current files and reuse terms; those details can change as new reconstructions are published.

Does digital unrolling damage a historical scroll?

The imaging and computational steps are designed to avoid physically opening the artifact. That is the central conservation advantage over forcing apart carbonized layers. Scanning still requires access to specialist facilities and normally requires the object to be positioned for imaging, so conservators must manage transport, supports, radiation protocols and handling. “Non-destructive” should therefore be understood as avoiding the act of unrolling, not as meaning that no physical logistics or institutional risk exists.

Digital work also preserves a reversible record. If a segmentation decision proves wrong, the surface can be remapped without altering the scroll. The original volume remains the reference against which improved algorithms and alternative scholarly readings can be tested.

How to judge a new virtual-unrolling claim

  • Identify the scan. Is the imaging modality, facility and reconstruction described?
  • Check the covered area. Does the result concern one small surface patch, a section, a whole circumference or a whole scroll?
  • Ask whether ink was measured. A beautiful flattened surface is not evidence that writing is visible.
  • Look for validation. Are layer traces, coordinates and processing steps available for independent inspection?
  • Separate software output from a reading. Candidate marks require expert interpretation and, ideally, review by other specialists.
  • Read the qualification carefully. “Text recovered” can mean a word, a passage or an extensive transcription; it does not by itself mean the collection has been read.

Why the method matters beyond one library

Virtual unrolling offers a general strategy for manuscripts that are rolled, folded, sealed or otherwise inaccessible. The transferable idea is not a particular scanner but the combination of volumetric imaging, surface geometry and material-aware text analysis. Similar workflows could help conservators examine objects that cannot safely be opened, while leaving the original available for future technologies.

Herculaneum remains an unusually demanding benchmark because it combines severe thermal damage, dense winding layers, ancient handwriting and high cultural stakes. Every successful segment provides both historical content and a test of whether algorithms can handle the physical distortions found in real artifacts.

The practical bottom line

Researchers read an unopened scroll by turning it into data, not by seeing through it with a single X-ray photograph. Tomography records the volume; segmentation traces the papyrus; geometric reconstruction flattens a layer; image analysis highlights possible ink; and scholars decide what the marks mean. The process can protect fragile manuscripts and has already produced specific words and passages from Herculaneum, but it remains a staged investigation with incomplete coverage and genuine uncertainty. Open scan data makes participation possible, while careful attribution and conservative wording remain essential for claims about what has—and has not—been read.
