Scientists usually measure a deep-sea animal without touching it. An ROV records the animal beside two laser dots separated by a known distance—10 centimeters (4 inches) on NOAA’s ROV Deep Discoverer—so analysts can convert pixels in the video frame into centimeters. When the animal’s angle, body shape or position makes that ruler unreliable, synchronized stereo cameras or overlapping images used for photogrammetry provide depth and a three-dimensional measurement. Navigation sensors and environmental metadata then tie each length to a position, habitat and uncertainty estimate.
Why canyon animals are difficult to measure
Deep-sea canyons combine steep walls, irregular rock, suspended sediment, currents and darkness. A scientist cannot place a caliper on a fish, mussel or soft-bodied invertebrate, and an ROV pilot may see the animal only briefly as the vehicle moves past. The camera can be tilted relative to the seabed, the animal can be partly hidden, and the apparent length can change when the view is oblique.

For that reason, a reported length is not simply a count of pixels. It is a scaled measurement tied to camera geometry, vehicle position and the exact video frame. A reliable workflow records the image, the scale or 3D reconstruction used, the animal’s orientation and the conditions that limit precision.
The laser dots act as a ruler in the video
How the scale is placed
An ROV carries two parallel lasers that project bright dots onto the seafloor, a rock or the animal’s surroundings. The distance between the dots is known from calibration. NOAA states that the two lasers on ROV Deep Discoverer are spaced 10 centimeters (4 inches) apart and can be used to measure organisms or objects. If the dots appear in the same frame as an animal, an analyst can determine how many image pixels correspond to 10 centimeters and apply that scale to a body length measured along the same image plane.

The method is non-contact: the vehicle holds station or passes at a controlled distance while the cameras and lasers record. The frame is normally annotated with the animal’s identification, time and location so a later analyst can return to the original evidence rather than relying on a typed number.
What a laser measurement can and cannot tell you
A single camera and a pair of dots give a two-dimensional measurement. It works best when the animal is close to the plane defined by the lasers and the body axis is visible. A fish angled toward or away from the camera, a crab partly behind rubble, or a flexible animal whose endpoints are hidden can produce an ambiguous length. If the laser dots fall on a surface at a different distance from the animal, the scale is also geometrically mismatched.
NOAA Professional Paper NMFS 16 illustrates how lasers can serve two purposes in one frame: red lasers provided a 10-centimeter scale, while green lasers marked a fixed 144-centimeter transect width in imagery collected at 2,518 meters. The small scale supports organism measurements; the wider reference supports counts or density estimates across a known strip of seafloor.
When stereo cameras add depth
A stereo system uses two synchronized cameras separated by a measured baseline. The same feature appears at slightly different horizontal positions in the two images. That parallax allows software to estimate the feature’s distance from the cameras and reconstruct a 3D position. Endpoints such as a fish’s snout and tail can then be measured in space instead of being treated as if they lie on one flat image.
Stereo is especially useful when an animal is not parallel to the laser plane, when the ROV views a steep wall, or when the body has a meaningful vertical component. It still requires careful calibration of each camera, the camera pair and the timing between frames. A target that is moving, blurred or hidden in one camera cannot be reconstructed reliably.

In a cited deep-sea megafauna comparison, both stereo and mono-laser systems achieved less than ±1 millimeter measurement error and precision under the test conditions. That result describes those instruments and tests; it is not a universal accuracy value for every species, camera range or canyon scene.
Photogrammetry reconstructs a larger 3D scene
Photogrammetry estimates three-dimensional structure from many two-dimensional images. During an ROV pass, the cameras collect hundreds or thousands of overlapping frames. Software identifies visual landmarks that recur from one frame to the next, calculates the camera positions, and builds a mosaic or 3D model. A laser-scaled control image supplies real-world dimensions, allowing the model to be expressed in centimeters or meters rather than arbitrary software units.
A practical photogrammetry sequence
- Keep the camera geometry stable. Use a fixed focal length and high-resolution imagery. Changing zoom or focus during a pass complicates the reconstruction.
- Overlap adjacent frames. The recommended sequence uses roughly 60–80% overlap so software can match the same rocks, shells or other landmarks in successive views.
- Capture multiple directions. Oblique and cross-view images help reveal height, overhangs and body curvature that a single forward-looking pass misses.
- Include a scale control. Record a laser-scaled frame or another calibrated reference in the scene. Without a known dimension, the model can have a convincing shape but an arbitrary scale.
- Check the model against the video. Remove frames with motion blur, suspended particles or poor overlap, then compare reconstructed endpoints with the original images.
Photogrammetry is valuable for a mussel bed, a colony on a canyon wall or a large animal that cannot be captured in one well-aligned frame. It costs more processing time than reading a laser-scaled still, and soft tissue, uniform sediment and moving animals provide fewer stable landmarks.
Navigation turns a length measurement into a transect measurement
Animal size and animal density require different spatial information. A laser pair can establish the scale of one image, but a survey also needs to know how far the ROV traveled and how much seabed was viewed. A Doppler velocity log (DVL) estimates vehicle motion relative to the bottom. An ultra-short baseline (USBL) acoustic system estimates the vehicle’s position relative to a ship or transponder network.
In a NOAA/NMFS study from 2016, DVL distance estimates were within 0.8–1.0% of known feature lengths in the tested setup. USBL estimates differed by 3.2–5.0% over the same test lengths. Those figures are performance results for the reported test conditions, not correction factors that can be applied automatically to every dive.

Transect width is not necessarily constant. Camera altitude, camera tilt and the relief of a canyon floor change the portion of seabed inside the field of view. Treating a steep, irregular wall as a flat strip can bias animals-per-square-meter calculations even when individual body lengths are well scaled. Analysts therefore combine navigation, laser references and scene geometry when calculating sampled area.

1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteWhat scientists do on a canyon dive
1. Calibrate before collecting measurements
Before the survey, the team verifies camera focus, resolution, lens or focal-length settings, stereo timing and the known spacing of the lasers. Calibration targets or control imagery establish the relationship between image coordinates and physical distances. The vehicle’s navigation systems are checked so timestamps, depth and position can be synchronized with video.
2. Plan a view that exposes the endpoints
Pilots try to hold a repeatable altitude and keep the animal broadside when a 2D laser measurement is planned. They avoid casting shadows over the lasers and allow enough time for the animal, dots and relevant substrate to appear together. If the body is angled, partly concealed or vertically distributed, the team records additional passes for stereo or photogrammetry instead of forcing a single-frame estimate.
3. Record the frame and its context
ROV video is timestamped and annotated. A useful record includes the taxon or working identification, the frame or clip, depth, coordinates, dive and vehicle, camera view, laser spacing, orientation and any visible obstruction. The environmental context can include temperature, salinity and oxygen, along with the ocean region and habitat type.
4. Measure or reconstruct
For a laser-scaled frame, the analyst marks biologically defined endpoints—such as the tip of a shell, snout or tail—and converts the pixel distance using the laser separation. For stereo, the software matches corresponding points and calculates their 3D coordinates. For photogrammetry, the analyst builds the model, applies the laser-scaled control and measures the reconstructed body or colony.

5. Quantify uncertainty instead of hiding it
The final record should state whether the animal was parallel to the scale, whether both endpoints were visible, how many views supported the result and whether navigation or seabed relief affected the estimate. A soft-bodied animal with a curved or contracting body may have no single objectively sharp endpoint. In that case, a qualified range or a note about the ambiguous feature is more honest than extra decimal places.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Choosing among the three measurement approaches
| Method | Dimensional information | Laser visibility | Orientation sensitivity | Typical role in a canyon survey |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Mono camera with paired lasers | Scaled 2D length in a frame | Requires the known laser dots or another visible scale | High when the animal is oblique, tilted or at a different range than the dots | Fast measurements of clearly exposed animals and objects |
| Stereo cameras | 3D positions and lengths from parallax | Does not depend on placing both dots on the animal, but requires calibrated camera geometry | Lower than a single oblique view when both cameras see the endpoints | Animals with depth, vertical orientation or difficult alignment |
| Photogrammetry | 3D model or mosaic from overlapping images | Needs a laser-scaled control or other known dimension to set absolute scale | Handles complex views when landmarks remain visible across frames | Large scenes, colonies, relief and repeated measurements from many viewpoints |
No method wins in every situation. A visible 10-centimeter ruler is usually the quickest answer for a clean frame. Stereo is a better geometric solution for a single animal whose body extends through depth. Photogrammetry is justified when the scientific question concerns a structure, colony or habitat patch rather than one isolated silhouette.
Where measurement error enters
Camera angle and range
Perspective changes apparent size. If the scale and animal are at different distances, the same pixel-to-centimeter conversion does not apply equally to both. An oblique body can also hide its true endpoint behind another part of the animal. Stereo or multiple viewpoints reduce, but do not automatically eliminate, this problem.
Motion and visibility
ROV movement, animal motion, currents and suspended particles blur edges. Tentacles, fins or tails may move between the instant the lasers are visible and the instant the endpoint is clearest. Analysts should retain the original clip and explain which frame supplied each endpoint.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Canyon relief and altitude
On a flat bottom, a nearly constant altitude can approximate a stable field of view. In a canyon, ledges and walls change that geometry continuously. A fixed transect width can therefore overcount exposed habitat in one section and undercount it in another unless altitude, orientation and relief are incorporated.
Best Value
Navigation uncertainty
DVL and USBL errors affect the distance and area assigned to observations, even when the animal’s own length is measured accurately. The navigation estimate, sensor configuration and test performance belong in the survey record so later users can judge whether a density comparison is meaningful.
How the method is used in canyon biology
NOAA’s EX1304L1 Northeast U.S. Canyons expedition explicitly listed laser imaging to estimate mussel and associated-fauna sizes. In a mussel bed, the same video can support several measurements: shell length for individual animals, the dimensions of neighboring organisms and a transect-based count of associated fauna. Laser-scaled frames provide the local ruler, while vehicle navigation and scene geometry support the sampled-area calculation.
NOAA’s Benthic Deepwater Animal Identification Guide connects observations with taxon, depth, coordinates, ocean region, temperature, salinity, oxygen and the source dive. Linking a length to that metadata matters because an animal’s size is interpretable only alongside where and under what conditions it was observed. A specimen image or video frame also lets another analyst check the identification and endpoint choices.
What a reproducible measurement record contains
- The original timestamped ROV frame or video segment.
- Laser spacing and the calibration information for the camera or stereo rig.
- The endpoint definition used for that animal or structure.
- Whether the view was mono, stereo or a photogrammetric reconstruction.
- Animal orientation, visibility, motion and any obstruction.
- ROV altitude, camera orientation and relevant seabed relief.
- DVL or USBL navigation data used for distance or area calculations.
- Taxonomic identification, depth, coordinates, dive, ocean region and environmental measurements.
- An uncertainty statement that distinguishes instrument performance from scene-specific ambiguity.
The central principle is simple: the animal is measured against a calibrated reference, not against the screen alone. Lasers provide that reference for a clean frame; stereo and photogrammetry extend it into three dimensions; navigation and metadata explain where the measurement belongs in the canyon landscape.
