Scientists measure ocean acidification by tracking several parts of seawater’s carbonate system—not by relying on a single pH reading. They pair chemical measurements with observations and experiments on marine life, then use models to explore how effects may spread through ecosystems. The result is a more complete picture of where conditions are changing and how organisms respond.

What scientists measure in seawater

NOAA describes four core carbonate-system measurements: pH, partial pressure of carbon dioxide (pCO2), total alkalinity (TA), and dissolved inorganic carbon (DIC). Each describes a different feature of seawater chemistry:

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

  • pH tracks hydrogen-ion activity. A lower pH means greater acidity.
  • pCO2 indicates the pressure exerted by carbon dioxide dissolved in seawater.
  • Total alkalinity describes seawater’s capacity to buffer changes in acidity.
  • Dissolved inorganic carbon represents non-biological carbon dissolved as carbon dioxide, bicarbonate, and carbonate.

Researchers measure two of these parameters to calculate the others and characterize the carbonate system. A pH reading alone therefore cannot describe every aspect of the chemistry. NOAA explains the variables and their relationships in its overview of ocean acidification and monitoring guidance.

Why aragonite saturation matters

Scientists also track aragonite saturation, often written as Ωar. Aragonite is a form of calcium carbonate used by some organisms to build shells or skeletons. Saturation indicates how favorable seawater is for forming or maintaining calcium-carbonate structures; it is not interchangeable with pH and does not, by itself, predict the response of every organism. NOAA includes pCO2, pH, and aragonite saturation among its ocean-acidification indicators and data resources.

How measurements are collected

Different observing methods trade off repeat measurements, geographic reach, and detail about depth or nearby organisms. They complement rather than replace one another. NOAA describes the following approaches in its monitoring overview.

Method What it contributes Important limitation
Research cruises Water samples from selected depths provide water-column context and carbonate-chemistry measurements. A CTD measures conductivity, temperature, and depth; rosettes commonly carry Niskin bottles to collect samples. Cruises can also measure oxygen, nutrients, and biological properties, and provide reference measurements for checking other observing tools. Measurements are made during visits rather than as a continuous record at one location.
Buoys and moorings Fixed platforms repeatedly measure conditions at a location, building time series. NOAA describes sensors that measure pCO2 at intervals, along with platforms such as wave gliders and saildrones. Repeated observations at a site do not provide the same broad spatial or depth coverage as a cruise.
Ships of opportunity Instrumented commercial or other vessels collect underway measurements along their routes, extending coverage into remote or less frequently sampled waters. Coverage follows transit routes rather than providing uniform measurements everywhere.
Reef and coastal monitoring Chemistry measurements can be paired with benthic surveys, calcification accretion units, and observations of coral cover, algae, calcifiers, and fish communities. These observations describe local conditions and communities, not the entire ocean.

In practical terms, cruises help establish spatial and depth context, while fixed platforms show how conditions change over time at particular sites. Ships of opportunity add measurements along travel routes, and reef surveys link local chemistry with local organisms. NOAA’s data resources and ecosystem indicators synthesize observations for users; dashboards do not replace the underlying measurements.

How scientists connect chemistry to marine life

Controlled experiments reveal sensitivity

In laboratory experiments, researchers vary conditions such as pH, temperature, or other carbonate-system variables and observe behavioral or physiological responses. They may examine different life stages to identify which organisms or stages are sensitive to particular conditions. Experiments help isolate possible drivers of a response, while observations in the ocean show organisms in their real environmental context. NOAA describes these approaches in its biological-response overview.

Field observations show what organisms experience

Researchers can pair chemistry measurements with biological observations from ships, reef surveys, and uncrewed platforms. The federal strategic plan recommends measuring chemistry and biology at the same time and place where possible. Biological measures may include functional-group biomass, species composition, physiology, population dynamics, and changes at the community level. Such paired observations help researchers assess relationships and possible mechanisms; a correlation in the field alone does not establish that acidification caused a particular ecological change. The recommendation and measurement categories appear in the 2023 federal strategic plan.

Satellite observations can reveal broad surface patterns, such as phytoplankton growth, but NOAA notes that this work requires ground-truthing with direct ocean measurements. Remote sensing complements—not substitutes for—measurements in the water.

Models explore effects across ecosystems

Ecosystem models can combine information about species responses and relationships such as predator–prey interactions to explore possible effects on food webs, fisheries, and other resources. NOAA cautions that ecosystem feedbacks are complex and that model uncertainty matters when results are used for management. Models extend what observations and experiments can examine, but their projections should be interpreted with those uncertainties in view.

What ocean acidification can mean for organisms

When seawater absorbs carbon dioxide, chemical reactions produce more hydrogen ions and lower pH. Increasing acidity also reduces the saturation or availability of calcium carbonate minerals used by many marine organisms to build shells and skeletons. NOAA describes this pathway in its ocean-acidification overview.

That mechanism identifies a risk, not a uniform biological outcome. Species and ecosystems can respond differently, and laboratory sensitivity does not automatically predict the scale of an effect in the wild. Temperature, salinity, oxygen, and other environmental conditions also help shape the setting in which organisms experience changing chemistry. NOAA’s cruise guidance includes oxygen among the conditions researchers may measure, while experiments can vary temperature alongside carbonate-system conditions.

How to read monitoring results

A useful assessment draws on multiple measurements and asks what each can establish:

  • For the chemical state: look beyond pH to the other carbonate-system measurements and, where relevant, aragonite saturation.
  • For change over time: consider whether observations are repeated at a fixed site or collected during occasional cruises.
  • For geographic context: note whether measurements come from a sampling route, a station, a reef site, or a broader synthesis.
  • For biological meaning: check whether chemistry and organism observations were collected together, and whether conclusions come from experiments, field associations, or models.

No single instrument or data display answers all of these questions. Scientists build the picture by combining measurements with different spatial, temporal, and biological strengths.
