How Scientists Measure Lava Fountains and Estimate Eruption Rates

Lava-fountain height and eruption rate are different measurements. Height describes how far incandescent material rises above a vent, usually in metres. Eruption or effusion rate describes how much lava is produced or transported per unit time, usually in cubic metres per second. Scientists measure fountain height with sight angles, distance and image analysis; they estimate lava output by measuring volume, channel flow or both over a stated time interval.

Height is not the same as lava output

A fountain can become taller without a proportional increase in the lava volume reaching a flow. Gas content, vent geometry, wind and the amount of fragmented material all affect how high the incandescent column rises. Conversely, a low fountain or effusive vent can feed a substantial lava flow.

Quantity What it describes Typical units How scientists obtain it
Fountain height Vertical extent of the dense, continuously visible fountain above its base Metres Two sight angles and a measured distance, or calibrated camera images
Instantaneous effusion rate Lava output at a particular moment m³/s Channel flux, velocity and cross-section, or rapidly repeated volume observations
Time-averaged discharge rate Average output over a selected interval m³/s Volume change divided by the chosen elapsed time
Eruption rate Cumulative erupted volume divided by time since the eruption began m³/s Mapped or otherwise estimated cumulative volume and an explicitly defined start time
Mean output rate Final erupted volume divided by the total eruption duration m³/s Final volume estimate and the complete duration of the event

The distinctions among instantaneous, time-averaged, cumulative and final rates are set out in the review by Sonia Calvari, Jonathan Dehn and A. Harris, “Lava effusion rate definition and measurement: a review” (2007). A published number is meaningful only when its time interval and spatial area are stated.

How field observers measure a lava fountain

The USGS Hawaiian Volcano Observatory procedure is a simple geometric survey, but its accuracy depends on consistent observation points and boundaries. An observer measures the angle from eye level to the top of the fountain, then measures the angle from the same eye level down to the base. The distance from the observer to the fountain is measured separately. A laser rangefinder can return distance and angle together; an inclinometer and compass are other instruments listed by USGS. These tools are for trained monitoring teams, not a reason to approach an active vent.

  1. Choose a stable observation point. Record the location and measure the straight-line distance to the vent or visible fountain column.
  2. Keep the instrument at one eye height. Sight the highest accepted part of the fountain and record the upward angle. Without changing eye height, sight the accepted base and record the downward angle.
  3. Calculate the two vertical segments. For distance d, upward angle θ and downward angle β, the segment above the observer is d × tan(θ); the segment below is d × tan(β). Add them to obtain the fountain height: h = d[tan(θ) + tan(β)]. Angles must be in the units expected by the calculator or surveying instrument.
  4. Document the boundary rule. Note whether the base was a vent, glowing fissure or another visible reference and whether smoke, spatter or topography obscured it.
  5. Repeat from the same geometry. Repeated readings can reveal changes, while moving the observer or changing the sighting rule can create an apparent change that is only a measurement difference.

The top is not the highest isolated glowing particle. USGS defines it as the upper boundary of the optically dense column, where most lava stops rising and falls back. A gas plume can carry sparse particles tens to hundreds of metres above that dense body. Counting those outliers would make measurements inconsistent. The base can be hidden by accumulated lava, spatter or cinder, so observers may use a visible glowing crack or another unobstructed fissure exposure instead.

As Hawaiian Volcano Observatory geologist Carolyn Parcheta explained in the USGS October 28, 2021 Volcano Watch article, “One of the things that field geologists do first is to measure the height of lava fountains and other vent dimensions to help assess how energetic the eruption is.” Height is therefore an early indicator of eruptive behavior, not a substitute for a discharge measurement.

Using cameras when people cannot stand near the vent

Fixed cameras provide a repeatable viewpoint and a time series. Analysts calibrate the image against known distances or surveyed features, identify the dense fountain boundary in each frame, and convert its image position to height. The same definition used in field observations—normally the main continuous body rather than stray particles—must be applied throughout the series.

Kīlauea summit time series

A USGS Volcano Science Center data release published September 22, 2026, for the continuing 2024–2026 Kīlauea summit eruption contains source images and measured heights. Its cameras recorded at 0.5- to 1.0-minute intervals, and staff generally measured the main fountain body about once per minute while excluding sparse particles above the continuous column. The August 2026 version covers episodes 1–50. USGS reported that 54 episodes had occurred by that time; later episodes are to be added in a future version, so the episode count and data coverage are date-specific. The release is available at the USGS data page.

Such a record can show pulses, pauses and gradual changes that a single field reading misses. It still depends on clear viewing geometry, camera stability, calibration and a consistent top-and-base rule. Steam, darkness, changing vent position or a blocked line of sight can make a frame unusable.

Automated analysis of Mauna Loa footage

For the 2022 Mauna Loa summit episode, researchers analyzed approximately seven hours of webcam video and processed more than 87,000 frames. An automated method measured fountain heights, fissure lengths and the volumes of ejecta in flight. The resulting study, “Onset and evolution of summit lava fountaining during the Mauna Loa 2022 eruption,” demonstrates how ordinary monitoring footage can be converted into quantitative early-eruption parameters when the camera is calibrated and the image sequence is long enough.

  • 2.4" IPS Backlit Display - Bright, high-resolution screen with switchable black/white background adapts to lighting conditions for crystal-clear readings in both sunlight and low light.

The result changes with the area and period chosen. A single flow lobe over six hours, the entire active field over a week and the whole eruption from start to finish are different quantities even if they describe the same event.

Measuring thickness on the ground

Field crews can measure exposed flow edges at multiple points, recording the vertical difference between the pre-eruption surface and the top of the lava. Those samples are useful but may miss thickness changes in the interior, where a flow can be much deeper or contain a hollow channel. Averaging a few edge measurements across an entire field can therefore bias the volume.

Airborne and photogrammetric mapping

Airborne radar, lidar and overlapping aerial photographs cover larger areas. With structure-from-motion (SfM), software identifies common features in many photographs to build elevation models. Scientists subtract a pre-eruption elevation model from a post-eruption model; the difference estimates thickness at each mapped location, which can then be integrated into a volume.

USGS described a Kīlauea 2018 drone map made from about 2,800 aerial photographs and roughly 1.5 billion automatically selected common points. The preliminary mapped volume was about 0.8 cubic kilometres. After corrections, USGS reported a minimum rate estimate of approximately 50–200 cubic metres per second for that lower East Rift Zone event. Both numbers are historical, preliminary or minimum estimates with the limitations described in the March 7, 2019 USGS explanation of lava-flow thickness; they are not universal values for Kīlauea or other eruptions.

Measuring lava moving through active channels

Mapping the final deposit tells scientists what accumulated. Channel measurements can estimate what is moving now. A flux estimate combines a channel cross-section with lava velocity, while repeated observations reveal how that flux changes.

  • Downward-looking UAS video: Repeated flights over a channel can track surface motion and geometry while limiting the need for personnel near the flow.
  • Particle image velocimetry (PIV): Stable video records recognizable surface patterns; software follows their displacement to estimate velocity. A calibrated channel width and depth are still needed to convert velocity into flux.
  • Thermal and visual imaging: Temperature patterns, crust movement and visible tracers can help identify active portions of a channel and distinguish moving lava from stagnant crust.
  • Radar and lidar: These instruments can measure surface shape or movement when lighting, smoke or distance makes ordinary photographs unreliable.

USGS lists these approaches in its 2024 Recommended Capabilities and Instrumentation for Volcano Monitoring in the United States and documents UAS response work during the Kīlauea eruption at its Land Imaging Report site. They are specialist monitoring methods. Consumer cameras, drones or rangefinders should not be taken into an active eruption area without the authorities, training, aircraft permissions and safety systems required for that site.

Why every rate has uncertainty

Measurement stage Typical source of error or bias How scientists address it
Fountain height Unclear base, changing vent position, camera perspective or counting airborne particles Use the dense-column definition, fixed viewpoints, calibration and repeated observations
Ground thickness samples Edge measurements may not represent the interior; channels may be hollow Collect many points and combine them with elevation mapping or cross-sections
Topographic differencing Incomplete image coverage, poor ground control or mismatched pre- and post-eruption models Use surveyed control, overlapping coverage and error estimates for both models
Channel flux Surface velocity may differ from depth-averaged velocity; crust can hide moving lava Measure geometry, velocity and thermal state together and compare independent methods
Time conversion A short pulse can be diluted by a long average, or a delayed start time can alter a cumulative rate Publish the exact start, end and averaging interval

The 2007 review by Calvari, Dehn and Harris cautions that “No approach is without its problems, and all can have large error (up to ∼50%).” That figure describes the potential error of individual approaches, not a fixed uncertainty attached to every eruption. Agreement among independent methods, careful calibration and explicit assumptions can support more reliable estimates.

A hollow channel illustrates why a seemingly reasonable calculation can fail: using the full height of its rim as if the channel were filled uniformly with lava overestimates cross-sectional area, volume and rate. Likewise, a camera estimate can be precise to a pixel yet wrong in metres if the viewing geometry or calibration is wrong.

How to compare two published eruption rates fairly

Before deciding that one eruption was faster than another, record all three items below:

  1. Averaging period: Is the number instantaneous, a 10-minute average, a daily average, cumulative since onset or the final mean for the entire eruption?
  2. Spatial scope: Does it describe one channel, one flow unit, a mapped lobe, the whole active field or the complete deposit?
  3. Method and assumptions: Was it derived from channel velocity, camera observations, field thickness, SfM, lidar, radar or a combination? Were hollow channels, missing areas and model errors addressed?

If any of those details is missing, the values may not be directly comparable. A larger number can simply reflect a shorter averaging window or a smaller, more active area.

An illustrative volume-to-rate calculation

Suppose a hypothetical mapped flow covers 2 square kilometres with an average thickness of 5 metres. The estimated volume is 10 million cubic metres. If that volume accumulated over 10 days, the average is about 11.6 cubic metres per second, because 10 days equals 864,000 seconds. This is an illustration of the calculation, not a measurement of a particular volcano. Real studies must show how area and thickness were measured, how representative the average is, and which start and end times were used.

What the measurements let scientists infer

Fountain height provides a rapid, repeatable indicator of eruptive energy and can reveal changes from minute to minute when cameras are available. Volume and channel measurements answer a different operational question: how much lava is leaving the vent and where it may travel. Combining the two helps observatories distinguish a gas-rich burst from a sustained increase in lava supply, estimate hazards to downslope communities and improve models of how an eruption evolves.

The most defensible report therefore pairs a number with its definition: for example, “a camera-derived dense-column height measured every minute,” or “a corrected minimum whole-field rate averaged over the mapped interval.” Without that context, a precise-looking figure can be scientifically misleading.
