Scientists identify why a whale, dolphin, seal or other marine mammal died by combining a documented stranding response, a physical examination or necropsy, targeted tissue sampling and laboratory tests. They compare those results with the animal’s condition, location and circumstances. The evidence may point to disease, toxins, trauma, human interaction, malnutrition, pollution or several factors together—but decomposition, unsafe conditions and limited access often mean the final cause remains undetermined.
What a marine-mammal death investigation can—and cannot—establish
A stranding is an animal found ashore or floating, alive or dead. Finding a carcass does not by itself show what killed it. Investigators need evidence that connects a possible cause to injuries, organ changes, laboratory findings and the circumstances of the case.

NOAA Fisheries coordinates the U.S. Marine Mammal Health and Stranding Response Program. Its National Marine Mammal Stranding Response Network includes government agencies, universities, aquariums, zoos, veterinary clinics and nonprofit organizations. NOAA’s current program pages describe more than 120 partner organizations, a figure presented as a current page count rather than a dated study statistic.
Only trained and authorized responders should approach or handle a stranded animal. Marine mammals are powerful, unpredictable wildlife and can carry infections transmissible to people. A professional response protects the public, the animal and the evidence.

How an investigation proceeds
1. A report triggers a safe, feasible response
Responders receive information about a dead animal from the public, authorities or other network partners. NOAA says the decision to respond depends on safety and feasibility. A carcass may be in surf, on private property, under a bridge, on a remote beach or in a place where heavy equipment cannot reach it. Those conditions determine what can be examined and whether samples can be recovered.
A responder records the number of animals, species when known, whether each is alive or dead, the date and time, and the location. These basic observations help distinguish an isolated death from a wider event.
2. The case is documented with Level A information
The standard Level A record captures core facts such as species, place and time of stranding, physical condition, age and sex when available, and the outcome. It can also indicate whether a necropsy occurred and whether samples were collected.

Level A data are not a laboratory report. The form does not contain the results of diagnostic analyses. Microscopy, pathogen tests, toxicology and other findings are recorded through the subsequent diagnostic and case-review process.
3. Investigators assess the carcass and choose an examination scope
A necropsy is an animal autopsy. NOAA Fisheries defines it as “the examination of the dead body or carcass of an animal, similar to an autopsy conducted on humans.” The examination may take place on a beach, at sea or in a facility.

Scope varies with carcass size and condition, access, available staff and equipment, weather, transport and public-safety concerns. A large whale may be examined where it lies. A smaller animal may be moved to a laboratory for a more complete examination. NOAA does not require a necropsy in every case: a response can be unsafe, impossible or unlikely to produce useful evidence.
Decomposition is a central limitation. As tissues break down, natural post-mortem changes can resemble disease, hide injuries, destroy recognizable organs and alter chemical measurements. A fresh carcass usually offers more diagnostic options than one that has been exposed for days in warm water or on a beach.

Responders photograph and describe the body, external injuries, body condition, parasites, openings and visible abnormalities. They then examine organs and tissues to document lesions and collect samples suited to the questions raised by the case.
Sampling is selective rather than automatic. Investigators may preserve tissues for histopathology, retain material for microbiology or genetic testing, and collect specimens for toxin or contaminant analysis. The species, suspected exposure, decomposition stage and available laboratory capacity influence which samples are useful.
5. Diagnostic laboratories test different kinds of evidence
Field observations often suggest a cause but require laboratory confirmation. No single test can identify every cause of death; each method answers a different question.

| Method | What it can reveal | Important limits |
|---|---|---|
| Gross examination and organ documentation | Visible trauma, abnormal organs, body condition, parasites and signs of entanglement or ingestion | Findings can be obscured by decomposition and may not identify the original cause without testing |
| Histopathology | Microscopic tissue changes consistent with inflammation, infection, cancer, toxin injury or other disease processes | Requires suitable, well-preserved tissue and expert interpretation |
| Microbiology and pathogen testing | Bacteria, fungi, viruses or other infectious agents, using culture, molecular or related tests | Detecting an organism does not always prove it caused death; contamination and background infections must be considered |
| Genetic testing | Evidence of particular pathogens or biological identity questions supported by molecular assays | Results depend on the assay, sample quality and the question being asked |
| Toxicology and contaminant analysis | Biotoxins, pollutants or other chemicals present in collected tissues or body fluids | A detected chemical must be interpreted against dose, tissue distribution, timing and other injuries |
| Radiology, including CT and MRI | Internal fractures, foreign objects, gas patterns and other structures that may not be visible from the outside | Large carcasses and remote strandings can make imaging impractical |
| Gas analysis | Occasional examination of gases associated with decomposition or particular injury patterns | Used only in some investigations and highly dependent on collection conditions |
NOAA’s Southwest Fisheries Science Center describes using CT and MRI, histopathology, microbiology and, occasionally, gas analysis in its investigations. The presence or absence of any one method does not by itself indicate the quality of a case; investigators adapt the work to the animal and circumstances.

The final assessment combines lesions, test results, body condition, location, weather or ocean conditions, witness information and signs of human interaction. A report may identify a likely primary cause, list contributing factors or conclude that the cause is undetermined.
“Cause of death” and “factors associated with death” are not always the same. For example, severe malnutrition may weaken an animal, an infection may follow, and a storm may then strand it. Investigators must decide which findings are causal, which are contributing and which are incidental.
Causes investigators consider
Marine mammal deaths can result from natural disease, environmental exposure or human activity. The main categories overlap, and more than one can operate in the same case.
| Possible cause | Evidence investigators may seek |
|---|---|
| Infectious disease | Lesions, inflammation, parasites, bacteria, fungi, viruses or pathogen material in appropriate tissues |
| Non-infectious disease | Cancer, organ failure, congenital problems or other disease changes found during examination and microscopy |
| Harmful algal blooms and biotoxins | Exposure patterns, compatible neurological or organ injury and toxin measurements such as domoic acid where testing is appropriate |
| Vessel collision | Blunt-force injuries, fractures, internal bleeding or propeller wounds, interpreted with the carcass location and reports of vessel activity |
| Fishing-gear or marine-debris entanglement | Rope or net impressions, embedded gear, wounds, restricted movement and associated trauma |
| Ingestion of debris | Foreign material in the mouth, stomach or intestines and damage caused by blockage, perforation or starvation |
| Gunshots and other human interactions | Projectiles, entry wounds, tissue damage, cutting or handling injuries and reliable case circumstances |
| Malnutrition | Low body reserves, reduced fat stores, muscle loss and evidence of prolonged inadequate feeding |
| Pollution exposure | Measured contaminants, tissue changes and an exposure pattern consistent with harm |
| Separation of a young animal from its mother | Age, body condition, absence of maternal association and circumstances indicating loss of nursing or care |
| Weather and oceanographic conditions | Regional conditions associated with strandings, considered as context rather than automatic proof of a lethal mechanism |
A regional pattern must be kept in context. NOAA’s Southwest Fisheries Science Center says necropsies most commonly identify trauma, infectious disease and domoic acid toxicosis among stranded cetaceans in San Diego County. That observation is geographically limited and supplies no percentages or counts; it should not be treated as a universal ranking for every species or coastline.

Why two apparently similar carcasses can produce different answers
The quality and meaning of a result depend on more than the test name. Investigators compare cases across five practical dimensions.
| Comparison factor | Why it changes the conclusion |
|---|---|
| Carcass condition | Fresh tissue preserves lesions and chemical evidence; advanced decomposition can erase or mimic them. |
| Access and safety | A reachable carcass may receive a fuller examination than one in surf, on a cliff or in an area unsafe for responders. |
| Examination scope | A field assessment, partial necropsy and complete facility examination yield different amounts of information. |
| Samples and laboratory methods | Without suitable tissue, some tests cannot be performed; available laboratories and case priorities determine follow-up. |
| Question being asked | An individual diagnosis requires a different analysis from a population investigation seeking a shared exposure or trend. |
These constraints explain why a definitive answer is not guaranteed. “Undetermined” can be the scientifically correct conclusion when evidence is absent, contradictory or no longer recoverable.
When many animals die: Unusual Mortality Events
A high number of deaths in one region over a short period may qualify as an Unusual Mortality Event (UME). NOAA’s program coordinates a working group that leads investigation of potential causes under a statutory framework for coordinated response and tissue analysis.
UME work extends beyond one necropsy. Teams compare species, ages, locations, timing, clinical signs and laboratory findings. Baseline biosurveillance and long-term tissue storage let researchers compare current samples with earlier health patterns and detect changes that a single carcass cannot show.
A UME designation signals an organized population-level investigation; it does not automatically identify the cause. The cause still has to be supported by converging evidence from field observations, necropsies, laboratory analyses and environmental context.

How the public should report a carcass
Do not touch, move, feed or attempt to return a marine mammal to the water. Keep children, pets and other people away, and follow local instructions about beaches, boats and protected areas.
When it is safe and legal, report:
- the date and time;
- the exact or nearest location;
- the number of animals;
- whether each animal is alive or dead; and
- the species, if you can identify it without approaching.
Photos from several angles can help responders assess species, size, visible injuries and gear. Take them from a safe, lawful distance; never enter the water or handle the animal to obtain a better image. Contact the appropriate NOAA or local stranding-response authority rather than trying to conduct an examination yourself.
How records and stored tissues improve future answers
One case may not resolve a mystery, but standardized records make cases comparable. Level A information supplies consistent basics about when, where and how an animal was found, while separate diagnostic records preserve laboratory interpretations. Samples retained under established procedures can later be reanalyzed with improved tests or compared with tissues from other years and regions.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →This long-term view supports biosurveillance: researchers can identify recurring pathogens, toxin exposure, contaminant patterns or changes in body condition before they become obvious from individual strandings. It also helps distinguish a genuine population event from a cluster created by reporting or weather.
The practical bottom line for interpreting a cause-of-death report
Read the conclusion together with its evidence and limitations. Ask whether the carcass was fresh enough for testing, what parts of the body were examined, which samples were available, whether laboratory confirmation was obtained and whether the finding describes a primary cause or a contributing factor. A careful report may be less certain than a headline, but that uncertainty reflects the biological and logistical limits of investigating a dead wild animal.
