How Scientists Estimate the Age of a Moon Crater

Scientists usually cannot give an individual Moon crater an exact age from crater counting alone. They estimate the age of the surface around it by counting craters, comparing that pattern with a calibrated chronology, and checking geological relationships. Laboratory dates from lunar rocks help calibrate the method, but a dated rock constrains a particular crater only when its connection to that impact is well supported.

What scientists mean by a crater’s “age”

Three different kinds of age are involved, and they answer different questions:

  • Relative age tells whether one crater, deposit, or terrain formed before or after another. It usually establishes an order, not a date in years.
  • Surface model age estimates when a mapped stretch of terrain formed, using its crater population and a calibrated model. It is not automatically the formation date of every crater on that terrain.
  • Radiometric age is a laboratory estimate of a sampled rock’s history, such as when it crystallized or was reset by an event. It dates the sample; connecting that date to a crater requires evidence linking the sample to the impact.

Keeping these distinctions clear prevents a common misunderstanding: a crater-count age is not a direct timestamp for an individual impact.

How crater counting estimates a surface age

  1. Define a geological unit. Researchers select a coherent surface, such as a lava plain or an older highland terrain. Its boundaries matter: combining ground formed at different times can distort the count.
  2. Count craters by size. They identify craters across the chosen area, often sorting them into diameter ranges. In general, a surface exposed for longer has accumulated more impacts. NASA describes this approach as crater counting: NASA’s overview of lunar craters.
  3. Compare the size-frequency pattern with a chronology. Scientists compare the number and sizes of craters with a calibrated curve or model that relates crater populations to elapsed time. The result is a model age for the mapped surface, not a direct date for each crater. See NASA’s discussion of Artemis II lunar science and its lunar geochronology report.
  4. Check geological context. Researchers examine what covers or overlaps what. A lava flow that buries a crater is younger than that crater; a crater superposed on a surface formed after that surface. This helps establish relative order and assess whether the counted terrain has been resurfaced.

The logic is useful, but not a simple “more craters always means older” rule. New lava or deposits can cover old craters, while impacts can add fresh ones; counting choices and model calibration also affect the estimate.

How returned samples calibrate the crater clock

Apollo and Luna missions returned rocks that can be dated radiometrically in laboratories. When scientists can tie a sample to a geological unit whose crater population is known, the sample’s radiometric age anchors the relationship between crater counts and time. That calibration lets researchers estimate ages for other surfaces where no sample is available. NASA notes that crater-count ages are approximations and that the returned sample record does not represent every lunar region: NASA’s Artemis II lunar science discussion.

Sample provenance is crucial. A rock may provide a useful age for an impact only if its origin and relationship to that impact are defensible. Otherwise, its laboratory date is evidence about the rock, not necessarily the crater a reader wants to date.

Tycho: a useful example of an inferred link

NASA reports that impact-melt glass associated with Apollo 17 samples has a radiometric age of 108 million years. The glass is thought to have been thrown from the Tycho crater to the Apollo 17 landing region. This supports Tycho’s age estimate through transported ejecta; the dated material was not collected at Tycho itself. NASA uses the example to show how sample ages help calibrate crater-count ages: NASA’s Tycho resource.

What other clues can—and cannot—tell us

Evidence What it indicates Key limitation
Crater size-frequency counting Relative age or calibrated model age of a mapped surface Depends on the chosen unit, crater identification and size range, and chronology model. NASA geochronology report
Radiometric dating Isotopic age of a sampled rock or impact melt Requires a sample and a defensible connection to the event being dated. NASA Tycho resource
Stratigraphic relationships Which feature or deposit is older or younger Usually establishes sequence, not an age in years. NASA lunar science discussion
Crater shape and ejecta preservation Whether a crater appears relatively fresh or degraded Useful for relative-age clues, but not necessarily a precise date. NASA’s Giordano Bruno feature page

For example, NASA describes Giordano Bruno as apparently young based on its features while noting that its exact age is unknown. Fresh appearance can support a relative classification without settling a precise age in years: NASA’s Giordano Bruno page.

Why crater-age estimates can change

  • Surface boundaries and resurfacing: a count is meaningful only for a defined geological unit. Later flows or deposits can hide older craters, changing the visible population.
  • Counting and image choices: diameter thresholds, image resolution, crater degradation, and the treatment of secondary craters can affect which features are counted.
  • Chronology calibration: different models or assumptions can produce materially different estimates. NASA’s geochronology report describes a factor-of-2–3 difference in crater-density results for the North Ray area and an example in which a surface previously assigned a 3-billion-year model age could be revised to 1.9 billion years under another chronology. These are examples of model dependence, not universal error bars for all craters. NASA geochronology report
  • Geographic gaps in samples: Apollo and Luna samples anchor important units but do not represent the far side, the south pole, or every ancient terrain. Additional samples from underrepresented areas could improve lunar chronology calibration. NASA lunar science priorities

One study reported that large lunar craters formed at two to three times the rate during approximately the last 290 million years as during the preceding 700 million years. That is a finding about crater production over those intervals, not a way to assign an age to a particular crater: NASA’s report on lunar crater production.

What a responsible age statement looks like

When you see a Moon crater described as “about” a certain age, check what the number actually refers to. It may be the model age of a surrounding surface, the radiometric age of a sample associated with ejecta, or a relative classification based on geological features. The strongest claims explain the link between the evidence and the impact; where that link is uncertain, the age should be presented as an estimate rather than an exact date.
