Scientists usually do not date a footprint impression itself. They date the sedimentary layer that contains it, or suitable material in layers above, below or alongside it, then combine relative stratigraphy with one or more numerical methods. The result is an age estimate for the track-making event, bounded by the relationship between each dated sample and the track-bearing layer.
This distinction matters because a trackway is a trace fossil: it records an animal’s activity, not preserved bone or tissue. Its age is therefore reconstructed from geological context, material-specific dating and independent checks.

What a fossil trackway is
The National Park Service uses “trace fossil” for preserved evidence of an organism’s activity, including footprints, tracks, trails and burrows. The Natural History Museum in London defines a trackway as a sequence of consecutive footfalls made by the same animal. A trackway can reveal direction, pace, group movement and interactions even when no body fossil is present.
Geologists also record the geologic context: the rock or sediment deposit in which the trace occurs. That context is the starting point for dating. A footprint may be an impression in the original surface, a transmitted undertrack formed below that surface, or a natural cast created when later sediment filled the impression and hardened. Researchers must identify which type they are studying before interpreting its relationship to dated material.

Why the footprint is rarely dated directly
Dating techniques work on particular materials and geological events. A radiometric measurement may date the crystallization of a mineral, the eruption of volcanic ash or the burial of sediment. Radiocarbon measures suitable once-living material. Optically stimulated luminescence (OSL) measures the time since quartz grains were last exposed to sunlight. None of those measurements automatically dates the surface impression made by an animal.
Instead, scientists ask whether a sample formed before, during or after the track was made. A layer beneath the trackway generally predates it; a layer that buried the tracks generally postdates it. The strength of the age estimate depends on how securely that sequence is established and whether the dated material has remained in place.
The dating workflow, step by step
1. Document the track-bearing layer
Field teams map every track and describe the sediment around it: grain size, bedding, color, water-laid or wind-laid deposits, volcanic components and signs of disturbance. They record whether the tracks lie on an exposed surface, inside a buried horizon or in a cast. This work reconstructs the landscape at the moment of track formation and identifies layers that could provide dates.
Preservation itself supplies geological clues. Ground that is very hard may not retain enough detail for a clear print. Ground that is excessively soft can collapse under a foot and distort its shape. A surface with the right moisture and firmness can preserve a sharp impression, while rapid burial by mud, ash or another sediment can protect it from erosion. These conditions determine what evidence survives; they do not by themselves provide a numerical age.

2. Build a relative chronology
Relative dating places events in order rather than assigning a number of years. In an undisturbed sedimentary sequence, lower beds are normally older than beds above them. If a track surface is demonstrably between two dated or recognizable horizons, the tracks can be placed within that interval.
Researchers correlate layers between outcrops using matching rock characteristics and, where appropriate, index fossils. An index fossil is useful when its species had a limited, well-known time range and occurs widely enough to link separate sites. Correlation can show that two track-bearing layers are approximately contemporaneous, but it remains a relative framework until a suitable numerical date is attached.
3. Find material that can receive a numerical date
Numerical, or absolute, dating reports an age in years for a specified material or event. The team first inventories what is actually present:
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems- Volcanic ash or tuff: minerals in an ash layer may be datable, and the ash horizon can bracket nearby tracks.
- Other datable minerals or rocks: radiometric methods apply only when the mineral system and geological history are appropriate.
- Once-living material: radiocarbon can be used on suitable organic remains, such as plant material, when contamination and environmental effects are addressed.
- Quartz grains: OSL estimates the time since grains were last exposed to sunlight, commonly the moment of burial if the grains were adequately reset.
The measured object must be named in the report. “The trackway is 20,000 years old” is shorthand; the full statement should identify the sample, the dated event and its position relative to the footprints.

4. State whether the result brackets or dates the track event
A date from an underlying bed usually tells researchers that the tracks formed later than that bed. A date from an overlying burial layer usually tells them that the tracks formed earlier than the burial event. If both relationships are secure, the two dates create a bracket. A sample incorporated into the same surface may provide a closer estimate, but only if scientists can show that it was deposited at the time of track formation rather than moved there later.
5. Cross-check independent evidence
Researchers compare dates from different materials or methods and test whether they fit the stratigraphy. Agreement does not eliminate every source of uncertainty, but it makes an explanation that depends on one unusual sample less likely. Disagreement prompts checks for reworking, contamination, incomplete sunlight exposure, old carbon or a mistaken layer correlation.
How the principal methods differ
| Approach | Material examined | What it dates | Type of result | Main qualification |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Stratigraphic position | Layers and their contacts | Order of deposition and erosion events | Relative sequence | Assumes the section has not been overturned or substantially disturbed. |
| Index-fossil correlation | Fossils with known, limited ranges | Approximate equivalence of layers | Relative correlation | Requires a reliable fossil range and matching depositional context. |
| Radiometric dating | Suitable minerals or rocks | A crystallization, eruption or other system-specific event | Numerical age | The dated event may predate or postdate the track-making event. |
| Volcanic ash or tuff dating | Minerals within an ash horizon | The eruption or deposition of that horizon | Numerical bracket for nearby beds | Tracks must be demonstrably above, below or within the ash relationship being used. |
| Radiocarbon | Suitable once-living material | Carbon exchange and death of the dated organism, within the method’s applicable range | Numerical age | It dates the organic sample, not automatically the footprint; old-carbon and contamination issues must be considered. |
| Optically stimulated luminescence | Quartz and certain other mineral grains | Time since the grains were last exposed to sunlight | Numerical burial-time estimate or constraint | Incomplete light exposure before burial or later disturbance can affect the relationship to the tracks. |
There is no universal error range for fossil trackways. Precision depends on the material, laboratory protocol, stratigraphic relationship and site history reported in a particular study.
What preservation can—and cannot—tell scientists
A well-preserved print indicates that the substrate and burial conditions were favorable, not that the track is easier to date. A natural cast may have formed long after the original impression if sediment filled it during a later event. An undertrack may record pressure transmitted through several sediment layers, so its apparent position must be tied carefully to the original walking surface. Multiple surfaces in one exposure can also represent separate visits separated by unknown intervals.

Scientists therefore distinguish the age of the walking event from the age of later preservation stages. The track was made when the animal stepped on the surface; it was preserved when the impression was buried and protected; and it may have been exposed again much later by erosion. A dated ash bed or buried soil can constrain one of those events without directly dating all of them.

Human footprints at White Sands National Park illustrate how the relationship between sample and track layer is tested. In a report dated October 5, 2023, the U.S. Geological Survey said two additional approaches supported its earlier estimate of 21,000–23,000 years for the footprints.
Why the first sample raised a question
Earlier work used seeds of the aquatic plant Ruppia cirrhosa found in the impressions. Aquatic plants can obtain carbon from dissolved carbon in water, so their radiocarbon ages could, in some settings, appear artificially old. That possibility did not prove the original dates wrong, but it created a specific test: use a terrestrial sample from the same layers and see whether it agrees.

Terrestrial pollen as an independent check
The team isolated terrestrial conifer pollen from the footprint-bearing layers. Each dated sample contained approximately 75,000 pollen grains, according to the USGS report. The pollen ages were statistically identical to the corresponding seed ages, reducing the concern that the aquatic plant’s carbon source had shifted the result.

Quartz luminescence supplied a different clock
The researchers also applied OSL to quartz from the footprint-bearing layers. Because OSL dates the last exposure of the grains to sunlight, it addressed the timing of sediment burial rather than the carbon history of a plant. The result indicated a minimum age of about 21,500 years for the layers containing the footprints.
Radiocarbon evidence from seeds and terrestrial pollen, combined with the quartz-luminescence minimum, supported the 21,000–23,000-year estimate. The case does not establish a universal precision for trackways; it shows how a site-specific age becomes more persuasive when independent materials and physical processes converge.
How scientists express uncertainty
A responsible report identifies four things together: the numerical value or range, the material measured, the event that material records and the geological relationship to the tracks. For example, “quartz from the footprint-bearing layer gave a minimum age of about 21,500 years” is more informative than simply calling the footprints 21,500 years old.
Recommended Free Tools
Scientists also separate analytical uncertainty from geological uncertainty. A laboratory may measure a sample precisely while the sample’s relationship to the track surface remains ambiguous. Conversely, a broad but secure bracket may be more useful than a very precise date from material that could have been transported. Published ages should therefore be read as constraints on a track-making event, not as an intrinsic timestamp embedded in the footprint.
A practical checklist for reading a trackway age claim
- What exactly was measured? Look for a mineral, ash bed, seed, pollen sample or quartz grain—not merely “the footprint.”
- Where was it in the sequence? Check whether it was beneath, above, within or beside the track-bearing layer.
- Which event does the method date? Crystallization, eruption, plant death, burial or last sunlight exposure can all produce different ages.
- Is the result relative, numerical, a minimum or a bracket? A stratigraphic order is not a number, and a minimum age is not an exact age.
- Could the sample have moved or exchanged material? Reworking, contamination, old carbon and incomplete light exposure are site-specific concerns.
- Were independent checks used? Agreement among stratigraphy, organic samples, minerals and luminescence is stronger than reliance on one line of evidence.
- What uncertainty does the study actually report? Do not substitute a generic error margin for the study’s own qualifications.
The central idea
Estimating a fossil trackway’s age is an exercise in geological relationships. Researchers first establish how the track surface formed and was buried, then order the surrounding layers, date suitable materials and test whether independent clocks agree. The final age belongs to the track-making event only insofar as those dated materials demonstrably bracket or coincide with it. That careful chain—from footprint, to layer, to sample, to dated event—is why different trackways require different methods and why a good age claim explains more than a number.
