Neutrino observatories do not photograph neutrinos. They record the Cherenkov light made by charged particles produced when a neutrino interacts in or near the detector. Scientists reconstruct that event’s energy, direction, shape and starting point, then compare the result with models of astrophysical signals and terrestrial backgrounds.
No single feature proves that one event came from space. A cosmic contribution is established by combining several imperfect clues—especially energy, direction, topology, containment and veto information—and testing whether the observed population exceeds what atmospheric processes can explain.

What the detector actually measures
IceCube’s detector is a cubic-kilometre array of digital optical modules (DOMs) embedded in Antarctic ice. A neutrino interaction creates charged secondary particles. As those particles move faster than light travels through the ice, they emit a cone of blue Cherenkov light. DOMs record the arrival times and brightness of that light; the neutrino itself remains invisible.
From the pattern of hit modules, reconstruction software estimates the interaction vertex, particle path, deposited energy and incoming direction. The same pattern can provide clues about flavor. A muon-neutrino interaction often produces a long-lived muon track. An electron-neutrino interaction usually produces a compact electromagnetic or hadronic cascade. A tau-neutrino interaction can produce two separated showers, called a double cascade or “double-bang,” when the tau travels far enough for both vertices to be resolved. These signatures are tendencies, not infallible labels: light scattering, detector geometry and incomplete energy deposition affect every reconstruction. IceCube’s detector overview explains the light-based measurement in detail.

The result is therefore an event hypothesis rather than a direct image. Analysts attach uncertainties to direction, energy, topology and vertex position, and carry those uncertainties into the later signal-versus-background calculation.
The backgrounds a cosmic-neutrino search must defeat
Atmospheric muons
Cosmic rays strike molecules in Earth’s atmosphere and create particle showers containing enormous numbers of muons. Down-going atmospheric muons enter the detector from above. A single energetic muon can look much like the muon track produced by a neutrino interaction, while a bundle of lower-energy muons can imitate an unusually bright event.
IceCube’s educational material gives the scale as roughly one million detected atmospheric muons for every neutrino seen by IceCube. That figure is a memorable order-of-magnitude comparison from the masterclass, not a universal event rate or the purity of a modern analysis after cuts. The source’s wording and context matter.

The same air showers also produce neutrinos. These atmospheric neutrinos are genuine neutrinos, not electronic noise, but they are a physical background when the goal is to find neutrinos made in distant stars, galaxies or other cosmic accelerators. Because neutrinos can cross the planet, an atmospheric neutrino can arrive from below and survive the Earth filtering that removes most down-going muons.
Atmospheric neutrinos are generally more abundant at lower energies. Their spectrum, flavor mix and angular distribution are modeled from cosmic-ray and hadronic-interaction calculations, then compared with detector data. The models are not exact, so analyses include uncertainties in flux, cross sections, ice optical properties and detector response. The IceCube Masterclass analysis guide describes the atmospheric-versus-extraterrestrial distinction.

The combined tests used to identify a cosmic contribution
1. Energy changes the odds
At a few teraelectronvolts and below, an observed event is more likely to be atmospheric on average. Above several teraelectronvolts, the chance of an astrophysical origin rises because the atmospheric spectrum falls more steeply. This is a rule of thumb from the IceCube Masterclass, not a universal pass/fail threshold. An atmospheric neutrino can still be very energetic, and an astrophysical neutrino can have a reconstructed energy near the lower end of a search.
Real analyses use the detector’s energy response and a continuous probability model. They compare the measured energy distribution with an atmospheric-only hypothesis and with alternatives that include an astrophysical spectrum. A high-energy event receives more weight toward the cosmic hypothesis, but its final probability also depends on direction, topology, veto information and the assumed source spectrum.

2. Direction and the Earth as a filter
For a northern-sky track search, a neutrino arriving from below has crossed Earth before reaching IceCube. Atmospheric muons cannot pass through the planet, so selecting up-going tracks removes the dominant down-going muon population. This geometric filter is one of the central reasons long muon tracks are powerful for point-source searches.
Earth absorption becomes relevant at the highest energies: the planet is not perfectly transparent to neutrinos. Consequently, the expected directional distribution is energy-dependent, and an analysis must model both the loss of neutrinos through Earth and the changing atmospheric background.
In a 2015 independent northern-sky analysis, IceCube examined more than 35,000 neutrinos from May 2010 through May 2012. Above 100 TeV, the measured rate could not be explained by atmospheric neutrinos, and the collaboration reported a 3.7-sigma significance for an astrophysical-neutrino observation. That result belongs to that dated data set and selection; it is not a universal significance threshold for declaring every candidate cosmic. IceCube’s 2015 account gives the analysis scope and result.

3. Containment and outer-detector vetoes
For events arriving from the southern sky, the Earth cannot block the atmospheric muons coming from above. Analysts instead search for a neutrino interaction that starts inside the instrumented volume. If the outer DOMs register light before the bright interior event, that early signal indicates an entering muon and the event can be rejected.
This “starting-event” strategy converts the detector’s outer layers into an active veto. It is especially useful for high-energy cascades, which have poor enough direction resolution that an up-going requirement would discard useful information. The veto is probabilistic: gaps in the light pattern, coincident particles and detector noise can leave residual contamination, so the surviving sample is still modeled statistically.
IceCube’s southern-sky work describes the additional challenges of contained selections and the techniques used to reduce entering-muon backgrounds. The 2019 discussion provides that context.
4. Light pattern, topology and event quality
Timing and brightness reveal whether the light is consistent with one well-reconstructed muon, a bundle of atmospheric muons or a localized shower. Reconstruction quality variables test whether the fitted direction and vertex agree with the individual DOM hits. Multivariate selections can combine these variables with an energy proxy, topology, zenith angle and veto activity.
Each cut trades efficiency for background rejection. A severe veto may remove atmospheric contamination but also reject a genuine cosmic event whose light happened to reach an outer sensor. For that reason, analysts publish the selection definition and estimate its efficiency using detector simulations and calibration data rather than treating a cut as a physical law.

5. The atmospheric-neutrino self-veto
An atmospheric neutrino is often born in the same air shower as one or more muons. If those accompanying muons reach the detector, their light can identify the shower as atmospheric and veto the neutrino candidate. This self-veto is most useful for appropriate down-going selections, where the associated muon has a chance to reach the array. It does not eliminate atmospheric neutrinos produced without a detectable companion or those arriving through Earth.
Tracks and cascades answer different scientific questions
Topology determines which information an event supplies. A cleaner, more localized sample is not automatically the sample with the sharpest pointing. The principal trade-offs are:
| Feature | Muon tracks | Cascades |
|---|---|---|
| Angular resolution | Generally sharper because the long path supplies many timing points; valuable for pointing toward a source. | Usually broader because the light comes from a compact shower, although detector and reconstruction improvements can narrow the uncertainty. |
| Energy reconstruction | The exiting muon may carry energy out of the instrument, so the measured light is often a lower bound or proxy for the original neutrino energy. | A large fraction of the neutrino energy is deposited near the vertex, supporting a more direct energy estimate. |
| Atmospheric background | Track-like atmospheric muons are a major contamination risk, requiring Earth filtering, vetoes and quality cuts. | Atmospheric-muon backgrounds can be reduced with containment; atmospheric-neutrino backgrounds remain and are comparatively more uniform across the sky. |
| Flavor sensitivity | Most naturally associated with charged-current muon-neutrino interactions, though other interactions can contribute. | Commonly produced by electron-neutrino interactions and some tau-neutrino interactions; a resolvable tau double cascade can provide distinctive evidence. |
| Source localization | Best suited to testing directional correlations and potential point sources. | Broad error regions make individual-source association harder, but the sample is valuable for measuring an all-sky astrophysical flux. |
These are statistical tendencies, not event-by-event guarantees. A track can be poorly reconstructed, and a cascade can occasionally be well localized. IceCube’s discussion of cascade events explains why compact showers remain scientifically important despite their wider directional uncertainty. See the cascade analysis overview.
Why northern- and southern-sky analyses use different tactics
| Analysis region | Main protection against atmospheric muons | What remains difficult | Typical strength |
|---|---|---|---|
| Northern sky | Require up-going events that have crossed Earth; the planet blocks atmospheric muons. | Atmospheric neutrinos also cross Earth, and Earth absorption affects the highest-energy neutrinos. | Long tracks can provide strong angular resolution for source searches. |
| Southern sky | Require a contained interaction and use early light in the outer detector as a veto; add event-quality and self-veto selections. | Down-going atmospheric muons are abundant, and atmospheric-neutrino contamination remains. | Starting-event samples retain access to the southern sky and can include high-energy cascades. |
The distinction is methodological, not a division between two kinds of neutrino. The same astrophysical flux can be studied in both hemispheres, but detector geometry changes which backgrounds dominate and which events can be retained.

1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesHow an individual alert receives an astrophysical probability
For a transient or real-time alert, the reported astrophysical probability—often written as pastro—comes from simulations and expected signal and background rates. The calculation uses reconstructed energy, direction and event classification, together with an assumed astrophysical spectrum. It asks how likely the observed event would be under signal and background populations; it does not read the event’s origin directly.
Best Value
IceCube alert streams such as Gold and Bronze are selection categories with different expected sample purities. A Gold label means the selection is expected to contain a higher fraction of astrophysical events than a Bronze selection, but neither label guarantees that a particular event is cosmic. The NASA General Coordinates Network’s IceCube mission page documents the alert context.
Alert probabilities can change as calibrations, detector models or population assumptions improve. They also do not establish a unique source: a broad cascade error region may overlap many astronomical objects, and even a well-pointed track can be a chance alignment.
How a population claim is established
To claim an astrophysical flux, scientists examine many events rather than relying on a single spectacular candidate. They define the selection, estimate atmospheric-muon and atmospheric-neutrino contributions, propagate detector and flux uncertainties, and fit the observed energy and directional distributions. The central question is whether an atmospheric-only model can plausibly produce the data.

Significance is expressed in standard deviations, or sigma, under a specified statistical test. The 3.7-sigma value from the 2015 northern-sky analysis quantified that particular excess under that analysis framework. It did not mean that every event in the sample had a 3.7-sigma individual identification, nor that 3.7 sigma is a universal discovery rule for neutrino astronomy.
Source searches add another test: do events cluster near a candidate object more often than expected from the background? A diffuse flux can be real even when no single source reaches statistical significance. The 2015 report specifically noted that its studies had not found a significant number of events from any one source.
A simplified event-discrimination workflow
- Calibrate the light. Convert DOM hit times and charges into a cleaned event record, accounting for ice scattering, sensor response and known noise.
- Reconstruct alternatives. Fit track, cascade and vertex hypotheses, producing direction, energy proxy, topology and uncertainty estimates rather than one unquestioned answer.
- Check containment and veto activity. Look for early outer-detector light or an interaction vertex outside the fiducial volume; reject candidates inconsistent with a neutrino starting inside the detector.
- Apply directional logic. For a northern track sample, require an up-going geometry and model Earth transmission. For a southern starting-event sample, rely more heavily on containment and veto performance.
- Compare with atmospheric models. Evaluate the expected atmospheric-muon and atmospheric-neutrino rates at the reconstructed energy, direction and topology. Include the self-veto where the event geometry permits it.
- Assign a population or alert probability. Combine the likelihoods under signal-plus-background and background-only hypotheses, report the assumptions, and communicate the result as a probability or significance—not as a certainty about the event’s birthplace.
Common misunderstandings and how to avoid them
- “High energy means cosmic.” High energy increases the odds, but atmospheric neutrinos extend to high energies and detector response is uncertain. Use the full likelihood, not a hard energy slogan.
- “Atmospheric neutrinos are noise.” They are real particles created in air showers. Their origin is terrestrial, but their interactions are indistinguishable in principle from interactions of cosmic neutrinos, so their expected population must be modeled.
- “A track proves a source.” A track improves pointing; it does not prove astrophysical origin. Atmospheric muons and atmospheric neutrinos can both produce track-like events.
- “A Gold alert is confirmed.” Gold and Bronze describe expected sample purity. They are not guarantees for individual events.
- “One event identifies one object.” Directional uncertainty, chance alignments and diffuse emission mean a candidate may support a population claim without naming a unique source.
- “The Earth blocks every background.” Earth filtering removes atmospheric muons, not atmospheric neutrinos, and the planet becomes partially opaque to the most energetic neutrinos.
What counts as convincing evidence
The strongest case is cumulative: a well-reconstructed event with a high-energy proxy, a topology and direction suited to the analysis, no veto signature, and a likelihood that is difficult to obtain from modeled atmospheric populations. Confidence grows further when many events produce a statistically significant excess or a directional and temporal association that survives trials corrections.
That layered approach is why neutrino astronomy can make a robust cosmic-flux measurement without assigning a definitive origin to every recorded interaction. The detector measures secondary-particle light; physics models translate that light into event properties; and statistics determine whether the ensemble contains more than Earth’s atmosphere can reasonably supply.
