How scientists determine whether a dinosaur fossil shows cannibalism

Scientists do not diagnose dinosaur cannibalism from a bite mark alone. They infer it when a pattern of feeding damage is best explained by a dinosaur eating another individual of the same species. That requires identifying the trace, determining whether it was made before or after death, assessing whether the marks indicate feeding rather than combat, and evaluating which predators in that ecosystem could have made them. Because each step has limits, published conclusions range from direct evidence to “may” or “likely” evidence.

What would count as evidence of dinosaur cannibalism?

Cannibalism has two parts: one animal must consume another, and the consumer and victim must be the same species. Fossils can preserve evidence of feeding, but they rarely preserve the entire event. A tooth groove, puncture or furrow may show that a carnivore bit a bone; it does not automatically show who made the mark, whether the victim was alive, or whether the biter belonged to the victim’s species.

Paleontologists therefore treat cannibalism as an inference from several lines of evidence. They document the trace’s shape and position, test whether it is consistent with feeding, establish its timing where possible, identify plausible trace makers from the same rock unit, and compare those animals with the victim. They also ask whether fighting, scavenging by another species or damage after burial could explain the pattern better.

No single universal “cannibalism mark” has been established. The strength of a claim depends on how many of these questions a specimen answers and how much uncertainty remains about the biter.

The evidence chain, step by step

1. Describe exactly what is on the bone

Researchers first record the affected bone, the location of each mark and its visible character. They look for grooves, pits, scores, punctures, scrapes and clusters of traces, noting their orientation and relationship to the bone’s surface. Position matters because feeding damage may concentrate where flesh was accessible, while a wound from an attack may occur on a body part exposed during a struggle.

Documentation also guards against overinterpreting an isolated feature. Weathering, sediment abrasion and preparation damage can mimic a bite. A trace must be examined in the context of the bone’s preservation and the rest of the assemblage before it is treated as biological evidence.

2. Determine when the damage occurred

Bone can preserve whether an injury happened while an animal was alive. If new bone formed around a wound, the injury was premortem and the animal survived it for at least some period. A clean mark on dry, brittle bone, by contrast, may have formed after death or during fossilization.

Timing narrows the behavioral interpretation but does not solve it by itself. A healed bite proves an injury during life, not cannibalism. It could reflect territorial combat, mating competition or another intraspecific encounter. Postmortem marks can indicate carcass feeding, yet they do not show whether the biter killed the victim. The distinction is central in the Daspletosaurus material, where healed injuries were interpreted mainly as combat and separate postmortem bites were considered possible feeding evidence.

3. Test whether the traces indicate feeding

Scientists assess the arrangement and context of marks rather than labeling every bite as consumption. Repeated damage on a carcass, traces in places where muscle would have been attached, and patterns consistent with stripping tissue can support feeding. A single puncture in a defensive location may fit an attack better than a meal.

Feeding and scavenging overlap: both involve an animal biting a carcass. The fossil record may show that a theropod consumed tissue without revealing whether it hunted the victim, found it already dead or displaced another scavenger. Cannibalism requires the additional conclusion that the consumer and victim were conspecific.

4. Identify plausible trace makers

Tooth shape and size can narrow the list of animals capable of producing a mark, but assigning an individual trace to a species is often difficult. Several large theropods may have lived in the same ecosystem and had broadly similar teeth. Researchers compare the marks with teeth and bite mechanics of fossils known from the same formation, then consider the relative abundance and body sizes of those candidates.

Ecological context is essential. If a quarry contains multiple credible predators, a mark on a victim cannot automatically be assigned to the most famous or largest one. A species attribution becomes stronger when the trace geometry matches that animal’s teeth and alternative biters are absent, rare or anatomically unsuitable.

5. Establish whether biter and victim could be the same species

The victim’s bones must be identified as far as the material allows, and the proposed biter must be one of the species represented in that ecosystem. This is the decisive cannibalism test. A theropod bite on a sauropod bone may demonstrate feeding by a carnivore, but it is not cannibalism unless the sauropod and the biter were the same species—which they were not in the Morrison Formation example.

Even within one species, size and age can complicate the inference. A large adult may have eaten a juvenile, or several individuals may have contributed marks. The evidence needs to support conspecific identity without assuming that every bone in a mixed quarry belonged to the same animal.

6. Compare alternative explanations

Researchers explicitly weigh combat, scavenging by another taxon, trampling, transport and post-burial damage. Healed premortem injuries favor an encounter during life; concentrated postmortem damage may favor feeding; and ambiguous traces should remain ambiguous. The best interpretation is the one that explains the complete pattern with the fewest unsupported assumptions.

7. State a calibrated conclusion

Studies use terms such as direct evidence, possible and likely to signal how much of the chain is secure. “Direct evidence” in a paper may mean that tooth-marked conspecific bones are present, not that the fossil records a witnessed kill. “May” identifies a plausible but unresolved trace maker. “Likely” indicates that the authors regard cannibalism as the strongest explanation while acknowledging competing possibilities.

Why a bite mark is not enough

  • The biter may be another species. A carnivore-rich ecosystem can produce identical-looking marks from several predators.
  • The interaction may not have been feeding. A healed wound can record combat, not consumption.
  • Feeding does not prove the kill. Postmortem bites show carcass use but not how the animal died.
  • Damage can be non-biological. Abrasion, breakage and preparation can imitate grooves or pits.
  • Mixed deposits complicate identity. Bones from different animals and ages may be concentrated together after transport.

For these reasons, a responsible paper identifies what is observed separately from what is inferred. “A bone bears theropod tooth marks” is an observation. “A member of the same species scavenged it” is an interpretation that needs additional support.

What published dinosaur cases show

Case Observed evidence Trace-maker and victim assessment Published interpretation
Tyrannosaurus rex (2010) Four T. rex specimens with tooth marks made by large carnivorous dinosaurs. The study interpreted the marked remains as conspecific material; the marks show feeding on remains but do not establish that every marked animal was killed by the consumer. Reported as direct evidence of cannibalism.
Daspletosaurus (2015) Numerous healed premortem injuries plus separate postmortem bites on a specimen from Dinosaur Provincial Park. Healed injuries were interpreted mainly as intraspecific combat. The postmortem bites were made by a large tyrannosaurid that may have been another Daspletosaurus. Possible cannibalistic feeding; the “may” qualification remains important.
Mygatt-Moore Quarry Allosaurus survey (2020) Of 2,368 vertebrate fossils surveyed, 684 (28.885%) had at least one theropod bite mark. The quarry’s likely theropod trace makers and their abundance led the authors to argue that the assemblage preserves evidence involving Allosaurus; individual marks are not all assigned to one biter. Likely the first evidence of cannibalism in Allosaurus, with feeding and scavenging considered related but distinct possibilities.
Morrison Formation sauropods (2023) Bite traces catalogued on 68 sauropod bones; no healing was observed on the recorded traces. Traces were attributed to theropods, but several candidate taxa make individual assignment difficult. The victims were sauropods, not conspecific theropods. Evidence of theropod feeding damage, not evidence of cannibalism.

Tyrannosaurus rex: the strongest attribution in the set

Longrich and colleagues’ 2010 study reported four T. rex specimens bearing tooth marks made by large carnivorous dinosaurs and interpreted them as direct evidence of cannibalism. The important point is the combination of marked bones and a conspecific victim attribution. The result supports feeding on members of the same species, but it does not reveal whether the marked animals were killed by the individual that later consumed them. A carcass could have been scavenged after death from another cause.

Daspletosaurus: separating combat from carcass use

The Daspletosaurus specimen demonstrates why timing changes the interpretation. Numerous injuries showed evidence of healing, indicating that the animal survived those wounds. Their distribution and condition were interpreted primarily as intraspecific combat. Separate marks made after death were attributed to a large tyrannosaurid and may have been produced by another Daspletosaurus. The case therefore supports possible, not certain, cannibalism: the feeding interpretation and the species identity of the biter remain linked uncertainties.

Allosaurus at the Mygatt-Moore Quarry: a large local signal

The 2020 survey examined 2,368 vertebrate fossils and found 684 with at least one theropod bite mark, or 28.885% of that sampled collection. The authors argued that the frequency of marks, the likely trace makers and the quarry’s ecological setting likely preserve the first evidence of cannibalism in Allosaurus. The percentage describes this quarry survey only. It is not a rate for all Allosaurus, all theropods or dinosaurs generally, and it does not mean that every marked specimen was bitten by Allosaurus.

Morrison Formation sauropods: useful feeding context, wrong victim for cannibalism

The 2023 Morrison Formation survey catalogued bite traces on 68 sauropod bones and reported no evidence of healing on the observed traces. Several theropod taxa could have made the marks, so the authors cautioned that assigning an individual bite to a particular predator can be difficult. These observations help reconstruct carcass use and predator activity, but sauropods were not conspecific victims of the theropods. The material therefore cannot, by itself, demonstrate cannibalism.

How to read the numbers without overstating them

Fossil counts are properties of a sample. The Mygatt-Moore figures—2,368 fossils examined and 684 with marks—describe the collection and survey methods used at that quarry. They do not estimate the prevalence of cannibalism across a species or across the dinosaur record. Likewise, the four T. rex specimens in the 2010 study are a reported count of cases, not a population frequency. The 68 Morrison Formation bones are a catalogued set of traces, not a count of cannibalistic events.

Sampling affects every percentage. Quarry environment, collection history, which bones survived, how intensively surfaces were examined and whether marked specimens were preferentially recognized can all change the observed frequency. A high local concentration is valuable evidence about that assemblage while remaining unsuitable as a universal behavioral rate.

How scientists distinguish the main competing behaviors

Question Pattern that supports it What it still cannot prove
Combat Premortem wounds with healing, especially in locations exposed during attacks. That the opponents were the same species unless their identities are independently established.
Predation Feeding traces on a victim species in an ecological setting where a plausible predator is present. That the predator killed the victim rather than scavenging it.
Scavenging Postmortem damage concentrated on a carcass. The species of the consumer when multiple theropods could make similar marks.
Cannibalism Feeding damage, a credible same-species trace-maker assignment and a conspecific victim. The exact sequence of death and consumption unless additional evidence preserves it.

A practical checklist for evaluating a claim

  1. Ask what is directly observed. Is the evidence a groove, puncture, cluster of marks, healing response or another feature?
  2. Check timing. Are the traces healed premortem injuries, postmortem bites or uncertain?
  3. Check the behavioral interpretation. Does the pattern fit feeding, combat, scavenging or more than one possibility?
  4. Check the trace-maker assignment. Which species lived in the formation, and how confidently can the marks be matched to one?
  5. Check the victim’s identity. Is the bitten animal demonstrably the same species as the proposed consumer?
  6. Check the wording. “Direct,” “possible” and “likely” carry different evidentiary weight.
  7. Check the sample. Is a count or percentage being presented as a local result, or incorrectly generalized to all dinosaurs?

What the fossil record can—and cannot—tell us

A well-documented bite-mark assemblage can reveal that carnivores fed on dinosaur carcasses and can sometimes identify the likely consumer and victim. It can also separate injuries sustained during life from damage inflicted after death. Those findings illuminate competition, carcass use and the risks of living among large predators.

The record is less capable of recovering the full behavioral story. A mark rarely identifies the exact individual that made it, and postmortem feeding rarely records the cause of death. Even when conspecific feeding is well supported, the safest conclusion is usually that one member of a species consumed remains of another—not that scientists have reconstructed a witnessed attack. The most reliable articles preserve those boundaries instead of turning every theropod bite into a claim of cannibalism.
