A finite resistance reading can result from contact problems, current and voltage criteria, magnetic fields, sample geometry, thermoelectric voltages, or a superconducting path that does not span the entire specimen. Conversely, a tiny connected superconducting region can produce an apparent zero-resistance short without proving that the material is superconducting in bulk.
Researchers therefore combine electrical transport with magnetic measurements and, when possible, a thermodynamic measurement such as specific heat. The case for superconductivity is strongest when independent probes show a transition at consistent conditions and the measurement protocol is fully reported.

Why a nonzero resistance reading does not settle the question
In a transport experiment, scientists pass current through a sample and measure the voltage produced across it. A four-probe arrangement uses separate contacts for delivering current and sensing voltage, reducing errors caused by the resistance of the current leads. It still does not create a perfect detector of zero resistivity.
As the NIST technical discussion of superconducting measurements explains, it is easier to define a superconductor as a material with zero electrical resistivity than it is to verify zero resistivity experimentally. A reported “finite resistance” is always a value obtained with a particular current, voltage sensitivity, temperature sweep, magnetic field, contact arrangement and criterion for calling the resistance zero.

Measurement conditions can change the apparent transition
- Voltage criterion: Instruments have a noise floor and a selected voltage threshold. A resistance may be called zero when the voltage falls below that threshold, while another laboratory reports a small finite value using a more sensitive criterion.
- Current: Excess current can drive part of a sample out of the superconducting state or generate a magnetic field that changes the transition.
- Contacts: A contact can add resistance, create local heating, react chemically with a sample, or inject current unevenly.
- Geometry: A long, thin, irregular or multiphase specimen may not carry current uniformly. Current paths can bypass some regions and concentrate in others.
- Thermoelectric voltages: Temperature differences between contacts can produce a voltage that looks like resistance unless the experiment controls or subtracts it.
- Applied field: Even a modest magnetic field can broaden or shift a transition, particularly in a type-II superconductor.
For this reason, a transport result should report the contact layout, excitation current, field, temperature range, voltage resolution and definition of the transition. Without those details, “the resistance did not reach zero” is not enough information to reject superconductivity.
The independent evidence scientists look for
Superconductivity changes more than the way a sample carries current. It also changes how the sample responds to magnetic fields and, at a bulk transition, how it stores heat. Scientists compare these signatures rather than relying on one convenient feature.
| Method | What it probes | What it can establish | Main limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Four-probe resistance | Electrical transport through the contacted specimen | A resistance transition or a zero-resistance state under stated conditions | Results depend on voltage criterion, contacts, current, field, geometry and possible filamentary paths. |
| DC susceptibility or magnetization | Magnetic shielding and response during field cooling | Diamagnetic shielding and, with field cooling, evidence associated with flux expulsion | Flux pinning and demagnetizing geometry can reduce or distort the measured signal. |
| AC susceptibility | Incremental magnetic response to a small alternating field | A shielding transition and related magnetic response | Loss peaks and frequency-dependent amplitudes are not universal proof of bulk superconductivity. |
| Specific heat | Thermodynamic response near the transition | Evidence that the transition belongs to a substantial fraction of the sample | The anomaly can be small, broadened or difficult to resolve, so it is complementary rather than mandatory in every experiment. |
Step 1: Audit and repeat the electrical transport measurement
When a sample shows a drop in resistance but not a clean zero, the first step is not to declare the result either positive or negative. Researchers recheck the measurement under controlled conditions.

- Document the wiring. Record which contacts supply current and which sense voltage, their spacing, the contact materials and whether the sample is homogeneous or visibly multiphase.
- Reduce the excitation. Repeat the transition with lower currents to test for self-heating, critical-current effects or a current-generated magnetic field.
- Reverse the current. Measuring with both current polarities helps separate an ohmic voltage from thermoelectric offsets. A properly antisymmetrized voltage should change sign with current; a fixed offset points to a thermal or instrumentation contribution.
- Vary the magnetic field. A genuine superconducting transition should respond systematically to applied field, although the exact direction and amount depend on the material and field orientation.
- Repeat with another contact configuration. If the transition changes dramatically when voltage contacts are moved, the original result may have been dominated by a local path or a contact artifact.
A finite value that becomes smaller with improved contacts or lower noise is different from a robust residual resistance that remains under carefully controlled conditions. Neither outcome, by itself, proves or disproves bulk superconductivity.

A concrete contact-related example: CaSb2
In a 2020 study of the nonsymmorphic line-nodal compound CaSb2, the authors combined electrical resistivity, magnetic susceptibility and specific heat. They reported a Meissner-effect onset near 1.8 K, but zero resistance was not observed with one silver-epoxy contact configuration. The authors suggested that the sample might have reacted with air or with the silver epoxy during curing at 120°C. This is a material- and preparation-specific example, not a universal explanation for every finite resistance reading. It illustrates why contact chemistry and sample handling belong in the report.
Step 2: Measure magnetic shielding and flux expulsion
A superconductor excludes magnetic flux from its interior under appropriate conditions. Magnetic measurements seek this response even when a transport path is imperfect.
What zero-field-cooled and field-cooled measurements mean
In a typical DC susceptibility experiment, the sample is cooled in little or no applied field and then measured while warming. A diamagnetic response in this zero-field-cooled protocol indicates magnetic shielding: an applied field is prevented from penetrating the superconducting region.
A field-cooled measurement applies the field while the sample is cooled. The resulting magnetization can provide evidence associated with flux expulsion, commonly called the Meissner effect. The protocol matters: a statement that a sample “shows the Meissner effect” should specify whether the data came from zero-field-cooled shielding, field-cooled magnetization, or another sequence.

Why a weak magnetic signal is not automatically a failure
Type-II superconductors admit magnetic flux in quantized vortices above their lower critical field. Strong pinning can hold those vortices in place and suppress a dramatic field-cooled expulsion signal. The measured susceptibility is also affected by demagnetizing fields created by the sample’s shape. A small or oddly shaped specimen can therefore show a response that is difficult to convert directly into a superconducting volume fraction.
Magnetic evidence must still be large enough and reproducible enough to distinguish it from the sample holder, background signal and ordinary magnetic impurities. Researchers normally compare warming and cooling curves, vary the applied field and characterize the background separately.
Step 3: Use AC susceptibility without treating one feature as a verdict
AC susceptibility applies a small alternating magnetic field and measures the sample’s incremental response. A transition in the in-phase component can indicate shielding; the out-of-phase component often reflects losses associated with vortex motion and energy dissipation.

It should not automatically be described as a direct measurement of flux expulsion. A DC field-cooled measurement is the more direct protocol for investigating that aspect of the Meissner response.

A 1986 analysis by Hein warned that particular AC-loss peaks and frequency-dependent signal magnitudes were not, by themselves, reliable criteria for deciding whether superconductivity was bulk. The point is methodological, not a dismissal of AC susceptibility. A reproducible AC transition becomes more persuasive when it agrees with transport, DC magnetization and, where available, calorimetry.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Step 4: Look for a thermodynamic transition with specific heat
Specific heat measures how much heat is required to change a sample’s temperature. At a superconducting transition, the electronic and collective states can change in a way that produces an anomaly in heat capacity. Because this is a thermodynamic response, it does not depend on finding one continuous conducting path between two voltage contacts.
A specific-heat anomaly at the same transition temperature as the electrical and magnetic changes supports the conclusion that a substantial part of the sample participates. A 1987 calorimetry study used a specific-heat step at the transition as evidence that its ceramic specimen was a bulk superconductor.
Specific heat is not an infallible requirement. The anomaly may be small compared with the lattice heat capacity, broadened by disorder, obscured by addenda or difficult to resolve in a very small sample. The absence of a clearly visible feature limits the strength of a bulk claim; it does not establish that the material is nonsuperconducting.

Step 5: Separate bulk superconductivity from a filamentary path
“Filamentary” or “percolative” superconductivity means that superconducting regions form a narrow connected route through an otherwise normal specimen. That route can sharply lower the measured resistance, or even produce an apparent zero, while most of the sample remains nonsuperconducting.
The reverse situation is also possible: a bulk superconducting region may be present, but cracks, poor contacts, nonsuperconducting layers or an unsuitable current path prevent the transport voltage from reaching the instrument’s zero criterion. Thus zero resistance alone does not establish bulk superconductivity, and finite resistance alone does not rule it out.
The CeIrIn5 example
A 2001 study of the heavy-fermion compound CeIrIn5 compared a zero-resistance anomaly with specific heat and AC susceptibility. The authors interpreted the resistance feature as filamentary superconductivity relative to the bulk transition identified by the other measurements. The example shows why the temperature of a transport anomaly should not automatically be treated as the bulk transition temperature.

How scientists combine the results
There is no single universal test that resolves every finite-resistance case. Instead, researchers weigh the independence and quality of the evidence.
- Strong case: Transport shows a reproducible transition; magnetic measurements show shielding and, where protocol and signal quality permit, field-cooled flux expulsion; and specific heat shows a coincident anomaly.
- Credible but incomplete case: Transport is compromised by contacts or geometry, yet reproducible magnetic shielding and a thermodynamic anomaly occur at the same temperature. The authors should state the transport limitation rather than implying a conventional zero-resistance state.
- Possible filamentary case: A sharp resistance drop or zero appears at a temperature where magnetic and specific-heat data show no corresponding bulk transition. A connected minority path is a plausible explanation.
- Inconclusive case: Only one weak feature is present, the background is not characterized, or the measurement protocol and voltage criterion are missing. More independent measurements are needed.
Scientists also test whether the transition shifts with applied field, depends on current, follows the expected orientation dependence, and survives changes in contact configuration. These checks help distinguish a reproducible superconducting phase from an artifact or a local short.
What a careful report should include
A useful paper or laboratory report lets readers judge the evidence without guessing how the measurement was performed. It should state:
- Sample composition, dimensions, preparation and exposure to air or processing chemicals.
- Current and voltage-contact arrangement, excitation current, voltage resolution and the criterion used to define the transition.
- Temperature sweep direction and rate, applied field, field orientation and whether the field was removed before cooling.
- For DC magnetization, whether the curve was zero-field cooled or field cooled, along with the field strength.
- For AC susceptibility, AC amplitude, frequency and any DC bias.
- Background subtraction, demagnetizing corrections and holder signals where relevant.
- Whether a specific-heat anomaly was measured and how its size and uncertainty were determined.
With those details, a finite resistance reading becomes interpretable evidence rather than a misleading pass-or-fail label. The practical answer to the title question is therefore to triangulate: verify transport as far as the apparatus allows, measure magnetic shielding and flux behavior with the correct protocol, and seek a thermodynamic anomaly when a bulk claim matters.
