How Scientists Date Neanderthal Injuries and Other Archaeological Finds

Scientists almost never date a healed Neanderthal injury as an isolated event. Instead, they establish the age of the individual, fossil-bearing layer, tooth, bone, charcoal, sediment, or cave deposit. Stratigraphy supplies the order of layers; radiometric and trapped-charge techniques provide numerical ages when suitable material survives. The trauma can then be placed within that dated interval, with uncertainty stated explicitly.

What an archaeological date actually dates

A fracture records an event during an individual’s life, but it does not contain a built-in calendar label. A healed break proves that the injury happened before death and that the person survived long enough for bone repair. The calendar context normally comes from the specimen and its surroundings: the sediment layer in which it was found, a tooth or bone, charcoal from the same deposit, a cave mineral such as flowstone, or mineral grains in the sediment.

This distinction matters for every archaeological find. A laboratory result may date the material itself, the last time sediment grains saw sunlight, the formation of a mineral coating, or the time a tooth accumulated radiation damage. Researchers must then demonstrate that the dated material is genuinely associated with the Neanderthal or tool being studied. A defensible statement therefore looks like “the remains were deposited approximately 39–45 thousand years ago, based on specified samples and methods,” not “the injury happened on a particular date.”

Stratigraphy: the first chronological framework

Stratigraphy uses the position and relationships of sediment layers to establish a sequence. In an undisturbed cave or open-air site, lower layers generally predate higher layers. Contacts between layers, buried surfaces, sediment composition, and the position of fossils and artifacts allow archaeologists to determine whether two finds belong to the same depositional episode.

Stratigraphy is relative dating: it establishes “earlier than” and “later than,” not a number of years. The method is only as reliable as the field record. Burrowing animals, water flow, rock falls, excavation disturbance, or later human activity can move objects between layers. Researchers map the find in three dimensions, document the sediment around it, and test whether the dated sample came from the same undisturbed unit. Numerical methods are interpreted against this geological sequence rather than replacing it.

Which methods provide numerical ages?

No single technique works for every Neanderthal site. Material, expected age, burial environment, and chemical history determine which method is appropriate. The table summarizes what each method measures and the principal ways it can go wrong.

Method Typical material What is dated Main limitations and checks
Radiocarbon (14C/AMS) Charcoal, bone, tooth or other once-living carbon-bearing material Time since carbon exchange stopped, within the method’s useful Late Pleistocene range Younger or older carbon contamination, inadequate pretreatment, and poor association can create spurious ages
Uranium-series (especially U-Th) Cave deposits, flowstone and teeth that take up uranium-bearing water Radioactive decay from uranium-234 toward thorium-230 after uranium enters the system Detrital thorium and later uranium movement can bias results; uranium uptake history must be evaluated
Electron spin resonance (ESR) Tooth enamel and other radiation-exposed materials Trapped charge accumulated from environmental radiation Requires a dose-rate and burial-history model; often paired with uranium-series dating
Optically stimulated luminescence (OSL) Quartz or feldspar sediment grains Time since grains were last exposed to sufficient light Incomplete light exposure, later mixing, or an incorrect dose model can produce misleading ages
Thermoluminescence (TL) Heated minerals, including sediments or artifacts exposed to fire Time since the material was last heated enough to reset its signal Requires evidence that heating reset the clock and that the material remained closed afterward
Amino-acid racemization Appropriate proteins or shell and tooth materials Change in amino-acid molecular structure after burial Temperature, moisture, species and chemical history affect the rate; best used as an independent comparison

Radiocarbon dating and the contamination problem

Radiocarbon dating measures the carbon remaining in once-living material. Accelerator mass spectrometry (AMS) can work with very small samples, which is valuable when only a fragment of bone, tooth or charcoal is available. The result is meaningful only after the laboratory removes substances that entered the sample after burial and confirms that the carbon belongs to the archaeological event.

El Sidrón in Spain demonstrates why pretreatment is not a technical footnote. Recent carbon contamination affected charcoal and teeth that were not adequately pretreated, producing spurious radiocarbon values. In the same site, the most consistent radiocarbon results clustered around 35–40 thousand years and 48–49 thousand years, while other methods provided an additional test of the chronology. A radiocarbon number that conflicts with the layer and with independent methods is a signal to investigate contamination, not a reason to choose the most convenient date.

Uranium-series dating of cave deposits and teeth

Uranium-series methods exploit radioactive decay in uranium-bearing mineral systems. Water moving through a cave can carry uranium into flowstone, stalagmite or fossil tooth. Thorium is comparatively insoluble, so the uranium-234 to thorium-230 relationship can act as a clock after uranium enters the material.

The method does not assume that every atom in a sample stayed in place. Detrital thorium, inherited from sediment particles, can make a flowstone result appear too old. Uranium can also move into or out of a tooth or deposit after burial. Researchers therefore analyze the sample’s chemistry, model open-system behavior where possible, and compare the result with stratigraphy and another dating method. A U-Th age on a flowstone may provide a minimum or maximum constraint for a fossil rather than the fossil’s exact burial age, depending on whether the mineral formed before or after the remains were deposited.

ESR: reading trapped charge in tooth enamel

Tooth enamel acts as a dosimeter. Natural radiation from surrounding sediment and the tooth itself dislodges electrons, leaving trapped charge in crystal defects. ESR measures that signal and combines it with an estimate of the environmental dose rate and the time since the signal began accumulating.

Uranium uptake by a tooth is often gradual rather than instantaneous. For that reason, fossil-teeth studies commonly combine ESR with uranium-series measurements. The uranium-series component helps model when uranium entered the enamel and dentine; ESR supplies the accumulated radiation signal. The result is an age estimate with uncertainty, not a direct reading of the moment of injury.

At Galería de las Estatuas in Atapuerca, combined ESR/U-series ages generally agreed with earlier OSL and single-grain thermally transferred OSL (TT-OSL) results, confirming an Upper Pleistocene chronology. Davinia Moreno of CENIEH summarized the cross-check: “In general, the ages found by dating fossil teeth with the combined method ESR/U-series agree with those obtained previously using Optically Stimulated Luminescence (OSL) and single-grain thermally transferred OSL (TT-OSL), and they confirm the Upper Pleistocene chronology of the site.”

OSL and thermoluminescence: dating the sediment’s last reset

OSL measures light-sensitive trapped charge in sediment grains. Sunlight can release that signal before burial; once grains are covered, charge accumulates again. An OSL age therefore estimates the time since the grains were last adequately exposed to light, which may closely approximate deposition if the sediment was well bleached.

Thermoluminescence (TL) uses heat rather than light to release trapped charge. It can date heated materials or sediments when a fire or other heating event reset the signal. Both methods usually date the layer around a fossil or tool, not the object’s biological history. Partial light exposure, sediment mixing, or a dose-rate error can widen uncertainty or produce an age that does not represent the burial event.

At Orgnac 3 in France, thermoluminescence together with ESR/U-series constrained a Neanderthal-rich sediment sequence to roughly 300,000–374,000 years ago, corresponding to marine isotope stages (MIS) 10 through 8. The value of this result is the convergence of methods on the sequence, rather than a claim that every artifact or injury within it has one identical age.

How a research team builds a defensible chronology

  1. Document the context in the field. Record the layer, coordinates, orientation, sediment contacts and evidence of disturbance before removing the specimen.
  2. Define the event to be dated. Decide whether the target is the fossil’s burial, the formation of a flowstone, the last heating of a sediment, the last sunlight exposure of grains, or the time carbon exchange stopped.
  3. Select material that matches the event. A tooth may support ESR/U-series, charcoal may support radiocarbon, and sediment grains may support OSL. A sample from a different layer is not automatically an acceptable proxy.
  4. Screen for contamination and open-system behavior. Laboratories use chemical pretreatment for carbon, assess detrital thorium in U-series work, and evaluate uranium movement and dose history for ESR.
  5. Measure more than one sample when possible. Replicate teeth, sediment aliquots or flowstone subsamples reveal whether one result is an outlier.
  6. Cross-check independent clocks. Compare radiocarbon, U-series, ESR, OSL, TL, amino-acid racemization and the stratigraphic order only when their assumptions fit the material.
  7. Report the association and uncertainty. State sample type, method, uncertainty, laboratory result, layer relationship and any minimum or maximum interpretation.

Case study: El Sidrón shows why dates disagree

El Sidrón is especially instructive because several methods were applied to the same archaeological problem. Recent carbon contamination affected charcoal and inadequately pretreated teeth, while detrital thorium made some flowstone U-Th analyses unreliable. The radiocarbon results that remained most consistent clustered near 35–40 ka and 48–49 ka. Most ESR and amino-acid-racemization results fell around 39–45 ka, and OSL bracketed the sedimentary layer containing the Neanderthal remains.

The lesson is not that one technique is universally correct. Each result must be tied to a particular sample and failure mode. A contaminated charcoal fragment can be younger than the layer; detrital thorium can make flowstone appear older; OSL can date sediment grains that were incompletely exposed to light. Agreement among the reliable subsets is stronger evidence than a single attractive number.

Case study: De Nadale puts uncertainty in the number

At De Nadale Cave in Italy, three fossil teeth produced U-S/ESR ages of 79 ± 9 ka, 72 ± 11 ka and 55 ± 11 ka. Their weighted mean was 70.1 ± 5.9 ka, reported by researchers from Southern Cross University and the University of Ferrara in 2025. The results were consistent with a prior U/Th minimum age.

The plus-or-minus value is part of the result, not optional decoration. It expresses the estimated uncertainty under the method’s assumptions. The spread among individual teeth also shows why researchers examine several specimens and compare the combined estimate with an independent constraint.

Why an injury cannot be assigned a falsely precise date

A healed fracture can be described anatomically: its location, remodeling, and degree of healing indicate that trauma occurred during life. Degenerative changes may indicate disease, repeated mechanical stress or age-related wear. The Australian Museum’s Neanderthal type specimen, for example, was described with a healed broken hip and arthritis affecting the lower neck, back, hip and shoulders.

Those observations do not identify the year of the accident. The calendar context comes from dating the individual, layer or associated deposits. If the remains were moved after burial, the age of a nearby charcoal fragment may not be the age of the skeleton. If the specimen’s layer is securely tied to several independent results, the injury can be placed within that chronological window; it cannot be narrowed to the moment of impact without evidence that does not normally survive.

How to read an archaeological age report

  • Look for the dated material. “Tooth enamel,” “flowstone,” “charcoal” and “sediment grains” represent different clocks.
  • Check whether the result dates the specimen or its context. OSL and many TL results primarily constrain the surrounding layer.
  • Read the uncertainty and units. A value such as 70.1 ± 5.9 ka is an estimate with a stated error, not a precise timestamp.
  • Ask how association was demonstrated. The sample should come from the same documented layer or a clearly related deposit.
  • Check for independent agreement. Concordant methods and multiple samples increase confidence; disagreement prompts investigation of contamination, mixing or chemical movement.
  • Distinguish minimum and maximum ages. A mineral formed before a fossil can provide a minimum constraint, while a later overlying deposit may provide a maximum constraint.

The practical bottom line for Neanderthal injuries

Scientists date the archaeological setting that contains the injured individual, then interpret the trauma within that interval. Stratigraphy establishes sequence; radiocarbon, uranium-series, ESR, OSL, TL and amino-acid racemization date suitable materials under different assumptions. Contamination, detrital thorium, uranium migration, mixed layers and weak specimen association can all mislead a laboratory result. The strongest chronology is the one in which independent samples and methods agree, and the published age names its material, uncertainty and relationship to the fossil.
