Scientists do not rely on one “Mars rock test.” They first document a target’s setting, then combine remote laser readings, contact chemistry, imaging, mineral analysis and (for selected Perseverance targets) sealed cores. Curiosity mainly converts drilled or scooped material into powder and analyzes it inside the rover with CheMin and SAM. Perseverance performs an extensive inspection, cores chosen rocks and seals the cores for possible future laboratory study on Earth. Each measurement narrows the geological story; none, by itself, proves that life existed.
What happens before a rover takes a sample?
Analysis starts before drilling. Rover teams use navigation and science cameras to map layers, veins, nodules, soil patches and other features in their geological setting. A rock’s position relative to surrounding strata can be as important as its chemistry: it helps scientists decide whether a measurement represents a local feature, a weathered surface or material transported from elsewhere.

Curiosity can gather information without touching a target. Its ChemCam fires a laser at a small spot, creating a hot plasma whose emitted light reveals elemental information. Because the laser can reach targets at a distance, the team can compare many points before committing to a drill location. The Alpha Particle X-ray Spectrometer (APXS) is placed against rock or soil for a contact measurement of elemental abundances. Cameras and these complementary instruments provide the context needed to interpret a later powder analysis.

Curiosity’s in-situ workflow: from rock to powder
1. Select and characterize a target
After imaging and remote or contact measurements, the team commands Curiosity to drill a suitable rock or scoop loose soil. ChemCam and APXS readings are not interchangeable: ChemCam offers remote elemental information, while APXS measures elements at the contact point. Together with images and the rock’s setting, they help scientists choose where to collect material and explain differences between the surface and the interior.
2. Drill, collect and sieve the material
Curiosity’s drill pulverizes rock rather than lifting out a large intact hand specimen. The resulting powder enters CHIMRA (Collection and Handling for In-situ Martian Rock Analysis), the rover’s collection, handling and delivery system. CHIMRA can receive material from the drill or a scoop, portion it and pass it through a sieve described by NASA as 150 micrometers across. NASA compares that opening with an average human hair, about 100 micrometers thick, to give a sense of scale.
The quantity from Curiosity’s first drill operation was estimated at about 14 cubic centimeters—roughly a tablespoon—from scoop imagery. That figure is a historical engineering estimate for that event, not a standard amount for every later sample. CHIMRA’s purpose is controlled handling: it separates a usable fine fraction and presents measured portions to the rover’s internal laboratories while limiting the chance that one instrument consumes all available material.
3. Send portions to two different laboratories
CHIMRA routes portions of the prepared powder to CheMin and SAM. The instruments answer different questions, so a mineral result from CheMin and a gas result from SAM are interpreted together rather than treated as duplicate tests.

What Curiosity’s CheMin instrument reveals
X-ray diffraction identifies minerals
CheMin directs X-rays through a loose powdered sample and records the resulting diffraction pattern. Crystal structures bend and scatter X-rays in characteristic ways; matching the pattern to known structures lets scientists identify minerals, including minerals that may look similar in a camera image or have overlapping elemental compositions.
Mineral identification is especially useful for reconstructing past environments. Certain minerals form or alter in the presence of water, salts or particular chemical conditions. Finding one can show that an environment was capable of preserving a geological record, but the mineral itself is not evidence that organisms lived there.
Instrument capacity and operating time
| CheMin specification or result | What the figure means |
|---|---|
| Up to 85 milligrams per sample | NASA’s stated sample capacity; it is an instrument limit, not a universal mass collected by every drill operation. |
| 32 cells on the sample wheel | The wheel includes cells for Martian samples and calibration activities. |
| 10–30 hours per analysis | NASA’s 2023 description says an analysis is spread over multiple nights; the range is not a promise that every target takes the same time. |
| 42 soil and rock samples by December 2022 | A cumulative count reported by NASA as of that date, not a projected lifetime total. |
Because CheMin measures a diffraction pattern from a mixture, scientists examine the full pattern and its quality, not a single peak. They compare the result with other observations, including elemental data and the geological setting, before deciding which minerals are present and what processes could have produced them.
What Curiosity’s SAM laboratory reveals
Heating powder releases gases for analysis
SAM (Sample Analysis at Mars) moves a portion of powder into an oven. For most samples, heating to about 1,000°C releases gases and volatile compounds from the material. SAM then combines three analytical techniques: gas chromatography separates compounds, a mass spectrometer measures their masses, and a tunable laser spectrometer examines selected gases.

NASA Science lists sensitivity below one part per billion for an organic compound. Sensitivity describes how small an amount the instrument may detect under its operating conditions; it does not mean that a detected organic compound is biological. Organic molecules can form through nonbiological chemistry, arrive in meteorites or survive from an earlier environment. Scientists therefore consider molecular identity, abundance, possible contamination, mineral context and geological history together.
Why SAM and CheMin complement each other
- CheMin: identifies crystalline minerals through X-ray diffraction.
- SAM: characterizes gases, volatile compounds and organics released or produced during heating.
- Context instruments: ChemCam, APXS and cameras connect those laboratory results to a specific spot, layer and surface texture.
A rock can contain minerals that indicate water-related alteration while SAM detects organic compounds; that combination may make a site scientifically important, but it still does not establish that life was present. Curiosity’s measurements can assess chemistry and habitability-related conditions, not determine that life exists or existed.
Perseverance’s workflow: inspect, abrade, core and cache
1. Compare the target with its geological twin
Before coring, Perseverance examines the chosen target and a nearby “geologic twin,” a comparable surface intended to preserve context outside the drilled hole. This comparison helps distinguish properties intrinsic to the rock from effects caused by dust, weathering or an unusual patch.

2. Remove the weathered surface
Perseverance’s abrasion tool cuts a fresh, relatively flat patch. NASA’s 2021 description gives an example patch about 2 inches (5 centimeters) across. Abrasion removes altered outer material so instruments can inspect less-weathered rock, but the operation also produces cuttings that may obscure the surface. Cleaning, close-up imaging and repeated observations are therefore part of the characterization rather than optional finishing work.

3. Make a multi-instrument survey
The rover examines the fresh patch with proximity instruments including SHERLOC, PIXL and WATSON, while SuperCam and Mastcam-Z contribute remote measurements and images. These instruments provide different kinds of mineral, chemical and visual evidence. The team uses the combined record to decide whether the target merits a permanent core and to document exactly where that core came from.
4. Core and seal the selected material
Perseverance uses a rotary-percussive drill to cut a cylindrical core into a sample tube. The rover images the tube’s contents, checks the sample and seals the tube for caching. NASA’s 2021 first-sample release described the core as slightly thicker than a pencil. The sealed tube preserves a physical piece of the rock rather than sending powder into an onboard CheMin- or SAM-style laboratory.
The cited mission release described later missions as the intended means of returning such tubes to Earth. That is a plan stated in a dated source, not a current schedule or a guarantee that every cached tube will be recovered. If return occurs, laboratories on Earth—not Perseverance itself—would perform detailed analyses with instruments far larger and more flexible than a rover can carry.

Curiosity and Perseverance at a glance
| Question | Curiosity | Perseverance |
|---|---|---|
| Main sampling purpose | Prepare powder and analyze it inside the rover with CheMin and SAM. | Collect and seal selected cores for possible later return and Earth-laboratory study. |
| Before sampling | Imaging plus remote ChemCam and contact APXS measurements help select and interpret targets. | Examines a target and geological twin, abrades a fresh patch, then surveys it with SHERLOC, PIXL, WATSON, SuperCam and Mastcam-Z. |
| Physical preparation | Drills or scoops material; CHIMRA handles and sieves it through a 150-micrometer screen. | Uses a rotary-percussive drill to produce a core, images it and seals the tube. |
| Immediate scientific payoff | Mineral and heated-gas chemistry is measured on Mars during the mission. | Rover measurements establish context; the most detailed work on the sealed core depends on possible sample return. |
| What a result can establish | Mineral assemblages, elemental composition, volatile chemistry and clues about past environments. | Target selection and contextual observations, plus a preserved sample for future laboratory tests. |
How scientists turn measurements into a geological conclusion
- Check the setting. Images and stratigraphic relationships show whether the target is bedrock, loose soil, a vein, a coating or an altered surface.
- Compare measurement types. Remote laser spectra, contact elemental data, X-ray diffraction and heated-gas chemistry probe different properties. Agreement strengthens an interpretation; disagreement can reveal mixed materials or surface alteration.
- Separate observation from inference. “A mineral was identified” is an observation. “The rock formed in a wet environment” is an interpretation that must fit mineral chemistry, textures and geological context.
- Assess preservation potential. Some minerals and sedimentary settings can protect organic compounds or other biosignatures. That makes a location a compelling target, but it is not a detection of life.
- Track uncertainty and contamination. Instrument calibration cells, blank measurements, dust, weathering and the small amount of material available all affect confidence. Teams compare repeated readings and calibration data before publishing a conclusion.
This layered approach prevents a single striking signal from carrying more meaning than the evidence supports. A laser spot may indicate an element, while CheMin identifies a mineral and SAM detects an organic compound; only their combined pattern, tied to the rock’s setting, supports a defensible account of Martian history.

What these analyses can—and cannot—say about life
- Minerals are not organisms. A water-associated mineral can indicate conditions that might preserve a biosignature, but it can also form through entirely abiotic reactions.
- Organic compounds are not automatically biological. “Organic” refers to carbon-containing chemistry, not to a living origin.
- Habitability is not habitation. Evidence that temperatures, water or chemistry could have supported life is different from evidence that life was actually present.
- Rover data are constrained by sample size and location. A drill powder or laser spot represents a tiny part of a planet-wide record, so scientists avoid generalizing one result to all of Mars.
For that reason, NASA describes CheMin as helping identify minerals associated with environments that may preserve biosignatures while also stating that Curiosity cannot determine whether signs of life are present. Perseverance’s cached cores are intended to enable more exhaustive tests only if a future sample-return effort delivers them to Earth.
Why the two missions use different strategies
Curiosity was built to perform laboratory-style measurements on Mars. Turning rock into a fine, managed powder lets CheMin and SAM provide results during the rover’s traverse, but it consumes or alters the sample and leaves no intact core for a later Earth laboratory.
Perseverance gives priority to preserving selected material. Its abrasion and instrument survey reduce the risk of sealing an unrepresentative or heavily weathered piece, while the tube and cache system retain a physical archive. The trade-off is that the most sophisticated analyses are deferred: the rover can characterize the target, but detailed Earth-laboratory work depends on retrieval.

A concise answer to the reader’s question
Scientists analyze a Martian rock by building evidence in stages: observe its geological context, measure its surface remotely and at contact, expose fresh material when needed, then either process powder inside Curiosity or preserve a core with Perseverance. CheMin identifies minerals, SAM analyzes gases and organics released by heating, and Perseverance’s proximity and remote instruments guide which cores are worth saving. The scientific conclusion comes from the agreement—or informative disagreement—among these independent measurements, always with the limitation that mineral, organic and habitability evidence does not by itself prove life.
