How Scientists Analyze Exoplanet Atmospheres From Starlight

Scientists determine the chemicals in an exoplanet’s atmosphere by analyzing how the planet changes light from its star. A spectrograph spreads that light into wavelengths; atoms and molecules remove particular wavelengths, leaving absorption features that act as molecular fingerprints. During a transit, some starlight passes through the planet’s atmospheric rim, so comparing the star’s spectrum outside the transit with the spectrum during it produces a transmission spectrum.

This is an inference from remote light, not a sample collected from a world more than 100 light-years away. The signal can be faint, and clouds or hazes can hide features, but sensitive observatories can still identify atmospheric constituents under favorable conditions.

What an exoplanet spectrum actually shows

White starlight is a mixture of many wavelengths. A spectrum records the brightness at each wavelength instead of treating the light as one combined beam. When light encounters gas, atoms and molecules absorb specific wavelength ranges determined by their energy levels. The missing or weakened wavelengths form features that can be compared with laboratory and atmospheric models.

NASA summarizes the principle this way: “Different types of chemicals in the atmosphere absorb different colors of the starlight spectrum, so the colors that are missing tell astronomers which atoms and molecules are present.” You can read the explanation in NASA’s overview of Webb’s impact on exoplanet research.

A feature is evidence that a constituent is consistent with the measured light; it is not a photograph of a molecule and does not by itself prove a single, unique atmospheric recipe. Scientists compare the data with possible compositions and account for the observation’s uncertainty.

How transmission spectroscopy works during a transit

Transmission spectroscopy is the most direct way to use a star as a backlight. The method samples the thin atmospheric edge that a planet presents while crossing its star. NASA describes the basic detection and characterization process in How We Find and Characterize Exoplanets.

1. Establish a stellar baseline

Researchers first observe the host star without the planet blocking it and measure brightness across the relevant wavelengths. This baseline captures the star’s spectrum and provides the reference needed to recognize the planet’s much smaller effect. Stellar variability and the instrument’s response must be considered because a change in the star or detector can imitate or obscure an atmospheric signal.

2. Record the in-transit spectrum

As the planet moves across the stellar disk, it blocks most of the light from the area behind the planet. A small additional portion of starlight travels through the atmosphere around the planet’s edge before reaching the telescope. Gas at a wavelength it absorbs makes the planet appear slightly larger at that wavelength, changing the measured transit depth.

3. Subtract or compare the two observations

The in-transit spectrum is compared with the out-of-transit baseline. The wavelength-dependent difference is the transmission spectrum. It is not simply the spectrum of the atmosphere: it is the star’s light after passing through a curved atmospheric path, combined with the much larger unfiltered stellar signal.

4. Match features to molecular signatures

Scientists test whether the positions and shapes of features agree with known signatures of molecules and atoms. A water-vapor feature, for example, must occur where water absorbs and must fit the overall spectrum after temperature, pressure, clouds and instrumental effects are modeled. Several constituents can overlap, so the result is usually a set of favored compositions and confidence limits rather than an inventory read directly from the air.

What part of the atmosphere is being sampled?

Transmission observations pass through the atmospheric limb, not straight down to the surface. They are most sensitive to the relatively low-pressure layers that extend above the planet’s main disk. The path length through this edge can make weak absorption detectable, but it also means the measurement represents a limited atmospheric region rather than every altitude or location.

Clouds and hazes can block the deeper layers. If they absorb or scatter the light before it reaches the telescope, molecular features from below may be muted or absent. NASA’s Exoplanet Science Strategy discusses how clouds, hazes and the sampled atmospheric column limit interpretation across observing methods.

Three complementary ways to study an atmosphere

Transit data are only one type of atmospheric evidence. Astronomers choose a method according to the planet’s orbit, brightness, size, temperature and separation from its star.

Method Light measured Atmospheric view and principal limitation
Transmission spectroscopy Starlight filtered through the atmosphere during a transit Samples the atmospheric edge at relatively low pressures; clouds and hazes can mute features.
Thermal emission and phase observations The planet’s own emitted light at different orbital phases Adds information about emitted heat and how conditions vary around the planet; interpretation requires models of atmospheric structure.
Direct imaging and spectroscopy Planetary reflected or thermal light separated from the much brighter star Probes the visible hemisphere and a different atmospheric column from a transit; separating the faint planet from starlight is difficult.

NASA explains these approaches, including phase-dependent and direct-imaging observations, in How Will Webb Study Exoplanets?. Combining methods can reveal both composition and how temperature or other conditions vary across a planet, because each technique samples different light and regions.

Thermal emission and phase curves

A planet glows in infrared wavelengths according to its temperature. Observing that emitted light at several points in its orbit can show how the dayside, nightside and intermediate regions differ in heat. Spectroscopy then tests which atmospheric constituents are compatible with the emitted spectrum. NASA describes combining heat-emission maps with spectroscopy to model atmospheric structure.

Direct imaging

In direct imaging, an instrument suppresses or separates the star’s overwhelming brightness so that the planet’s reflected or thermal light can be measured. The resulting spectrum comes from the hemisphere facing the observer, rather than from a thin ring passing in front of the star. This changes which pressures, temperatures and clouds dominate the signal.

Why the measurement is difficult for distant planets

The planet’s atmospheric contribution is tiny compared with the host star’s light. Even when the planet is large enough to produce a measurable transit, the atmospheric annulus is only a small addition to the blocked planetary disk. Instruments therefore collect and calibrate large amounts of light, and analysts compare wavelength bins carefully rather than relying on one conspicuous color.

More collected light generally improves confidence in weak features. NASA’s guide to reading an Earth-like exoplanet’s transmission spectrum emphasizes that the signals can be extremely faint. Detecting Earth-like atmospheric features is especially challenging; a result obtained for a large, hot, favorable target should not be generalized to every exoplanet.

Distance itself does not require scientists to travel to the system. The telescope receives photons that have crossed interstellar space, and spectroscopy extracts information encoded in those photons. The practical limits are photon scarcity, stellar and instrumental noise, the planet’s geometry and the atmosphere’s own clouds or haze.

Case study: Webb’s water-vapor spectrum from WASP-96 b

WASP-96 b illustrates what a favorable target and a sensitive observatory can reveal. NASA reports that the James Webb Space Telescope’s first transmission spectrum of this planet showed clear signs of water vapor that earlier spectra had only hinted at. The observation and its interpretation are described in NASA’s release on Webb’s detailed view of WASP-96 b.

The spectrum covered wavelengths from 0.6 to 2.8 microns. NASA says the result was made from analysis of 280 individual spectra captured during the observation. That count describes this specific 2022 analysis; it is not a universal requirement for every exoplanet or every atmospheric detection.

The water signature is inferred because the measured wavelength-dependent changes align with water vapor’s expected absorption pattern under atmospheric models. It does not mean the telescope resolved individual water molecules or established that every layer of the planet contains the same amount of vapor.

How clouds, hazes and model assumptions change the answer

Muted or missing features

A high-altitude cloud deck or haze can make the transmission spectrum look flatter by blocking light from deeper layers. A flat spectrum therefore does not automatically mean an atmosphere lacks absorbing gases; it may mean the relevant layers are hidden or the data are not precise enough.

Limited atmospheric coverage

A transit samples a narrow annulus around the limb at the times and pressures reached by the starlight path. Thermal emission emphasizes regions with strong temperature contrast, while direct imaging emphasizes the visible hemisphere. Different methods can therefore produce complementary, not identical, views.

Degenerate interpretations

Different mixtures of gases, temperatures, pressure profiles and cloud properties can sometimes produce similar broad features. Analysts evaluate which combinations fit the data and how strongly alternatives are excluded. The responsible conclusion is often “consistent with” a molecule over a stated wavelength range, with uncertainty, rather than an absolute claim that no other composition is possible.

What scientists can and cannot conclude

A robust spectral feature can support the presence of a particular atom or molecule in the portion of the atmosphere that contributes to the measured light. Repeated or complementary observations can strengthen the interpretation by testing whether the feature persists under different conditions, although the available evidence and precision vary by target.

  • Can support: that measured absorption or emission features are compatible with specific atmospheric constituents.
  • Can estimate: how atmospheric structure and temperature models compare with the observed spectrum.
  • Cannot automatically establish: a complete global composition, a surface measurement, or the presence of life from one molecule alone.
  • Must report: the wavelength range, observing geometry, signal strength and the effects of clouds, hazes and model uncertainty.

A practical reading guide for an exoplanet atmosphere result

  1. Identify the observing geometry. Determine whether the result uses a transit, thermal-emission or phase observation, or direct imaging. That tells you which atmospheric region contributes most of the signal.
  2. Check the wavelength coverage. A claimed molecule must have a signature within the wavelengths actually observed. A result covering 0.6–2.8 microns, such as the WASP-96 b example, cannot be treated as a measurement of every possible spectral band.
  3. Look for the baseline comparison. Transmission work depends on comparing in-transit light with an out-of-transit stellar spectrum. Without that reference, a wavelength change could come from the star or instrument rather than the planet.
  4. Read the uncertainty and alternatives. Ask whether clouds, hazes, overlapping molecular signatures or a limited atmospheric column could produce a similar pattern.
  5. Keep the conclusion proportional. “Water-vapor features are detected” is narrower and more defensible than “the planet has an Earth-like atmosphere.”

The central idea

Exoplanet atmospheric chemistry is remote spectroscopy: measure light by wavelength, compare it with a baseline or with planetary emission, and interpret absorption or emission features using known molecular signatures. Transit spectroscopy lets a planet’s atmospheric rim filter starlight; thermal and phase observations add the planet’s own heat; direct imaging isolates reflected or emitted planetary light. The method can reveal constituents hundreds of light-years away, but every result remains a model-based inference shaped by faint signals, clouds, hazes, observing geometry and the wavelengths an instrument can collect.
