How scammers use AI to make online fraud more convincing

Scammers use generative AI to improve familiar fraud rather than inventing an entirely new category of crime. Text generators produce natural-sounding messages, image tools create profile photos and fake documents, voice-cloning systems imitate relatives or executives, and synthetic video can make a false identity look present and authoritative. The result is faster, more personal and more convincing social engineering.

The safest response is not to become an expert at spotting a deepfake. Treat urgency, secrecy and unusual payment requests as reasons to pause, end the conversation and verify the claim through a phone number, website or colleague you already know is genuine. A familiar voice, polished message or realistic video is not proof of identity.

What AI changes in an online scam

Most AI-enabled fraud still follows an old pattern: establish trust, create pressure and get the target to transfer money, reveal information or click a malicious link. AI changes the economics and the polish of that process. Criminals can draft convincing messages in seconds, create many believable identities, translate conversations, generate supporting images and maintain a chat with several targets at once.

The FBI’s December 3, 2024 public service announcement says generative AI reduces the time and effort criminals must spend deceiving targets. That does not make every scam sophisticated, and it does not make AI a reliable indicator of fraud. It means that spelling errors, awkward phrasing and obviously artificial images may disappear from scams that still rely on the same emotional pressure.

  • Language: Translation and rewriting can remove some clues that a sender is not who they claim to be.
  • Consistency: A fake profile, document, website, voice message and video can be made to support the same invented story.

These capabilities increase plausibility, not legitimacy. The identity and request still need to be checked independently.

How scammers use AI across text, images, voice and video

Believable text, chat and fake profiles

Generative text systems can write phishing emails, direct messages and customer-support conversations in a tone suited to the target. They can produce multiple follow-ups, answer objections and translate messages into other languages. The FBI also describes fictitious social-media profiles, fraudulent investment-site copy and chatbots placed on scam websites to encourage a click on a malicious link.

A message may therefore look professional, contain your name and use idiomatic language while still leading to credential theft, malware, an investment payment or a request to continue the conversation on another platform. The useful question is not whether the wording sounds machine-written. Ask whether the sender and the requested action can be verified through a channel you choose yourself.

Profile photos, fake documents and fabricated evidence

Image-generation tools can create a face for a dating or social-media profile, alter photographs and produce visual material that appears to support a story. The FBI lists fake identity documents and credentials, false celebrity endorsements, invented disaster imagery used in donation appeals and images used in sextortion schemes.

Image quality is not authentication. A passport-style portrait, company badge, license, invoice, celebrity photograph or disaster scene can be fabricated or taken out of context. Do not treat an image as independent confirmation when it arrived from the same person or account making the claim. Verify the underlying person, organization or event separately.

Voice cloning and fake family emergencies

A short, publicly available audio clip can provide enough material for a convincing imitation. In a common emergency scam, the caller claims to be a child, grandchild or other relative, says there has been an accident or arrest and demands immediate, secret payment. The Federal Trade Commission warns that requests may involve a wire transfer, cryptocurrency, a payment app or gift cards.

Voice quality does not settle the question. A real person can sound unusual because of stress, a poor connection or illness, and a cloned voice can sound natural. Hang up and call the relative on a number already saved in your phone or obtained independently. A family code phrase agreed in advance is useful because the scammer cannot learn it merely by imitating a voice. You can also ask a question only the real person would know, but do not let a correct answer replace a callback when money or sensitive information is involved.

Executive, bank and government impersonation

Criminals can use cloned audio or generated video to pose as a company executive, supplier, public official, law-enforcement officer or bank representative. A supposed executive may instruct an employee to wire funds, change payroll details or disclose internal information. A fake bank or government representative may claim that an account is compromised and demand a transfer, code or remote access.

Use the organization’s established procedure, not the caller’s instructions. For a business payment, confirm the request with the executive or supplier through a separate, previously recorded channel and follow dual-approval rules. For a bank or agency, end the call and start a new contact using the number on a statement, card or official website that you navigate yourself. Do not use a link, callback number or email address supplied in the suspicious contact.

Synthetic video and investment promotion

Fabricated video can depict a public figure, executive, law-enforcement officer or online acquaintance. Scammers may use it to promote an investment opportunity or to persuade a target that a remote romantic contact is real. The presence of a moving face, a live-looking interview or a familiar setting does not prove who is behind the account.

Investment claims require verification of the firm, registration status, custody of funds and withdrawal terms through independent sources. Never send money because a video promises guaranteed returns, uses a celebrity’s apparent endorsement or creates a countdown. Romance contacts who avoid an independently verified meeting while requesting money, cryptocurrency or account access should be treated as untrusted, regardless of how much video or audio they provide.

Warning signs that deserve a pause

AI can remove obvious errors, so concentrate on the behavior of the request. Several warning signs together are especially important:

  • Urgency: You are told that payment, a login or a decision must happen immediately.
  • Secrecy: The caller says not to tell family, coworkers, the bank or authorities.
  • Irreversible payment: The request involves gift cards, cryptocurrency, a wire transfer or another method that is difficult to recover.
  • Channel switching: A contact pushes you from a known service to an unfamiliar app, number, website or private chat.
  • Unexpected authority: The person claims to be an executive, police officer, bank employee or government agent but refuses normal verification.
  • Credential pressure: You are asked for a password, one-time code, recovery phrase, remote access or identity document.
  • Too-good-to-be-true opportunity: An investment, job, prize or romance suddenly requires an upfront payment.

Visual or audio oddities can prompt a closer look. The FBI mentions irregular facial details, unrealistic accessories or shadows and movement that does not match the voice. These are clues, not a pass/fail test. A clean-looking call can be fraudulent, and a glitchy call can come from a genuine person.

How to verify an urgent message or call

  1. Stop the requested action. Do not click, reply with a code, install software or move money while the contact is active. Tell the person you will verify independently.
  2. End the session. Hang up, close the chat or stop replying. Do not trust a callback number, QR code, link or email address supplied in the suspicious message.
  3. Choose a known route. Call a saved family number; use the number printed on a bank card or statement; type the organization’s address yourself; or contact a coworker through the company directory.
  4. Confirm the exact request. Ask whether the person really sent the message and what they want. For a business transfer, use the normal approval and call-back procedure. For a family emergency, use the pre-agreed code phrase or an independent question.
  5. Check with another person when the stakes are high. A second family member, finance approver or security contact can interrupt an isolated decision.
  6. Only then decide. Legitimate organizations can explain a request through their normal channel. If the claim cannot survive independent verification, do not pay, disclose information or follow the link.

Scenario-specific checks

If someone says a relative is in trouble

  • Call the relative on a number you already have, even if the incoming voice sounded exact.
  • Contact another relative or the relevant hospital, school or police department through a number found independently.
  • Use your family code phrase if one exists.
  • Refuse gift cards, cryptocurrency, wire transfers and payment-app transfers requested under secrecy.

If a bank or government agency calls

  • Do not provide a one-time passcode, password, full identity number or remote access.
  • End the call and initiate contact through the official app, a card or statement, or an independently located government website.
  • Remember that a real representative can document the issue in your account; you do not need to obey an unexpected caller’s deadline.

If an executive or supplier requests a transfer

  • Follow the company’s written payment policy and dual-control requirements.
  • Confirm changed bank details using a previously trusted phone number or an in-person contact.
  • Ask the finance or security team to review unusual language, timing or a new beneficiary.

If an online romantic contact or investment promoter asks for money

  • Do not send assets to someone known only through calls, messages, images or video.
  • Verify the person and business independently; a video call is not identity proof.
  • Be especially cautious of guaranteed returns, withdrawal fees, emergency travel costs or requests to keep the relationship secret.

What to do if you already paid or shared information

Act quickly, but do not let the scammer set the pace. Contact the bank, card issuer, payment service or cryptocurrency exchange through its official support channel and ask what reversal, recall or account-freezing options exist. If you disclosed a password, change it from a trusted device and change it anywhere else you reused it. Ask the provider whether additional account monitoring or a new credential is needed.

Preserve the evidence: messages, email headers, phone numbers, usernames, wallet addresses, receipts, transaction IDs, dates and screenshots. Do not continue negotiating with the scammer or send a fee to recover money. Report the incident to the appropriate official authority. The FBI’s Internet Crime Complaint Center asks complainants to include contact details, communication methods, transaction information and a description of the interaction. Prompt reporting can also help service providers identify connected accounts.

Reduce the material scammers can exploit

Privacy measures cannot guarantee safety, but they can reduce the source material available for cloning and impersonation.

  • Review who can see public posts, follower lists, photographs, videos and voice recordings.
  • Remove unnecessary public details about relatives, travel plans, workplaces, birthdays and daily routines.
  • Use strong, unique passwords and multi-factor authentication on email, social and financial accounts.
  • Agree with family members on a code phrase and a plan for emergency calls.
  • Tell relatives and coworkers that an urgent payment request will always be verified out of band.
  • Keep important contacts in your address book so you are not searching for a number during a crisis.

Limiting public audio and images makes cloning harder, but it cannot prevent every attempt. Scammers may use material posted by someone else or obtain information through data leaks.

Can detection tools reliably identify an AI scam?

No single detector can authenticate every message, image, voice or video across all services. The FTC’s April 2024 analysis, Approaches to Address AI-enabled Voice Cloning, discusses intervention before a call, during a call and after an event, but notes that detection signals may become harder to identify as cloning improves. Its conclusion is direct: “there’s no silver bullet to prevent the harms posed by voice cloning.”

That limitation applies to human inspection as well. A detector may produce a false positive on genuine media or miss a new synthetic technique. Use technical warnings as an additional reason to investigate, never as permission to trust a high-value request. Authentication through a known channel is stronger because it checks the relationship and the transaction, not merely the pixels or audio waveform.

How to interpret the latest fraud numbers

Official statistics measure different things and should not be combined as though they describe one AI-fraud total.

Figure What it measures What it does not establish
More than $12.5 billion in consumer-reported fraud losses in 2024 Overall fraud losses reported to the Federal Trade Commission, published in March 2025 It is not an estimate of losses caused by AI.
More than 9,000 AI-related complaints in the first seven months of 2025 Complaints recorded by the FBI Internet Crime Complaint Center, cited in December 2025 guidance It is not a verified count of unique victims or a complete measure of all AI-related fraud.
$470 million in reported losses from scams that started with text messages in 2024 Overall text-message scam losses reported to the FTC, published in April 2025 It is not an AI-specific loss figure.

Complaint totals, consumer-reported losses and text-scam estimates answer different questions. The figures show why reporting matters, but they do not prove that AI caused any particular share of general fraud losses.

Compare the scam format, not the apparent realism

Impersonated identity Typical medium Pressure tactic Requested action Independent verification
Family member Cloned voice, text or video Emergency, urgency and secrecy Payment or sensitive information Call a saved number, use a family code phrase and contact another relative.
Executive or supplier Email, chat, voice or video Authority, deadline and confidentiality Wire transfer, changed bank details or internal data Use the established approval process and a separate known channel.
Bank or government agency Call, text, email or synthetic video Account threat, legal consequence or immediate action Credentials, one-time code, remote access or transfer Start contact through a card, statement, official app or independently found website.
Romantic contact Profile images, chat, voice or video Affection, isolation and a personal crisis Money, cryptocurrency or identity documents Do not send assets; verify the identity and any claimed business independently.
Celebrity or investment promoter Generated image, video, website or chatbot Authority, exclusivity and guaranteed returns Deposit, login or link click Check the firm and offer through independent regulatory and contact information.

A short checklist to share with family and coworkers

  • AI can imitate a voice, face, writing style or document; familiarity is not proof.
  • Urgency plus secrecy is a reason to pause, not a reason to pay faster.
  • End the contact and use a number or website you already know is genuine.
  • Never disclose a one-time code or send gift cards, cryptocurrency or a wire transfer because of an unexpected call.
  • Use a family code phrase and follow dual approval for unusual business payments.
  • Limit public voice and image material where practical.
  • If money or account information was sent, contact the provider immediately, preserve evidence and report the incident.
