Satellites can detect some dense, floating litter patches, but they do not identify or count all the plastic in the ocean. A 2024 Mediterranean study used images from the multispectral Sentinel-2 satellites to map narrow, temporary litter windrows—not a dedicated hyperspectral satellite that routinely surveys global plastic.
Can satellites really see plastic in the ocean?
Yes, under the right conditions. Satellites can pick out some dense accumulations of floating litter at the sea surface. Ordinary, scattered plastic is often too sparse to register reliably, and material below the immediate surface is not fully represented in a surface image.

The strongest demonstration so far in this evidence is a 2024 proof of concept published in Nature Communications. Researchers analysed 300,000 Sentinel-2 images covering the Mediterranean and tracked 14,374 detected and supervised litter windrows over 75 months, from July 2015 through September 2021. A windrow is a transient line or patch of material gathered by surface convergence; it is a useful monitoring signal, not a census of marine plastic. Read the study.
How do satellites spot floating plastic?
Satellite instruments record sunlight reflected from the ocean in different parts of the spectrum. Image-processing methods can flag unusual surface features whose reflectance and shape are consistent with dense floating litter. The Mediterranean project examined the sea every three days using six years of Sentinel-2 imagery at 10-metre spatial resolution, according to the European Space Agency (ESA). ESA says existing satellites can detect dense patches at least tens of metres in area. ESA’s study overview.

Multispectral images are not the same as hyperspectral identification
Sentinel-2 is multispectral: it measures light in a set of defined bands. The 2024 demonstration used this existing instrument, which was not designed specifically to detect plastic. Hyperspectral sensors measure many narrower, more closely spaced bands, offering finer spectral detail that may help distinguish materials. ESA discussed the future potential of hyperspectral observation in 2023; that account does not establish a current operational satellite providing routine global plastic detection. ESA on hyper-to-multispectral detection.
Can satellite images tell plastic from seaweed?
Not reliably in every case. The Sentinel-2 detections required high plastic surface coverage, but a signal could also include seaweed, driftwood or seafoam. The study therefore treated detected windrows as litter aggregations with varying plastic fractions, not confirmed plastic-only objects. Andrés Cózar, a University of Cádiz project co-director, put the limitation plainly: “There is still room for improvement. The sensor used in our proof was not designed to detect plastic.”

That distinction matters when interpreting a map: a flagged patch indicates a likely accumulation worth investigating, not a lab-confirmed quantity of plastic. Field observations can help verify what is present; satellite coverage and on-site confirmation answer different questions.

The 2024 study mapped litter windrows across the Mediterranean. Its authors found that this proxy was mainly associated with recent inputs from land-based litter sources. Rainfall and runoff can carry litter toward the sea, while winds and surface currents help gather and transport floating material. These patterns can help researchers identify hotspots and changes over time, but a detected patch does not by itself identify a particular source or prove how much plastic entered the ocean.

What could a dedicated plastic-monitoring sensor add?
The paper describes a proposed Earth-observation concept with tailored near-infrared and shortwave-infrared bands. Its suggested optimal mission is a two-satellite constellation with 10-metre pixels, designed to achieve global coverage with revisit times of a few days. This is a proposed mission design, not a deployed operational system or the instrument used in the Sentinel-2 proof of concept. The paper explains the proposed sensor concept.
Better spectral detail would not solve every monitoring problem. ESA has highlighted the need for open data, improved spatial and spectral resolution, realistic detection targets and better observation of litter beneath the immediate surface. A significant fraction of plastic may float in the first few metres underwater, beyond what a surface-only view can fully capture. ESA’s account of remaining detection challenges.

Can satellite maps help clean up ocean plastic?
They may help direct attention to where litter accumulates, but a satellite alert is not by itself a cleanup instruction. A patch can move, disperse or contain a mixture of materials, so useful decisions need timely observations and additional information about location, composition and movement.

ESA’s PLESS demonstration combined satellite imagery with ground-truth observations and ocean-circulation models. Its described services included ongoing detection for selected areas, model-assisted tracking and requests to identify areas prone to accumulation. ESA lists the pilot as having reached final review and gives an update date of 15 April 2025; this describes a demonstration service, not a consumer subscription. ESA’s PLESS DEMO page.

What satellite plastic maps can—and cannot—tell us
| Method or capability | What it can contribute | Important limit |
|---|---|---|
| Sentinel-2 multispectral imagery | Maps some dense, surface-floating litter windrows; the Mediterranean proof of concept used 10-metre imagery and observations every three days. | Requires high surface coverage; signals may include non-plastic floating material and do not count all ocean plastic. |
| Proposed dedicated sensor | Tailored near-infrared and shortwave-infrared bands could improve material detection; the paper proposes two satellites with 10-metre pixels and global coverage revisited every few days. | A mission concept, not the operational system used in the study. |
| Field observations | Can check what material is present at a sampled location. | Do not provide the same broad geographic view as satellite monitoring; they complement rather than replace it. |
