The reported examples concern saree entrepreneurs and founders, not people whose celebrity status is established in the coverage. Sangeetha Rajesh is profiled as a saree entrepreneur, while The Indian Express covers sellers including Satarupa Dey and Sayali Rajadhyaksha. The Indian Institute of Management Ahmedabad’s Suta case examines founder-led branding and asks whether the business can grow when its founders step back from the spotlight. The New Indian Express profile, The Indian Express report, and IIMA’s public case summary support an entrepreneur-led framing.

What sellers show and do on video
Demonstrate the drape and details
A saree is difficult to assess from a single product image. Sayali Rajadhyaksha described making simple, mostly unedited videos in which she roughly draped each saree and talked through it in detail. Showing the garment on a person gives viewers more context for its fall and appearance than a static photograph alone.
Talk like a person, not an advertisement
The Indian Express reported that Dey and Rajadhyaksha avoided scripts to keep their videos personal. Dey said, “I want my customers to feel like they are talking to a friend.” That conversational approach can make questions feel welcome, though it is not a guarantee of sales.

Explain the makers and the craft
Rajesh has used video to document artisans and explain their work, including streams from weaving clusters where weavers joined to answer customer questions. This connects a product demonstration with information about how a textile is made and who makes it.
Answer viewers directly and refine production gradually
Live sessions let sellers respond to prospective buyers as questions arise; IIMA’s Suta case summary also notes the founders’ personal responses to customer comments. Rajadhyaksha said her team improved lighting and audio while continuing to film on an iPhone. The example suggests that clearer sound and light can be pursued without treating elaborate production as a prerequisite.

How social video can help a saree business
- More demonstrative browsing: A seller can show a drape, color, and details while explaining the item.
- Immediate interaction: Viewers can ask questions during a stream and hear an answer in the same session.
- Discovery beyond the local area: Dey told The Indian Express that her customers extended to Australia, Dubai, and the UK. That is her reported experience, not a typical reach figure for sellers.
- A way to share textile stories: Video can introduce the people and processes behind a saree, rather than presenting the garment alone.
Meta reported in June 2025 on a Meta-commissioned GWI retail study that nearly 8 in 10 Indian shoppers discover products through social media, with 96% of those discoveries on Meta platforms. The same study said 3 in 10 viewers had purchased products featured in brand videos. These are broad Indian retail and video-commerce findings—not saree-specific results or live-stream conversion rates. Meta executive Meghna Apparao characterized shoppers as “social-first, mobile-first, and video-first”; that is her statement, not an independent finding.
What the reported sales figures do—and do not—show
The New Indian Express profile reports Rajesh’s figures of more than 10 lakh sarees sold over the business’s history, a single-day event sale of 15,000 sarees, and live sessions selling up to 1,000 sarees a day. These are figures attributed to Rajesh and the profile, not independently audited industry results. They illustrate what one business reports achieving; they should not be treated as a forecast for a new seller.

The Indian Express also reported that a 2021 Facebook survey found Facebook Live video use increased by 200% during the pandemic and that about 52% of online brand discovery occurred in public social feeds. Those figures are historical, survey-based claims reported in 2022, not current market measurements. None of these statistics establishes that live video causes a particular level of sales or performs better than prerecorded video, marketplaces, or physical retail.
Costs and risks to plan for
Moderation and reputation
The Indian Express described trolling and abusive comments during live sessions, along with fake negative reviews. A seller who goes live should be prepared to moderate comments and handle reputational issues, not just present products.

Time and explanation
Textile history and product detail can be hard to compress into short videos. A live stream also requires someone to present and respond in real time. The cited profiles do not quantify the time or staffing required, so sellers should assess those demands against their own capacity rather than assume video is a low-effort channel.
Dependence on the founder
A founder’s personal presence may help a brand feel accessible, but it can become a strategic constraint if customers expect that person to appear in every campaign. IIMA’s Suta case explicitly raises the question of whether the brand can continue to grow if other models are used in social media campaigns. It frames this as a scaling question, not proof that founder-led branding has already failed.

A practical way to plan a saree live
- Choose a small group of sarees to present. Have each item ready to drape and describe rather than relying on a fast-moving catalogue.
- Show the garment on a person. Give viewers a useful view of its fall and appearance, then bring attention to details they may not be able to assess from a still image.
- Explain what is known about its craft or origin. If makers or artisans are part of the story, describe their work accurately and, where appropriate, invite them to answer questions.
- Leave room for buyer questions. Treat comments as part of the presentation, not as interruptions to a fixed script.
- Improve sound and lighting as needed. Clear presentation matters, but the reported seller example does not suggest that professional equipment is essential.
- Prepare to moderate the session. Decide how comments will be handled so the person presenting can focus on the product and customers.
- Review what the session tells you. Use viewer questions and responses to refine future presentations, while avoiding assumptions that views or reach automatically translate into orders.
What the evidence supports
The seller profiles describe a plausible model: use video to make sarees easier to inspect, make the seller and craft story more personal, and answer questions directly. They are examples, not a controlled comparison of sales channels. The broad retail statistics provide context for social discovery and video commerce, but they do not establish a saree-specific benchmark or guarantee that a particular business will benefit.
