Workday’s earlier interface combined configurable global navigation, role-based hubs, Workday Everywhere, and natural-language search to help users locate records, reports, and tasks. Sana adds a conversational front door that can interpret a request, return cited answers and deep links, and—through agents—help carry out permitted work.
The transition has a clear timeline. Workday completed its Sana acquisition on November 4, 2025, then announced Sana from Workday as available worldwide on March 17, 2026. The launch positioned Sana as a unified conversational interface, while current Sana Workspace documentation still describes both search-as-you-type navigation and conversational search. The practical difference is therefore less “old search versus no search” and more “finding a destination” versus “asking for an answer or an outcome.”

What Workday users already had before Sana
Workday’s AI-ready user-experience materials describe several ways to reach information and work without Sana. A search-first homepage puts discovery at the center of the landing experience. Configurable global navigation lets an organization expose the areas, actions, or destinations most relevant to its workforce. Role-based hubs organize content around a person’s job and responsibilities, while Workday Everywhere brings selected Workday information into places employees already work. Workday also described natural-language search as a way to simplify results and make information easier to find.

Navigation was destination-oriented
In the traditional model, the user generally starts with a menu, hub, or search field and moves toward a known destination: a report, a worker profile, a business process, or a task. Natural-language queries can make that route easier, but the result is still primarily a list of records, links, or actions that the user opens and completes.

Natural-language search was not introduced by Sana
It is inaccurate to describe Sana as the first natural-language capability in Workday. Workday had already presented natural-language search as part of its modern experience. Sana changes the center of gravity by combining conversational interaction with context, agent skills, and orchestration. That is a broader interaction model than adding a plain-language query box to an existing results page.
What Sana is, and when it arrived
Workday completed its acquisition of Sana on November 4, 2025. In that announcement, Workday said it would combine Sana’s AI-powered search, agents, and learning with Workday data and context. Workday president of product and technology Gerrit Kazmaier described the goal as creating “a single, intelligent interface” that connects the systems, data, and actions employees rely on.
On March 17, 2026, Workday announced Sana from Workday as available to customers worldwide. The launch described Sana for Workday as a new unified conversational AI interface replacing traditional menus and navigation. That wording describes the intended front-door experience; it should not be read as confirmation that every tenant has lost every legacy navigation path. Sana Workspace documentation continues to describe navigational and conversational search, and the capabilities available to an individual depend on tenant configuration, role permissions, and product tier.
The central difference: locating something versus asking for an outcome
| Comparison point | Workday’s existing interface and search | Sana from Workday |
|---|---|---|
| Primary interaction | Menus, configurable global navigation, role-based hubs, and search results guide the user to a destination. | A conversational request is interpreted as a question, a discovery task, or a request for help completing work. |
| Search behavior | Search helps locate Workday information, people, reports, and tasks; Workday also documented natural-language search. | Sana Workspace offers search-as-you-type navigation plus conversational search that can refine a query and return clickable deep links. |
| Typical output | A result page, record, report, or task that the user opens and works through. | An answer, cited response, recommendation, deep link, or agent-assisted action, depending on the request and permissions. |
| Action scope | The user navigates to the relevant Workday process and performs the available steps. | The Self-Service Agent can perform supported read/write actions and help complete common tasks under Workday’s controls. |
| Information boundary | Primarily Workday records and experiences exposed to the tenant and the user’s role. | Sana Core covers Workday HCM and Financials plus Sana Workspace; Sana Enterprise adds supported external connectors and orchestrations. |
| Governance | Existing role and security settings govern what a person can see and do. | Workday documents role and permission mirroring, shared tenant single sign-on, approvals, and administrator control over supported connectors. |
The table describes product positioning and documented behavior, not a laboratory comparison. Public Workday materials do not establish that Sana is categorically faster, more accurate, or more productive than the earlier interface.
How search works inside Sana Workspace
Sana does not replace search with one undifferentiated chat box. Workday’s Sana Workspace documentation describes two distinct patterns, and both Sana Core and Sana Enterprise include them.
Rank #2
Search-as-you-type navigation
As a user types in the main chat dropdown, Sana can surface links to Workday people, reports, and tasks. This is the closest analogue to conventional navigation: the user is looking for a known object or destination, and Sana helps locate it without manually traversing menus.
Conversational search
Conversational search lets a person refine a request in natural language. Sana can return clickable deep links in the chat response, so the conversation can lead directly to the relevant Workday page. A request such as “What’s the current contract value of Acme Inc.?” is an example of asking for an answer rather than merely searching for a contract record. The response and the links available still depend on the user’s authorization and the data exposed to that tenant.
Why the distinction matters
Search-as-you-type is useful when the destination is known. Conversational search is more useful when the user knows the question but not the report, field, or process that contains the answer. Neither pattern guarantees that Sana can complete the underlying transaction; finding a page and executing a write action are separate capabilities.
From an answer to an action
Workday positions Sana as able to answer questions, recommend next steps, and help complete tasks through agents. The important change is the potential handoff from information retrieval to controlled execution. Instead of finding a time-off page and then interpreting the fields alone, an employee might ask, “How many vacation days do I have left?” Sana can answer when the relevant balance is available to that employee, and an enabled agent may support a related self-service action.
That does not mean every conversational request becomes an autonomous workflow. Actions remain bounded by the skills Workday supports, the person’s role, required approvals, and the tenant’s configuration. A conversational answer can also end with a deep link when a human must review details or complete a step in the normal Workday process.
Sana Core and Sana Enterprise
Workday’s documentation separates Sana into two principal tiers. The distinction is mainly about scope: where Sana can retrieve context and orchestrate work.

The March 17, 2026 launch announcement listed Sana Enterprise connectors for Box, Confluence, Gmail, Google Calendar, Google Contacts, Google Drive, Google Tasks, Jira, Linear, Microsoft Outlook Calendar, Microsoft Outlook Email, Miro, Notion, Salesforce, ServiceNow, SharePoint, and Slack, with more planned. That list is tied to the dated announcement and can change. Connector support should be checked against the customer’s tenant before treating any application as available.
Do not confuse Sana with the Sana Self-Service Agent
Sana is the conversational interface and broader AI experience. The Sana Self-Service Agent is a Workday-built capability that Sana can use to answer employee and manager HR questions and support common self-service tasks. Workday said the agent launched with more than 300 skills across areas including pay, time, and absence.
The 300-plus figure is a launch-time count reported by Workday, not a score for accuracy, completion rate, or business outcomes. It also does not mean every customer has identical skills enabled. The agent’s actual behavior is constrained by the tenant’s configuration, the user’s permissions, and any approval rules attached to a process.
Permissions, approvals, and administration
Role and permission mirroring
Workday documents Sana as mirroring role and permission settings. A conversation should not become a bypass around Workday security: the person receives only the data and actions their tenant permits. This is especially important when a natural-language question could expose compensation, absence, financial, or personal information.

Approvals still apply
Where a Workday process requires manager or other approval, conversational access does not remove that control. Sana may prepare or initiate a supported action, while the configured approval chain determines whether it can be completed.
Shared single sign-on
Sana documentation describes single sign-on shared with the Workday tenant. That reduces the need for a separate identity flow, but an organization still needs to verify its own identity configuration and access policies.
Connector administration
Sana Enterprise connectors are not automatically a license to read every external system. Workday says administrators can enable supported connectors. The administrator must therefore confirm which connector is enabled, what content it can reach, which identities it uses, and what actions or orchestrations are allowed.

Workday’s launch language presents Sana as replacing traditional menus and navigation, but the fuller product picture is consolidation rather than a total deletion of older affordances. Current documentation still describes search-as-you-type links to people, reports, and tasks, as well as conversational deep links. Those patterns preserve a route to a specific destination even when the user starts in chat.

For an employee, the visible change may be substantial: the homepage can feel like a conversation instead of a grid of applications. For an administrator, the change is more incremental. Existing role design, business processes, approvals, and data permissions remain important because Sana operates within them rather than replacing them.

Practical scenarios
Finding a report
With the older experience, a user might open global navigation, choose a reporting area, and search for the report name. In Sana Workspace, typing the report name into the chat dropdown can surface a direct link. If the user is unsure which report answers the question, conversational search can refine the request and return a relevant deep link.
Checking an employee balance
The literal question “How many vacation days do I have left?” illustrates the conversational model. Sana can answer only from data the employee is authorized to see. If the user then needs to request time away, the Self-Service Agent may support that task when the skill is enabled and the process does not require an additional approval step.
Working across systems
A Sana Enterprise user could ask for information that spans Workday and an enabled external connector, then receive an answer or an orchestrated next step. The cross-application behavior depends on the specific connector, its administration, and the user’s rights in each system; Enterprise should not be treated as universal access to every application.

Availability and commercial qualification
Workday’s March 17, 2026 announcement said Sana for Workday and the Sana Self-Service Agent were available through Workday Flex Credits with no extra license or separate paywall. That is the commercial language of that dated announcement, not a permanent guarantee that every current package, region, or Enterprise capability is identical. Customers should confirm present entitlements, credit consumption, connector availability, and contract terms with Workday.
The announcement said Sana was available to customers worldwide at launch. “Worldwide” describes the launch statement; it does not remove the need to check local tenant readiness, enabled features, identity setup, or regulatory requirements.
What the public comparison does not prove
- No independent benchmark establishes Sana’s accuracy against Workday’s prior search or navigation.
- No controlled comparison establishes response-time, adoption, or productivity gains.
- The 300-plus Self-Service Agent skills count is a vendor-reported launch figure, not an outcome measure.
- Connector lists and packaging can change after the March 2026 announcement.
- A feature described in product documentation may still require tenant enablement, a supported role, an approval path, or a particular contract.
Those limits matter when evaluating a rollout. The defensible conclusion is that Sana changes how users ask for information and work, while Workday’s existing navigation and search concepts remain visible inside the documented Sana Workspace experience.
