Short answer: Samsung’s Galaxy AI feature, called Notification highlights, combines two controls: it can rank important alerts and summarize conversational notifications. Google’s comparable AI notification summaries are documented for eligible Pixel phones, not for every Android device. Android 16’s Notification Organizer is a separate sorting and silencing tool, not a message-summary feature.
Which experience you get depends on the exact phone, software version, language, region, app, battery state and whether the screen is off. Samsung and Google also use different controls and failure conditions, so “Android summaries” is not one universal feature.

- Prioritize notifications moves important alerts higher in the notification panel.
They are separately configurable. Turning on prioritization does not automatically mean every conversation will be summarized, and disabling summaries does not necessarily disable prioritization. Samsung says prioritization analyzes user information and notification content, with the data used for that prioritization processed on the device. Samsung also warns that generated summaries may not always be accurate.

Google Pixel: AI notification summaries
Google’s current Pixel Help documentation describes AI summaries for unread messages in notifications. It names popular messaging notifications, including Google Messages, Android Messages and WhatsApp, and describes support for longer messages and group-chat notifications. The feature is documented for Pixel 9 and later, excluding A-series models, with English and Japanese support. The phone’s primary system language must be English or Japanese.
Pixel summaries are an opt-in setting and can be disabled for individual apps. Google does not describe this help-page feature as a capability available to every Android phone. Other manufacturers may implement their own notification tools, but their eligibility and behavior must be checked separately.
Android 16: Notification Organizer
Android 16 also includes Notification Organizer, which Google describes separately from AI summaries. Organizer groups and silences selected lower-priority alerts, with categories such as Promotions and news, and Social and suggested content. It is intended to reduce notification clutter; it does not condense the text of a conversation into an AI-generated synopsis.

Google’s Android 16 announcements also discuss live updates from compatible apps and grouped notifications. Live updates, grouping, Organizer and AI message summaries solve different problems. A handset may support one, several or none of them depending on the manufacturer’s software and the phone model.

The table shows why a blanket “Samsung versus Android” winner would be misleading. Samsung’s implementation is tied to Galaxy software and includes a separate ranking function; Google’s documented implementation is tied to specific Pixel generations and languages.
Which phones can use the features?
Samsung Galaxy eligibility
Samsung’s U.S. troubleshooting material describes Notification highlights on devices running One UI 8.5 or later, including the Galaxy S26 series and newer models. Samsung Canada’s S26 guide also documents the feature on the Galaxy S26 series. Those documents are regional and can be updated, so they should not be treated as a single worldwide device list.

On a Galaxy phone, check the exact model, One UI version and current notification settings rather than assuming that an older or non-U.S. model has the same controls. Samsung’s supported-app and language lists may also change. A phone can have a compatible One UI release but still lack a summary for a particular app or language.

Google Pixel eligibility
Google’s Pixel Help page lists Pixel 9 and later, excluding A-series phones, for AI notification summaries. It lists English and Japanese and requires the primary system language to be set to one of them. A Pixel outside those conditions may still have ordinary notification grouping or other Android notification features, but not the documented AI summary function.
Android phones outside Pixel
“Android notification summaries” should therefore be read as shorthand for a device-specific implementation. Android is the operating-system platform; manufacturers can add, rename or omit features. Android 16 announcements do not guarantee that every Android 16 handset exposes Pixel’s summary controls. Confirm support in the manufacturer’s documentation and in the phone’s Settings app.
How to turn on or manage Samsung summaries
Samsung’s documentation confirms per-app controls, but menu labels can vary with the Galaxy model, region and One UI release. Use the following method to avoid changing the wrong notification feature.
- Open Settings on the Galaxy phone.
- Use Settings search for Notification highlights. If the result is not present, check the phone’s One UI version and Samsung’s support page for the exact model.
- Open the Notification highlights controls and identify Summarize notifications separately from Prioritize notifications.
- Enable summaries, then open the per-app list and turn the function on only for messaging apps whose notifications you want processed.
- If you want ranking without generated text, leave prioritization enabled and summaries disabled, or make the reverse choice.
- Lock the screen and allow time for a qualifying conversation notification to arrive. Samsung’s troubleshooting guidance says summaries are generated with the screen off, at least 30% battery and Power saving off.
If the setting is missing, do not infer that the phone is defective. The feature may require a newer One UI release, may not be offered for that regional firmware, or may not support the app or language involved.

- Open Settings.
- Tap Notifications.
- Tap Notification summaries.
- Turn summaries on or off with the main control.
- Use the app controls on the same screen to exclude individual messaging apps when you want their full notifications left untouched.
Google’s Pixel documentation describes summaries as off by default. After enabling them, set the phone’s primary system language to English or Japanese if it is not already one of those languages. A secondary language used inside a message does not change the primary-language requirement.

When a summary appears—and when it does not
Samsung timing and battery conditions
Samsung says a summary uses conversational notification history from the past 24 hours, so it is not limited to the newest single message. Its troubleshooting guidance adds operational conditions: the screen must be off, the device must have at least 30% charge and Power saving must be disabled. Samsung also refers to minimum notification-length and waiting-period requirements without presenting one universal value in the cited guidance.
Consequently, testing while actively reading the phone, while charging in Power saving mode or immediately after a very short message can produce no summary even when the feature is enabled. Low battery and Power saving are explicit Samsung caveats.
Pixel language and content conditions
Google says a summary might not be generated for short notifications. Mixed-language text or emoji can prevent the system from detecting a supported language, and no summary may appear while you are actively using the phone. Google says the screen needs to be off for a moment before processing occurs.

A long group-chat notification in a supported language is a better candidate than a one-word alert, but the original conversation remains the authoritative source.
What to do when summaries are missing
Galaxy checklist
- Confirm that the exact Galaxy model and One UI version support Notification highlights.
- Check that Summarize notifications is enabled for the specific app; prioritization alone is not enough.
- Turn off Power saving and wait until the battery is at least 30%.
- Lock the screen and allow the waiting period described by Samsung’s troubleshooting guidance.
- Try a longer conversational notification. Samsung documents minimum notification-length conditions.
- Verify that the app and language appear on Samsung’s current supported lists.
- If the summary appears wrong, open the original conversation before acting; Samsung warns that summaries may not always be accurate.
Pixel checklist
- Confirm the phone is a Pixel 9 or later and not an A-series model.
- Go to Settings > Notifications > Notification summaries and verify that the main switch is on.
- Remove the messaging app from the exclusion list.
- Set the primary system language to English or Japanese.
- Lock the screen briefly instead of waiting while actively using the phone.
- Try a longer, single-language message without emoji-heavy or mixed-language text.
Do not confuse missing summaries with missing organization
If Android groups or silences promotions and social alerts but does not summarize a chat, that behavior may be Notification Organizer working as designed. Organizer is not a fallback summary engine. Likewise, ordinary notification grouping can combine alerts without producing an AI-written description.
Accuracy, privacy and practical risk
Accuracy
Samsung’s own support wording is direct: “Summaries may not always be accurate.” A generated synopsis can omit context, misunderstand a speaker’s intent or make a short exchange appear more definitive than it is. Google’s cited support page documents when summaries may not be generated but does not publish a comparative accuracy rate for Pixel versus Galaxy.

Neither platform should replace opening the full conversation for medical, financial, security, workplace or other consequential decisions. Treat the summary as a scan-friendly prompt, then verify details in the source app.

Processing and data controls
Samsung states that the data used for notification prioritization is processed on the device. That statement applies to prioritization; it should not be expanded into an unsupported claim about every summarization step. Samsung also provides per-app switches, allowing a user to limit which apps participate.
Pixel users can disable summaries globally or exclude individual apps. The practical privacy choice is to leave sensitive messaging apps excluded and enable summaries only where the convenience outweighs the extra processing of notification text.

Choose Samsung’s approach when ranking matters as much as summarizing
A Galaxy owner who wants urgent alerts moved higher and selected conversations condensed may prefer Notification highlights because both controls are available in one feature area and can be managed per app. The controls remain independent, so you can use prioritization without exposing every conversation to summaries.
Choose Pixel summaries when you want a focused message-only control
On an eligible Pixel, Google’s setting is straightforward: enable summaries under Notifications and exclude apps as needed. It is a good fit for users who primarily want unread-message condensation and do not want that function conflated with notification ranking.
Use Organizer when the real problem is alert volume
If the issue is promotional or social clutter rather than long conversations, Notification Organizer may be the relevant Android 16 tool. It groups and silences selected lower-priority categories; it does not answer “what did the group chat say?”

Common questions answered before you enable the feature
Does a Galaxy phone summarize text notifications?
It can summarize supported conversational notifications when the model, One UI release, app, language and operating conditions qualify. Samsung describes a 24-hour notification-history window and separate per-app controls.
Does Android summarize group chats?
Google describes longer messages and group-chat notifications for AI summaries on eligible Pixel phones. That statement does not establish the same behavior on every Android manufacturer’s handset.
Are Pixel summaries available on every Pixel?
No. Google’s current help guidance specifies Pixel 9 and later, excluding A-series models, with English or Japanese as the primary system language.
Can I turn summaries off?

Samsung Galaxy AI and Google Pixel AI summaries are similar in purpose but not interchangeable. Samsung’s Notification highlights pairs conversation summaries with separately controlled prioritization and uses a 24-hour notification-history window. Google’s documented AI summaries are a Pixel-specific feature for Pixel 9 and later excluding A-series, with English and Japanese support. Android 16’s Notification Organizer manages alert categories rather than summarizing messages.
Before comparing output quality, verify the exact phone and software. No published comparative accuracy test establishes that Galaxy or Pixel is better, and both systems can omit or misstate information. Enable the narrowest per-app scope that fits your needs, keep the screen-off and language requirements in mind, and open the original conversation whenever the details matter.
