Your annual salary alone cannot tell you exactly how much will land in your account: the amount depends on pay frequency, work location, Form W-4 details, benefit choices, and any other deductions.
Why your paycheck is smaller than your salary
Salary is usually quoted as an annual gross amount, but payroll pays it in installments. A practical model for each paycheck is:

Gross wages for the pay period − tax withholding − employee benefit contributions − other deductions = net pay.
The U.S. Department of Labor’s Savings Fitness guide uses a similar budget framework, subtracting items such as taxes, retirement contributions, and health coverage before arriving at net take-home pay. To understand a deposit, start with the gross wages for that specific pay period, not just the annual salary.

Which taxes are withheld from a paycheck?
Federal income-tax withholding
Federal income-tax withholding is a prepayment toward your federal income-tax bill, not the final calculation of that bill. The amount withheld from regular wages depends on your earnings, pay period, and information on Form W-4. The form can account for filing status, multiple jobs, credits, other income, deductions, and any extra amount you request withheld. A W-4 change can alter the size of each deposit without changing your gross salary. See the IRS’s Publication 505 (2026) for withholding guidance.
The IRS describes federal income tax as pay-as-you-go. If too little is withheld, you may owe tax or a penalty; if too much is withheld, you generally wait until a refund to use that money. The IRS explains this in its Tax withholding guidance.

Social Security and Medicare
Social Security and Medicare are payroll taxes, separate from federal income-tax withholding. Form W-4 does not set their rates. For tax year 2026, the IRS lists the following employee-side figures:

| Payroll tax | Employee withholding for 2026 | How the limit works |
|---|---|---|
| Social Security | 6.2% of covered wages | Withholding applies up to the $184,500 wage base; it stops on covered wages above that annual limit. |
| Medicare | 1.45% of wages | No wage base limit. |
| Additional Medicare Tax | 0.9% withholding | An employer begins withholding after it pays an employee more than $200,000 in wages during a calendar year, without regard to filing status. Final liability can depend on the employee’s filing circumstances. |
These are IRS figures for 2026 and can change in later tax years. Check the IRS Social Security and Medicare tax guidance for current rates and thresholds.

State, local, and other deductions
State and local income-tax withholding may also reduce your deposit; what applies depends on where you work and live and on local rules. The IRS Tax Withholding Estimator FAQs distinguish federal withholding from state and local taxes, Social Security, and Medicare. A federal withholding estimate is therefore not a complete estimate of take-home pay.
Other paycheck deductions may include court-ordered payments or items you authorized, depending on your circumstances and applicable law. Their treatment varies, so check your pay statement and ask payroll or the relevant authority about a deduction you do not recognize.

How benefit choices affect the deposit
Health-plan premiums
If you enroll in employer-sponsored health coverage, your share of the premium may be deducted from pay. The amount depends on the plan and coverage tier; the U.S. Department of Labor advises workers to find out both the employer’s contribution and their own cost. Its health plans and benefits guide explains the role of employer contributions. Do not assume every insurance premium is treated the same way for tax purposes: whether a deduction is pre-tax depends on the plan arrangement and applicable rules.
Traditional and Roth 401(k) contributions
A traditional pre-tax 401(k) salary deferral reduces the cash wages paid to you and generally defers federal income tax on the contribution. A designated Roth 401(k) contribution is made after tax, so it does not receive that same current federal income-tax treatment. The Department of Labor describes the distinction in its 401(k) guide for small businesses.
The DOL’s Savings Fitness guide illustrates the effect with a simplified example: a $100 monthly retirement contribution reduces take-home pay by $85 when the assumed income-tax rate is 15%. That example is not a universal estimate; the actual effect depends on your tax rate, payroll treatment, and other circumstances.

An employer match can increase the value of compensation and retirement savings, but it is not an employee cash deduction from that paycheck. Check the plan’s match formula, eligibility rules, and vesting terms separately when evaluating total compensation.

- Start with gross wages for the pay period. Use the wages shown on the pay statement and note the pay frequency; annual salary by itself is not enough.
- Review federal income-tax withholding. Compare the amount with your current Form W-4 information and, if needed, use the IRS Tax Withholding Estimator according to its directions.
- Separate payroll taxes from federal income tax. Identify Social Security and Medicare as separate lines; they follow different rules from federal income-tax withholding.
- Add applicable state and local taxes. Include the taxes that apply to your location rather than treating a federal estimate as your net-pay figure.
- Check benefit deductions. List each election—such as health coverage or retirement contributions—and confirm whether it is treated as pre-tax or after-tax under your plan.
- Account for other deductions and compare the result with the deposit. If an item is unclear, ask your payroll office or consult current employer plan documents.
Consider reviewing withholding after a major change in income or life circumstances. For a full net-pay estimate, you need at least your location, gross wages and pay frequency, W-4 details, benefit elections, and other deductions. This overview explains paycheck mechanics; it is not individualized tax advice.
