Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Short answer: RYOBI says every 18V ONE+ battery is compatible with every RYOBI 18V ONE+ product. That platform promise covers the tool-and-battery connection; it does not mean an 18V pack can power a 40V tool. Chargers are a separate decision: PCG004 is a single-pack fast charger, PCG005 charges two 18V packs simultaneously, and PCG007 accepts either an 18V ONE+ or a 40V battery. Match the battery platform first, then check the charger model, battery chemistry and the exact charge-time claim.
What the ONE+ compatibility promise actually covers
ONE+ is RYOBI’s shared 18V battery platform. On its current PBP007 6Ah battery page, RYOBI states that 18V ONE+ batteries are compatible with any RYOBI 18V ONE+ product. In practical terms, an 18V ONE+ battery can be moved among RYOBI tools, outdoor equipment and other products that are explicitly labeled 18V ONE+.

The voltage and platform wording matters. The statement is not a blanket promise for every RYOBI battery, every charger or every voltage family. A 40V tool belongs to a different platform, even if a particular charger can charge both types of pack. Look for the “18V ONE+” marking on both the tool and battery before connecting them.

Will an old Ryobi 18V battery fit newer ONE+ tools?
If the pack is an 18V ONE+ battery, RYOBI’s stated platform rule says it fits 18V ONE+ products, including newer tools. The safest check is the label: confirm that the pack says 18V ONE+ and that the tool carries the same platform marking. Do not rely on color, age or the shape of a case alone.
Battery and charger history is more complicated than the tool interface. An older upgrade kit lists the P102 lithium-ion battery with a P117 dual-chemistry charger. That example shows why an unidentified legacy charger should not be assumed to support every current lithium-ion pack. Read the model number printed on the charger and consult its manual before charging an old or replacement battery.
- Known 18V ONE+ pack: use it with an 18V ONE+ tool according to RYOBI’s platform claim.
- Unknown or worn label: stop and identify the pack model before inserting it.
- Legacy charger: verify the charger’s chemistry and model-specific instructions rather than generalizing from current chargers.
What does 4Ah versus 6Ah change?
Ampere-hours (Ah) describe a battery’s capacity. A 6Ah pack stores more charge than a 4Ah pack of the same platform, so it is positioned for longer runtime. RYOBI describes its PBP007 6Ah battery as a higher-capacity option with longer runtime.
Windows Errors? Fix Them Before They Spread
Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstallCrashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?
Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteRuntime is not a fixed number because the tool and task determine how quickly energy is consumed. A high-load saw, mower or blower can draw power differently from a drill used intermittently. Cutting dense material, using a larger bit, working in cold conditions or running continuously can all change how long a pack lasts. Therefore, “6Ah lasts exactly 50 percent longer” is not a universal promise, even though 6Ah is 50 percent higher in the stated capacity number than 4Ah.

| Battery choice | What the capacity indicates | Practical trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| 4Ah 18V ONE+ | Lower stored capacity than a 6Ah pack | Often a lighter, more compact choice; actual runtime depends on tool and workload |
| 6Ah 18V ONE+ (PBP007) | Higher capacity; RYOBI positions it for longer runtime | More available energy per charge; runtime still varies by tool and task |
The available product information does not establish universal dimensions or weights for every 4Ah and 6Ah pack. If balance or weight matters, compare the exact model listings and manual rather than inferring from Ah alone.
Which Ryobi charger should you use?
Current chargers differ by job. RYOBI’s compatibility language and performance claims are model-specific, so choose the charger based on the number of packs you need to charge, the platform involved and the exact speed you require.
| Charger | Supported platform | Charging arrangement | Stated performance or feature |
|---|---|---|---|
| PCG004 fast charger | All RYOBI 18V ONE+ batteries | Single-pack charger | RYOBI says it charges an 18V ONE+ High Performance 2Ah battery in less than 30 minutes; that claim applies to the named battery class and is not a promise for every capacity |
| PCG005 dual-port simultaneous charger | All RYOBI 18V ONE+ batteries | Two batteries charge at the same time | Useful when two 18V packs must be ready together; no universal charge time is established for every pack |
| PCG007 dual-platform charger | RYOBI 18V ONE+ or 40V batteries | Charger designed for both voltage platforms | The dual-platform property belongs to the charger; it does not make an 18V battery suitable for a 40V tool or the reverse |
| P117 legacy dual-chemistry charger | Model-specific legacy support | Older charger design | An older kit pairs it with a P102 lithium-ion battery; check the P117 manual before using another battery chemistry or model |
PCG004’s “less than 30 minutes” figure is a RYOBI vendor claim for one High Performance 2Ah battery. A larger 4Ah or 6Ah pack can require a different amount of time, and the claim is not an independent test. PCG005’s simultaneous operation is the relevant feature when the goal is throughput rather than the shortest time for one pack.
Can a Ryobi 18V battery charge on a 40V charger?
Only use a charger that explicitly lists the battery platform. PCG007 is described by RYOBI as compatible with any RYOBI 18V ONE+ or 40V battery, so that specific charger is designed to accept packs from both platforms.

That statement applies to PCG007’s charging function. It does not create cross-platform tool compatibility. An 18V ONE+ battery remains an 18V pack and cannot be used in a 40V tool simply because both can be placed on the same dual-platform charger. Likewise, a 40V battery is not an 18V tool battery.
Do not generalize PCG007’s design to another 40V charger. Check the exact model label and manual whenever the charger is not PCG007.
How to verify a battery, tool and charger before use
- Read the tool label. Confirm that it says RYOBI 18V ONE+ or, for a different platform, RYOBI 40V.
- Read the battery label. Match the platform marking to the tool. An 18V ONE+ pack belongs with 18V ONE+ products.
- Record the battery model. Write down the model code, such as PBP007, and its capacity in Ah. Model identification is more reliable than appearance.
- Read the charger model. PCG004, PCG005 and PCG007 have different functions. An older P117 requires its own manual check.
- Confirm platform and chemistry support. Current 18V charger pages describe compatibility with all 18V ONE+ batteries, while legacy equipment may have narrower or chemistry-specific instructions.
- Check the manual for exceptions. If a label is damaged, a pack is swollen, or the charger is unidentified, do not guess. Replace the unknown component or obtain the manufacturer’s instructions.
Choosing between a basic, fast, dual-port or dual-platform charger
Choose PCG004 when one 18V pack needs to be ready quickly
PCG004 is the straightforward choice when you normally charge one battery at a time and the fast-charge claim matches your pack. Its advertised under-30-minute result is specifically for a High Performance 2Ah battery, so treat it as a model-and-pack example rather than a universal time for 4Ah or 6Ah batteries.
Choose PCG005 when two 18V packs must charge together
PCG005’s defining feature is simultaneous charging of two batteries. It suits a user who rotates packs through several 18V tools or wants two batteries charging without waiting for the first slot to finish. The charger is listed for all RYOBI 18V ONE+ batteries.

Choose PCG007 when one charger must serve 18V and 40V equipment
PCG007 is the relevant model when a household owns both platforms and wants a charger specified for 18V ONE+ and 40V packs. Keep the platform distinction when selecting a tool: dual-platform charging does not turn either battery into the other voltage.
Keep checking a legacy charger instead of replacing assumptions with hope
The P117 example is useful because it is identified as a dual-chemistry charger in an older kit. That does not establish a complete compatibility matrix for every historical RYOBI charger. If the model is not one of the current chargers listed above, use its printed instructions and manual.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What battery features matter beyond Ah?
RYOBI identifies lithium-ion cells, IntelliCell electronics, COOL-CORE temperature management and an LED fuel gauge on the PBP007 6Ah battery page. These are vendor feature descriptions for that product. They can help explain why a pack may include status information or thermal-management features, but they do not document a single circuit design shared by every ONE+ battery.
Recommended Free Tools
Do not infer detailed cutoff thresholds, thermal-protection behavior or charge-control circuitry for an unlisted model. When a pack behaves unexpectedly, rely on the model-specific manual and charger indicators rather than trying to diagnose internal electronics from the Ah rating.

Troubleshooting common compatibility problems
The battery will not slide into the tool
- Confirm that both labels identify the same platform, especially 18V ONE+ versus 40V.
- Remove the pack and inspect the rails and contacts for debris or visible damage.
- Do not force the pack. A mismatch can indicate a different platform or a damaged housing.
The charger does not recognize the battery
- Recheck the charger model and its stated platform support.
- If it is an older charger such as P117, verify chemistry and model support in the manual.
- Try a known-compatible battery only if the manual permits that diagnostic step; otherwise stop using the charger until its instructions are confirmed.
The battery takes longer than expected
- Compare the pack with the exact battery used in the charger’s advertised time. PCG004’s under-30-minute claim is for a High Performance 2Ah battery.
- A 4Ah or 6Ah pack has a different capacity and should not be judged against that 2Ah example.
- Use the charger indicator and manual as the authority for completion rather than a general ONE+ estimate.
Runtime is shorter than expected
- Check whether the tool is performing a high-load task or running continuously.
- Compare capacity: a 6Ah pack is positioned for longer runtime than a 4Ah pack, but the tool and task determine the actual result.
- Inspect the battery model and condition. Do not assume that two packs with the same Ah label have identical age or usage history.
Three practical buying scenarios
You own several 18V ONE+ tools and one 4Ah battery
Keep the 4Ah pack for general use if it is labeled 18V ONE+. Add another 18V ONE+ pack when tool downtime is the problem. Select PCG005 if two packs need to charge simultaneously, or PCG004 if one pack’s charging speed is the priority.
You want longer operation from a single pack
A 6Ah pack such as PBP007 offers higher stated capacity and is positioned by RYOBI for longer runtime. Confirm that the added size or weight suits the tool by checking the exact product information; the available compatibility statement does not provide universal dimensions or weights.
You own both 18V and 40V tools
Use a charger explicitly designed for both platforms, such as PCG007. Keep batteries assigned to their own tools: 18V ONE+ packs go in 18V ONE+ products, and 40V packs go in 40V products.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Bottom line
For an 18V ONE+ tool, the central rule is simple: use an 18V ONE+ battery. Capacity determines how much energy is available, not which platform the pack belongs to. PCG004, PCG005 and PCG007 solve different charging needs, while older chargers require model-by-model verification. A dual-platform charger expands charging options; it never makes 18V and 40V batteries interchangeable in tools.
