How Runway-Independent Fighter Drones Launch and Recover From Ships

Runway-independent fighter drones do not operate without infrastructure. They replace a conventional land runway with some combination of carrier catapults and arresting gear, vertical-lift propulsion, or portable launch-and-capture equipment. The aircraft still needs a suitable deck, handling procedures, control links, power, recovery space and trained personnel.

The best-documented carrier demonstration is the U.S. Navy’s X-47B. It launched by catapult, landed with arresting gear, taxied and refueled on deck, and flew in the carrier pattern alongside manned aircraft. Other efforts—including the VTOL ANCILLARY program and DARPA’s portable SideArm system—show different ways to reduce runway dependence, but they do not establish an operational fleet of shipboard unmanned fighters.

What “runway-independent” means at sea

A runway-independent aircraft can launch and recover without a conventional land airfield runway. At sea, that usually means one of three arrangements:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Carrier launch and recovery: a catapult accelerates the aircraft and arresting gear stops it after touchdown.
  • Vertical takeoff and landing (VTOL): the aircraft rises from and descends onto a deck using vertical-lift propulsion.
  • Portable launch and capture: a fixed-wing unmanned aircraft is launched by a smaller catapult and caught by specialized equipment instead of making a normal runway landing.

These approaches solve different engineering problems. A large carrier can provide powerful launch and recovery machinery, while a smaller ship may have only a compact flight deck and limited weight, space and electrical power. An aircraft designed for vertical flight avoids a runway-like launch system but must carry the propulsion and control hardware needed to hover. A portable system reduces ship modifications but adds its own launcher, capture structure and operating procedures.

“Fighter drone” also needs careful definition. The X-47B was an unmanned combat air system demonstrator. The MQ-25 Stingray is a carrier-based unmanned tanker program whose cited mission is aerial refueling, not air-to-air combat. ANCILLARY is a VTOL UAS development effort, and SideArm is a portable UAS launch-and-capture concept. None of those sources proves that an operational shipboard unmanned fighter fleet is in service.

How catapult launch and arrested recovery work

Catapult launch

A catapult accelerates an aircraft along a short deck track until it reaches flying speed. The aircraft’s launch bar and nose-gear interface must match the catapult, and the flight-control system must command a safe rotation and climb at the end of the stroke. The ship must provide the machinery, deck structure, power and maintenance support for repeated launches.

The Navy’s Electromagnetic Aircraft Launch System (EMALS) performs the same basic launch function as a traditional steam catapult through a different technology. NAVAIR describes EMALS as capable of launching aircraft ranging from lightweight unmanned aircraft to heavy strike fighters. That range does not mean every ship can install it: EMALS is carrier infrastructure, with substantial space, structural and electrical requirements.

Arrested landing

For recovery, the aircraft approaches the carrier, touches down in a designated landing area and catches an arresting wire with a tailhook. The arresting system absorbs the aircraft’s energy and stops it over a short deck distance. The pilot or autonomous flight-control system must maintain the correct approach path, height, speed and touchdown point while compensating for a moving deck, wind and turbulence.

NAVAIR describes the Advanced Arresting Gear (AAG) as a carrier aircraft recovery system. Like EMALS, AAG is shipboard infrastructure rather than a package that a small vessel can use without major modification.

What the X-47B demonstrated

The X-47B provides the clearest evidence that an unmanned aircraft can use a carrier’s normal launch and recovery cycle. Department of Defense reporting described catapult launches, arrested landings, flight-deck taxiing and deck refueling. In 2014 testing, the aircraft operated in the carrier pattern with manned aircraft and was integrated into routine deck activity.

Navy Capt. Beau Duarte, then program manager for the Navy’s Unmanned Carrier Aviation office, summarized the demonstration: “Today we showed that the X-47B could take off, land and fly in the carrier pattern with manned aircraft while maintaining normal flight deck operations.” That statement describes a successful demonstration, not a declaration that an unmanned fighter has entered operational service.

How VTOL shipboard drones launch and recover

Vertical takeoff

A VTOL aircraft uses lift-producing rotors, propellers, ducted fans or another vertical-lift arrangement to leave the deck without a catapult. It then transitions to efficient wing-borne flight when the mission requires range or endurance. On recovery, it slows, reconfigures its propulsion and descends vertically to a marked landing spot.

The advantage is reduced dependence on runway equipment. A ship does not need a long launch track or arresting wire for the aircraft itself. The trade-off is that vertical-lift components add mass, aerodynamic complexity, fuel or battery demand and control-law challenges. Hovering close to a moving deck also exposes the aircraft to ship motion, wind over the deck and turbulent air from the superstructure.

ANCILLARY’s development goal

DARPA’s ANCILLARY program aims to develop and demonstrate a long-endurance VTOL UAS for ship flight decks and austere land locations without additional infrastructure equipment. The 2024 concept announcement describes a vehicle intended to take off and land vertically from ships and remote sites while flying missions like an efficient winged aircraft.

DARPA stated a goal of increasing VTOL UAS capability by a factor of three over the then-current state of the art. That is a program objective, not a measured result from an operational aircraft. ANCILLARY should therefore be described as a development effort rather than a fielded combat drone.

How portable launch-and-capture systems work

Launching a fixed-wing UAS

A portable system can use an external catapult to accelerate a fixed-wing aircraft to flying speed. The launcher may be truck-mounted, ship-mounted or installed at a fixed site. Because the aircraft does not need a conventional runway, the ship can support fixed-wing operations from a smaller deck than a full-size carrier, provided it has room for the launcher and safe operating areas.

Capturing the aircraft

Instead of touching down on wheels, the aircraft flies through a capture device. The device absorbs the aircraft’s energy and brings it to a controlled stop. The aircraft, capture geometry, approach-control software and recovery equipment must all be designed as one system; a launcher alone does not create a shipboard recovery capability.

DARPA reported a full-scale SideArm demonstration that repeatedly captured a 400-pound Lockheed Martin Fury UAS after launch from an external catapult. DARPA described SideArm as a portable concept for truck-mounted, ship-mounted or fixed-site use and identified UAS up to 900 pounds as a target class. The 900-pound figure is a program target, not a demonstrated maximum.

Program manager Graham Drozeski said: “SideArm aims to replicate carriers’ capability to quickly and safely accelerate and decelerate planes through a portable, low-cost kit that is mission-flexible, independent from local infrastructure, and compatible with existing and future tactical unmanned aircraft.” The demonstration shows the feasibility of the concept; it does not show that SideArm is a standard operational system aboard ships.

Smaller shipboard systems

The Office of Naval Research has separately reported demonstration flight testing of a shipboard-capable launch and recovery system for ScanEagle. That work illustrates how smaller UAS can use specialized equipment rather than a carrier catapult and arresting wire. It should not be generalized into a universal solution for larger aircraft or fighter-sized loads.

How the approaches compare

Approach Launch method Recovery method Typical ship implication Evidence and maturity
Carrier catapult and arresting gear Ship catapult, including EMALS on compatible carriers Tailhook and arresting system, such as AAG Requires a large carrier deck, substantial machinery, structural integration and power X-47B demonstrated the cycle with carrier operations; EMALS and AAG are carrier infrastructure
VTOL Aircraft lifts vertically from a deck Aircraft descends vertically to a landing spot No runway or catapult for the aircraft, but deck clearance, control systems and vertical-lift energy remain essential ANCILLARY describes a development goal, not an operational fighter
Portable launch and capture External or ship-mounted catapult Dedicated capture equipment Potentially smaller footprint than a carrier, but launcher, catcher, safety zones and handling gear are still required SideArm demonstrated repeated capture of a 400-pound UAS; operational ship deployment is not established

What the ship still has to provide

Runway independence shifts requirements; it does not remove them. Before an aircraft can be operated safely, designers and crews must resolve at least these integration areas.

Deck space and aircraft handling

The ship needs a launch or landing area, parking positions, routes for moving the aircraft and protected zones for personnel. Recovery equipment may require clear approach and departure paths. Solicitations for shipboard fixed-wing UAV recovery specifically consider smaller deck footprints and the ship’s space, weight and power limits.

Weight and structural loads

Catapult strokes, arrested landings and capture events impose concentrated loads on the deck and supporting structure. A ship that can park an aircraft may not be able to absorb the forces generated by launching or stopping it. Designers also account for fuel, payload, maintenance equipment and sea-state effects.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Electrical power and other utilities

Launchers, recovery devices, charging systems, mission equipment and control stations draw power. EMALS and other carrier systems demand far more ship integration than a small pneumatic or mechanical launcher. Fuel handling, battery support, data networking and fire protection must be considered alongside the aircraft itself.

Control and communications

An unmanned aircraft needs a command-and-control architecture that supports launch, flight, approach and recovery. The system must maintain a reliable link or execute a validated autonomous recovery if the link is interrupted. Carrier operations also require coordination with manned aircraft, deck directors and ship sensors so that the drone enters the pattern at the correct time and position.

Deck procedures and safety

Aircraft handlers need procedures for taxiing, securing, refueling or recharging, arming and servicing the vehicle. The X-47B tests examined how an unmanned aircraft could fit into normal carrier routines. Portable and VTOL systems require their own exclusion zones, recovery checks and emergency responses. A drone that can technically land on a deck is not automatically safe to operate in a busy shipboard cycle.

Where the main programs stand

X-47B: carrier combat demonstrator

The X-47B is the strongest example of unmanned carrier integration in the cited evidence. It completed catapult launches, arrested landings, deck taxiing and refueling activity, and operated alongside manned aircraft during carrier testing. Its status is that of a demonstrator, not proof of a deployed unmanned fighter force.

MQ-25 Stingray: unmanned tanker

MQ-25 is intended to provide aerial refueling from an aircraft carrier. NAVAIR identifies deck handling, taxiing, launch and recovery as integration elements, and the Navy reported an initial carrier demonstration evaluating the aircraft and its ground-control system in the carrier environment. Calling MQ-25 a fighter would misstate its cited mission.

ANCILLARY: VTOL research

ANCILLARY targets long-endurance VTOL operation from ship decks and austere land locations. Its stated performance improvements and infrastructure goals are developmental aims, not evidence of an operational aircraft.

SideArm: portable recovery research

SideArm is a DARPA research effort built around portable launch and capture. The full-scale demonstration and stated weight targets show the intended design space, but no cited source establishes routine deployment aboard ships.

Other proposed shipboard concepts

Navy solicitations seek recovery systems for fixed-wing UAVs on air-capable ships, with attention to deck footprint, ship space, weight and power. A solicitation documents a research need; it does not prove that an awarded system has been installed. A Small Business Innovation Research award record for a “Shipboard UAV Chariot Launch and Recovery System” describes a proposed vertical-launch-and-recovery concept, which should likewise be treated as research and development rather than a fielded capability.

Why there is no single “fighter-drone” launch system

Aircraft size and mission drive the answer. A carrier-sized unmanned combat aircraft can use catapult and arresting systems because the ship already has the necessary deck machinery. A small reconnaissance or communications UAS may use a compact launcher and catcher. A VTOL design can work from a constrained deck but pays for that flexibility in propulsion, mass and control complexity.

The ship also changes the problem. Unlike a fixed runway, it moves, pitches and rolls; its wind environment changes with heading and speed; and its deck is shared with fuel, weapons, vehicles and people. Launch and recovery therefore depend on the complete aircraft-ship-control system, not merely on whether the aircraft has wheels or wings.

How to judge a claim about a shipboard fighter drone

  1. Identify the aircraft’s mission. Is it a combat demonstrator, tanker, surveillance UAS or technology demonstrator?
  2. Identify the recovery event. Look for a documented arrested landing, vertical landing or capture—not merely a launch from a ship.
  3. Check the ship and equipment. Determine whether the test used a full carrier, a specialized deck, a temporary launcher or a portable catcher.
  4. Separate demonstration from service. A successful test proves what happened under those conditions; it does not establish fleet deployment, routine availability or future schedule.
  5. Check the integration scope. Evidence should address deck handling, control systems, power, space and operations with other aircraft, not just an isolated flight.

Bottom line for readers

Runway-independent fighter drones launch and recover from ships by matching the aircraft to the ship’s available system: carrier catapults and arresting gear for large carrier-compatible aircraft, vertical lift for designs built to hover, or portable launch-and-capture equipment for smaller fixed-wing UAS. The X-47B demonstrated the carrier method; ANCILLARY and SideArm represent development paths rather than proof of an operational unmanned fighter fleet. In every case, “runway-independent” means independent of a conventional runway—not independent of a ship, its deck, its power, its control network or its procedures.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does runway-independent mean a drone can operate from any ship?

No. The aircraft still needs a compatible deck, launch or recovery equipment, control links, handling space, power and safety procedures. Carrier systems, VTOL aircraft and portable launch-and-capture systems impose different ship requirements.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Is MQ-25 a fighter drone?

No. The cited Navy and NAVAIR descriptions identify MQ-25 as an unmanned carrier aircraft intended for aerial refueling. Its deck handling, launch and recovery integration does not make it a fighter.

What has actually landed autonomously on a carrier?

The X-47B demonstrated carrier catapult launches and arrested landings while operating in the carrier pattern with manned aircraft. That historical demonstration should not be confused with evidence of an operational unmanned fighter fleet.
