How Rocket Launches Affect Satellite Internet and GPS Reception

Short answer: A rocket launch can measurably disturb the ionosphere, and those disturbances can appear in scientific GPS and radio measurements. However, the available evidence does not show that launches routinely knock out consumer satellite internet or make ordinary phones lose GPS reception. The size and even the direction of an effect depend on the launch, location, radio frequency, solar conditions and observation geometry.

Why a launch can affect radio signals

The ionosphere is the electrically charged portion of the upper atmosphere, extending roughly from 60 to 1,000 kilometres above Earth. Radio waves passing through it can be delayed, refracted, scattered or, under some conditions, attenuated. Navigation systems estimate signal travel time and phase through this region, so changes in electron density can become measurable errors or uncertainty.

A launch can disturb the ionosphere in two main ways:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Exhaust chemistry: Rocket exhaust injects gases and water vapour into an already ionised plasma. Chemical reactions can reduce the local free-electron concentration, producing an electron-density depletion along and around the ascent path.
  • Launch-generated waves: The vehicle and its exhaust create acoustic and other pressure disturbances. These waves travel upward and can alter ionospheric electron density after the vehicle has passed.

Ground receivers can detect these changes by analysing GNSS signal delay, carrier phase and total electron content (TEC). Detecting a disturbance in a scientific data set is not the same as demonstrating a service outage for every person under the launch.

What the strongest launch measurements show

Electron launch: a measured TEC decrease

A Space Weather study published by the American Geophysical Union examined Rocket Lab’s Electron launch on 22 March 2021. GNSS receivers at the Chatham Islands detected a maximum vertical TEC decrease of 2.7 TECU. The study’s model produced a comparable decrease of 2.6 TECU.

TEC units describe the number of electrons along a signal path; one TECU equals 1016 electrons per square metre. The Electron values are therefore evidence of a launch-associated ionospheric depletion at specific stations and times. They are not a conversion into metres of phone-position error, and they should not be treated as the expected result of every launch. The result came from one launch and a particular geographic observation path.

Space Shuttle STS-125: acoustic waves in GPS phase data

Researchers analysing the Space Shuttle STS-125 ascent used GPS carrier-phase measurements to identify ionospheric changes associated with acoustic waves from the shuttle. This case demonstrates that a vehicle’s pressure disturbance can propagate into the ionosphere and leave a signature in precise GNSS data. It does not establish that consumer receivers will lose lock or that a launch produces a repeatable outage.

GSLV-D6: a lower-ionosphere VLF observation

A 2020 case study of India’s GSLV-D6 launch reported an approximately 3 dB signal-amplitude perturbation in very-low-frequency (VLF) propagation observations. VLF signals occupy a different frequency regime and use different propagation paths from GPS and satellite broadband. The number is useful evidence that launch disturbances can affect radio propagation, but it cannot be presented as a 3 dB change in a home satellite-internet connection or a GPS signal.

Rocket-plume modelling for HF and shortwave

A 2021 modelling paper examined rocket-plume effects on over-the-horizon high-frequency (HF) radio. The calculated changes varied with frequency, elevation angle, solar activity, time of day and season. These are modelled shortwave results, not measurements of a consumer broadband outage. They show why a single rule such as “every launch disrupts radio” is physically unjustified.

Can a rocket launch affect GPS reception?

Yes, in principle and sometimes measurably; no, not as a routine loss of reception for ordinary users. GPS signals cross the ionosphere on their way to a receiver. A change in electron content changes the signal’s group delay and carrier phase. Professional GNSS networks can resolve small variations that a phone’s positioning software may smooth out or combine with other corrections.

NASA explains that ionospheric plasma is a major source of GPS error. In a NASA discussion of the Sporadic-E mission, study lead Henry Valentine was quoted as saying: “The biggest source of error in the GPS in your phone, for example, is from the plasma in the ionosphere, and sporadic E layers can contribute to this uncertainty.” That statement describes the general role of the ionosphere; it does not attribute every Sporadic-E layer to a rocket.

What a user might notice

  • A phone may take longer to obtain a position, show a slightly different track or report reduced accuracy when several error sources combine.
  • A survey receiver or timing system may record a detectable phase or TEC change even when a phone appears normal.
  • A brief “searching for GPS” message is more often related to buildings, trees, indoor use, receiver conditions or local interference than to a launch. The documented launch studies do not establish a universal consumer failure signature.

The 2.7 TECU Electron result cannot be translated into a universal number of metres because the position error depends on satellite geometry, receiver algorithms, dual- or single-frequency processing, corrections and the direction of the ionospheric gradient.

Can a launch knock out satellite internet?

The reviewed evidence does not document an observed outage or quantified user-visible degradation for a named consumer satellite-internet service during or after a rocket launch. A launch can disturb the ionosphere, but that fact alone is not proof that a broadband terminal will disconnect.

Satellite-internet systems use their own satellite constellations, ground gateways, tracking algorithms and frequency allocations. The effect of an ionospheric disturbance depends on the radio band and the path through the disturbed region. Findings from VLF or HF experiments cannot be directly applied to a broadband link operating at a different frequency. The 2021 HF model, for example, addresses over-the-horizon shortwave propagation rather than a household broadband service.

For a customer, a brief service interruption could have many other causes, including network maintenance, gateway congestion, rain attenuation at higher microwave frequencies, terminal obstruction or equipment faults. None of those causes should be labelled a rocket effect without measurements tying the timing and location to the launch.

Why frequency and measurement method matter

Evidence type What was observed or calculated What it can support What it cannot establish
GNSS TEC Electron launch study measured a 2.7 TECU maximum vertical decrease; modelled value was 2.6 TECU. A launch-associated ionospheric depletion along a documented observation path. A standard phone-position error or outage for all launches.
GPS carrier phase STS-125 data revealed changes associated with ascent-generated acoustic waves. A way to detect launch-driven ionospheric disturbances. Routine loss of GPS lock for consumers.
VLF propagation GSLV-D6 case study reported an approximately 3 dB amplitude perturbation. Evidence of a launch-linked effect in the lower-ionosphere/VLF system. A 3 dB change in GPS or satellite broadband.
HF/shortwave model Predicted plume effects that changed with frequency, elevation, season, time and solar activity. Why propagation responses are conditional and frequency-dependent. An observed broadband interruption.

“Signal changed” is therefore an incomplete description. A researcher may be measuring phase, amplitude, delay or TEC, each with different units and implications. The receiver type, frequency, elevation angle and geographic separation from the launch all matter.

What Sporadic-E has to do with the question

Sporadic-E layers are temporary, unusually dense ionised patches in the E region of the ionosphere. NASA describes them as capable of disrupting some radio communications and adding uncertainty to GPS. They arise from variable atmospheric and geophysical processes. Their presence during a launch does not, by itself, show that the rocket created them.

This distinction prevents a common attribution error: a launch may coincide with a naturally occurring Sporadic-E event, while the two phenomena remain unrelated. To claim a launch caused a particular layer, researchers would need observations and modelling that separate the launch signal from normal ionospheric variability.

How conditions change the size of any effect

Launch-related disturbances are not fixed specifications. Important variables include:

  • Rocket and propellant: Exhaust composition and the amount released determine the chemical interaction with plasma.
  • Trajectory and altitude: The disturbance follows a three-dimensional path, while a receiver sees only the portion intersecting its signal ray.
  • Distance and geometry: A station directly beneath or near the affected region can see a different signature from one hundreds of kilometres away.
  • Frequency: HF, VLF, GNSS and broadband microwave signals respond differently to the same plasma structure.
  • Solar and atmospheric state: Solar activity, season, local time and background electron density alter both the baseline and the response.
  • Observation method: A scientific dual-frequency receiver can resolve changes that a consumer device hides through filtering and error correction.

What to do if GPS or internet behaves oddly near a launch

There is no launch-day consumer product or special setting established by these studies. Use ordinary troubleshooting while treating the launch as one possible environmental coincidence rather than the default explanation.

  1. Check the timing and area. Note whether the problem began at the launch time and whether nearby devices or independent services show the same symptom.
  2. Move to an unobstructed location. For GPS, go outdoors with a clear view of the sky. Buildings, vehicles and foliage can block or reflect signals.
  3. Allow the receiver to reacquire. Keep the navigation app open for several minutes and avoid judging accuracy during the first fix.
  4. For satellite internet, inspect local causes. Check terminal power, cables, obstructions, weather and the provider’s status information before attributing a fault to ionospheric activity.
  5. Record evidence for professional systems. Surveyors and network operators should preserve receiver logs, signal-to-noise data, phase, TEC and timestamps so the event can be compared with independent stations.

If a service returns quickly and no independent measurements link the event to the launch, the most accurate description is a coincident or unexplained interruption—not a proven rocket-caused outage.

Common misconceptions

“A launch creates a GPS blackout.”

The documented cases show measurable perturbations, not a universal blackout. A scientific receiver can detect a change while consumer positioning continues to work.

“The 2.7 TECU result tells me how many metres my phone moved.”

It does not. TEC is an electron-content measurement. Converting it to position error requires receiver design, satellite geometry and correction data that were not supplied by the case study.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

“A 3 dB VLF change means my broadband will slow by 3 dB.”

No. The VLF result concerns another frequency band and propagation system. It cannot be relabelled as a satellite-internet measurement.

“Any Sporadic-E layer during a launch was caused by the rocket.”

Sporadic-E is variable and can occur naturally. Coincidence is not proof of causation.

What the evidence supports

Rocket exhaust and launch-generated waves can perturb ionospheric plasma. GNSS measurements have detected those disturbances, including the 2.7 TECU Electron case, and GPS phase data have captured acoustic-wave effects from a shuttle ascent. Separate VLF observations and HF modelling show that other radio systems can respond under particular conditions.

Those findings support a qualified answer: launches can affect the environment through which radio signals travel, but the reviewed evidence does not demonstrate a routine consumer GPS failure or satellite-internet outage. Any real-world claim should identify the launch, frequency band, receiver measurements, location and background ionospheric conditions before assigning causation.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does TECU mean in a launch-related GPS study?

A TECU is a unit of total electron content: 1016 electrons per square metre along a signal path. It measures ionospheric electron content, not metres of positioning error.

Should I turn off GPS or satellite internet during a launch?

No special shutdown is supported by the available evidence. Keep normal services running and troubleshoot ordinary reception, power, obstruction and network causes if a problem occurs.

Why can researchers see an effect that my phone does not?

Scientific GNSS receivers analyse carrier phase and dual-frequency TEC with precise timing. Phones apply filtering and may show only a small accuracy change, even when a measurable atmospheric perturbation is present.

Can a launch be blamed for every radio interruption nearby?

No. Attribution requires timing, location, frequency-specific measurements and comparison with natural ionospheric variability. A coincident interruption is not proof that the rocket caused it.
