How Robots Collect Training Data From People—and What Happens to That Data

Robots learn from people when a person demonstrates a task, controls a robot remotely, or wears or operates a camera that captures human activity. A useful training record links what the robot could observe to what happened next: actions, timing, robot state, task boundaries, and the outcome. After recording, a project may synchronize and label the episode, use it for training or evaluation, share it under defined terms, retain it for a period, or delete it. There is no universal rule for keeping videos, derived data, or trained models, so the collection notice and consent terms matter as much as the recording itself.

What “training data from people” actually contains

A robot-training example is usually more than a video file. Depending on the setup, it can combine camera views with the robot’s joint or end-effector state, control commands, timestamps, task instructions, episode boundaries, and labels describing success or failure. The important learning signal is the relationship between an observation and the action that followed it.

For example, a wrist camera may show a hand approaching a cup while the robot log records a gripper command and the exact time of that command. A later label can identify whether the cup was grasped successfully. Without synchronization, the video and command may be offset, making the example less useful or even misleading.

Recordings can also contain people who are not the operator. A shared workspace may include bystanders, visitors, voices, faces, gestures, or other identifying details. Whether those signals are collected, blurred, retained, or excluded depends on the project’s sensors and rules; participation in a demonstration does not by itself establish what happens to everyone visible in the scene.

Three main ways people generate robot data

Teleoperation: a person controls the robot

In teleoperation, an operator steers a simulated or physical robot while the system records the demonstration. RoboTurk documents a six-degree-of-freedom interface that maps phone movement to robot-arm movement, supports remote control of simulated and physical arms, and allows a person to intervene when an autonomous robot needs help. That is a concrete research design, not a universal requirement that every robot be controlled by a phone.

Teleoperation is useful when the robot’s own sensors and action space need to be represented directly. The operator’s commands can be logged alongside camera images and robot state, producing examples that a policy can imitate. It also lets a human recover from an unsafe or unsuccessful autonomous attempt, although the recovery itself becomes part of the recorded behavior if the system saves it.

Direct human demonstration

A person can perform the task while cameras and other sensors capture the behavior. The person may manipulate the same objects that the robot will later handle, or demonstrate a procedure that a robot is expected to reproduce. The collection description must specify whether the human action is itself the target, a guide for a robot controller, or simply an observation from which the system will infer goals and steps.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Direct demonstrations can expose details that are difficult to encode in a scripted command: how a person approaches an object, adjusts a grip after a small error, or pauses when another person enters the workspace. They are not automatically interchangeable with teleoperation records. A human hand trajectory and a robot arm’s action space may differ, so teams need a mapping or a model that can translate between them.

First-person, or egocentric, capture

In first-person collection, a camera mounted on a person or positioned from the person’s viewpoint records what the person sees and does. Commercial collection descriptions distinguish this approach from direct demonstrations and robot teleoperation. The resulting footage can show the visual cues a person used to choose an action, but it does not necessarily include robot-state or control-command data unless those signals are recorded separately.

First-person footage is therefore best understood as an observation source. It can help a system learn objects, procedures, or human intent, while a separate process may be needed to connect those observations to the target robot’s controls.

Human-present interaction datasets

Some projects deliberately place people and robots in the same task rather than collecting demonstrations in an empty workspace. The HABIT dataset uses two Franka Research 3 arms and five synchronized RGB cameras, with cameras on both the robot side and the human side. Its tasks classify the human–robot relationship as collaborator, coworker, or supervisor: acting together, working separately in one shared space, or having the human direct the robot.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

HABIT’s protocol illustrates why context must be recorded with the action. Its authors write: “Each operator acts only after directly observing the partner’s behavior. We prohibit any coordination signal that is not captured in the recorded observations, so every demonstrated action is grounded in cues that are also available to the policy.” In practical terms, a dataset should capture the visible or audible cue that prompted an action rather than relying on an unrecorded instruction or gesture.

What a well-formed episode records

Projects differ, but a robust episode commonly has the following components:

  • Observations: external, wrist-mounted, robot-side, human-side, or first-person video, plus any other sensors the project has chosen to save.
  • Actions: teleoperation commands, trajectories, gripper operations, or other controls expressed in the robot’s action space.
  • Robot state: positions, velocities, joint readings, end-effector state, and system status when available.
  • Timing: synchronized timestamps so an observation can be paired with the action that follows.
  • Task context: instructions, scene information, object identity, operator or session identifiers, and episode boundaries.
  • Outcomes and labels: success or failure, phases, segments, object labels, or notes about interruptions and intervention.

Operant describes collection episodes recorded in the robot’s action space with synchronized sensors, explicit episode boundaries, and metadata for the task, operator, scene, and outcome. It also lists optional segmentation, phase, success, and object labels. Those are features of that provider’s service, not a standard specification that every collection must meet.

How much data can one project produce?

Named projects show why raw counts need context. RoboTurk’s dataset page lists 1,071 successful picking demonstrations, 1,147 successful assembly demonstrations, and 3,224 demonstrations in total for a pilot associated with its CoRL 2018 work. A separate RoboTurk real-world dataset records 111 hours of robot demonstrations collected in one week, involving 54 non-expert users and 2,144 demonstrations across three dexterous-manipulation tasks, in work associated with IROS 2019.

What happens immediately after recording

The post-recording path usually has several technical and administrative stages. A project may omit a stage, combine stages, or repeat them after quality review.

  1. Ingest and protect the files. Video, robot logs, control streams, and session metadata are copied into project storage. Access controls and an inventory determine who can see raw files.
  2. Align the streams. Teams synchronize camera frames, robot state, and actions, correct clock offsets, and check for missing or corrupted segments.
  3. Define episodes. A continuous session is divided into tasks or attempts with start and end times. Failed attempts and human interventions may be retained, excluded, or labeled according to the project’s quality policy.
  4. Add metadata and labels. Operators or annotators can mark the task, scene, objects, phases, success, failure, and other events. Labels may be attached to the original recording or stored as a derived file.
  5. Run quality checks. A team can inspect whether the robot state and camera view are complete, whether actions are in the intended action space, and whether the outcome is recorded consistently.
  6. Create training and evaluation splits. Episodes may be separated so a policy is tested on people, scenes, objects, or tasks it did not see during training. The exact split is a scientific choice, not a universal rule.

These steps can create additional data about a person even when the original video is unchanged. A timestamped label, operator identifier, transcript, or quality annotation may be derived from the recording and governed by different access or deletion procedures.

How the recordings are used to teach or test a robot

Demonstrations can be used for imitation learning, policy evaluation, or both. In imitation learning, the system is trained to associate an observation with the demonstrated action. In evaluation, held-out episodes measure whether a policy succeeds in a task or responds appropriately to a human.

Human-present datasets add situations that an empty-room collection cannot show: coordination, shared-space movement, following a gesture or direction, and reacting to another person’s behavior. A policy trained on such data may still fail outside the recorded conditions; the dataset exposes examples, not a guarantee of safe or general intelligence.

The match between collection and deployment matters. Demonstrations recorded with one robot’s arms, cameras, workspace, and action limits may need calibration or adaptation before they can train another embodiment. A large number of episodes cannot by itself fix a mismatch in sensors, object geometry, timing, or task definitions.

Are recordings shared or licensed?

Some projects publish datasets, some provide access to approved users, and some keep recordings inside a commercial or research organization. A public paper or dataset page does not automatically grant permission to copy every raw video, redistribute derived labels, or use the data for a new commercial purpose.

How long is the data kept?

There is no single retention schedule for robot-training data. A project may retain raw recordings while models are being developed, archive a curated dataset, delete files after a stated period, or decommission a dataset when it is no longer needed. The ISO/CD 26264-1 committee draft describes a dataset lifecycle that reaches decommissioning, but it is a draft under development rather than a final standard or a universal robotics rule.

Retention can differ by data type. Raw video, synchronized sensor logs, annotations, anonymized summaries, and trained model checkpoints may sit in separate systems with separate deletion controls. A notice that promises deletion of the recording may not spell out whether backups, derived labels, or published aggregate results remain.

Does deleting a video remove it from a trained model?

Not necessarily. The reviewed robotics sources do not establish a general method that can identify and erase the influence of one recording from every trained policy. Deleting the source file can stop future access to that file, but it does not automatically reconstruct a model as if the example had never been used. Ask specifically whether deletion covers raw data, annotations, cached copies, checkpoints, and models trained before the request.

Model fate is therefore a separate governance question. A project may retrain a model, keep an existing checkpoint, or be unable to provide a technical guarantee about removing one example’s influence. The answer must come from the project’s terms rather than from a general assumption about machine learning.

Privacy rules and notices that matter

Purpose and compatibility

The European Commission’s GDPR explanation says organizations should identify processing purposes and inform individuals about them. If data is later used for a new purpose, the organization must consider whether that use is compatible with the original one. Consent or a notice should therefore be read alongside the stated purpose, not treated as blanket permission for every future robot project.

Minimisation and storage limitation

For personal and biometric information in the United Kingdom, the Information Commissioner’s Office describes minimisation as limiting information to what is adequate, relevant, and necessary, and storage limitation as keeping it only as long as necessary. The ICO guidance page is under review following legislative changes, so time-sensitive legal decisions require checking the current guidance and obtaining appropriate advice.

Explicit lifecycle controls

NIST SP 800-63A-4 discusses notice, retention, and deletion processes for identity-proofing and biometric identity services. It is a useful example of explicit governance controls, but it addresses identity services and should not be presented as a rule for every robot-training dataset.

How to find out what happens to your recording

Before taking part in a demonstration, use the collection notice, consent form, contract, or license to answer these questions:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • What is collected? Ask whether the project records video, audio, robot state, control inputs, location, account details, or faces and voices of bystanders.
  • Why is it collected? Look for the exact purposes: research, evaluation, product development, safety analysis, publication, or another use.
  • Who can access it? Identify internal teams, contractors, academic collaborators, customers, reviewers, or the public, and whether access is limited to selected fields.
  • Will it be shared? Check licenses, cross-border transfers, publication plans, and restrictions on redistribution or re-identification.
  • How long is it kept? Look for a retention period or a stated deletion trigger for raw and derived data.
  • How do you request deletion or access? Confirm the contact method, identity checks, response process, and what happens to backups and models.
  • What happens to earlier training? Ask whether a deletion request affects future training only, existing checkpoints, or neither.

If the notice is silent on one of these points, treat that as an unanswered question rather than assuming the most favorable outcome. A clear answer should distinguish the original recording from labels, copies, published material, and trained models.

What people should remember

Robots learn from people through teleoperation, direct demonstrations, and first-person observation, often combined with synchronized video, actions, robot state, timing, and task context. Human-present collections can teach coordination and shared-space behavior that an empty workspace cannot provide. Afterward, the material may be checked, labeled, trained on, evaluated, shared, retained, or deleted according to project-specific rules. No general policy guarantees that every video is kept, that every video is erased on request, or that deleting a recording removes its influence from a model. The collection notice and license are the authoritative place to determine what happens to a particular person’s data.
