Robot vacuum-and-mop combos do not all treat mixed flooring the same way. Depending on the model and its settings, a robot may lift its mop when it detects carpet, retract the mop above the chassis, avoid carpet altogether, or let you choose a carpet-avoidance mode. On hard floors, it can usually vacuum and mop in the same cleaning program, but the exact sequence is model-specific.
Obstacle avoidance is a separate capability. A robot can recognize and route around some objects, yet no feature description proves that it will identify every cord, toy, sock, rug edge, or other obstacle. The safest approach is to compare the model’s documented carpet response, detection method, clearance, obstacle-sensing features, and regional specifications before buying or scheduling unattended runs.

What happens when the robot moves from hard floor to carpet?
The robot continuously follows its cleaning map and applies the floor-response rules selected in its app or settings. When its carpet-detection system identifies a carpeted area, the software may change the mop position, stop mopping in that zone, or route around it. The vacuum function may continue, but whether it does so while the mop is raised or after a detour depends on the model.

Roborock’s support documentation illustrates this configurable approach: “For example, you can set the robot to lift its mop automatically when it detects carpet.” Its support center also describes four carpet-avoidance modes, while noting that the available choices depend on the robot and its software. Read the exact mode descriptions for your model at Roborock Support rather than assuming that every robot exposes the same controls.

Lift the mop
A lift design raises the wet pad or mop assembly far enough for the robot to travel over carpet while leaving the pad attached. This is useful when you want one continuous run across rooms and the manufacturer specifies enough clearance for your rugs. The lift height, the carpet types it can cross, and whether vacuuming continues are model-specific details that should be confirmed in the manual.
Retract the mop above the robot
A retractable design moves the mop assembly to the top of the robot instead of merely raising it a small distance. The product page for the iRobot Roomba Combo j9+ describes this arrangement as moving the mop to the top of the robot to keep carpet dry: iRobot’s product specifications. This is an example of one product’s mechanism, not a standard shared by all combo robots.
Avoid carpet
In an avoidance mode, the robot treats mapped carpet as a no-mop or no-entry area and turns away before crossing it. This can be the most conservative choice when the carpet is valuable, highly absorbent, or too thick for the mop mechanism to clear. The trade-off is that a robot set to avoid carpet may not vacuum that area during the same run.
Let the user choose a mode
Some apps expose several carpet responses, allowing you to choose between lifting, avoiding, or another model-specific behavior. A setting that appears in one product family may be absent in another, and an app update can change its label or location. Check the robot’s manual and the current app menu for the exact options before relying on an unattended schedule.
Carpet detection is a trigger, not a guarantee
Automatic carpet handling starts with detection. The robot must first decide that the surface below or ahead is carpet, then apply the programmed response. That decision can be affected by the rug’s pile height, a very thin mat, a dark or patterned edge, a transition strip, how the rug is positioned, and the model’s operating conditions. A feature description confirms that a detection function exists; it does not establish perfect recognition on every floor covering.

For that reason, test the robot on each important rug before leaving it alone. Watch the first transition in daylight and under the lighting used during scheduled cleaning. Confirm that the mop actually reaches its lift or retraction position, that the robot does not drag a wet pad over the edge, and that it can return to the hard floor without getting stuck. If a rug is consistently misclassified, use a no-mop zone, a virtual barrier, or a carpet-avoidance mode if the model provides one.
ECOVACS gives a concrete example of a detection-and-lift system on the DEEBOT T20 OMNI. Its product page describes ultrasonic carpet detection and automatic mop lifting: ECOVACS’ T20 OMNI specifications. That description supports the existence of those features on that product; it is not a measurement of detection accuracy across all rugs.

On tile, sealed wood, vinyl, laminate, and other hard surfaces approved by the manufacturer, the robot can run its vacuum and mop program together or in separate passes. The app may let you select vacuum-only, mop-only, or a combined routine. In a combined routine, the robot vacuums debris and applies the damp mop according to its programmed path; some models change the mop position when they reach a carpeted zone.
Before the first wet run, map the rooms and identify surfaces that should remain dry. Set no-mop zones around unsealed flooring, delicate rugs, floor vents, pet-feeding areas, or thresholds where water could pool. Use only the cleaning solution and water guidance supplied for the robot. A hard floor that looks similar to another room may have a different finish, so follow the floor manufacturer’s care instructions as well as the robot manual.
Transitions and thresholds
Mixed-floor homes often include a raised doorway strip or a rug with a curled edge. The robot must climb the transition while carrying or lifting its mop. If it stalls at the edge, lower the transition height with a secure strip or mark the area as restricted; do not assume that a higher mop lift will solve a navigation problem. A dry test run without water is a practical way to verify that the robot can cross every threshold.

Wet-pad management
A mop that remains damp after a run can transfer moisture to carpet on the next start if the robot begins in the wrong room or fails to detect a rug. Schedule the robot to start from its dock on a hard floor, and use the manufacturer’s pad-washing or drying cycle when available. Remove and clean the pad at the interval specified for your model; replacement pads are not universal, so confirm the exact model compatibility before ordering.
Obstacle avoidance is a separate system
Carpet response answers “what should happen on this floor?” Obstacle avoidance answers “what should happen when something blocks the route?” A robot may have carpet detection but limited object recognition, or object sensing without a mop that can clear carpet. Evaluate the two capabilities independently.
iRobot’s March 11, 2025 announcement says its new robot lineup includes automatic carpet detection and avoidance and object sensing and avoidance capabilities. The announcement states that the lineup was to become available in North America and select European markets beginning March 18, 2025: iRobot’s media announcement. That is a lineup-level statement; it does not prove that every model or every object will be recognized, nor that availability is identical in every country.
Even when a robot advertises object sensing, treat it as assistance rather than a substitute for preparation. Cords, small toys, clothing, pet waste, and lightweight objects can move, hide under furniture, or sit outside the sensor’s reliable range. Clear the floor before the first scheduled run, then inspect the map and the robot’s behavior. If it repeatedly contacts a particular object, create a restricted zone or remove the object instead of assuming a firmware update will make the problem disappear.
Feature comparison: what the documented examples show

These examples show why a simple “best for carpet” ranking would be misleading. The cited material describes features, not a controlled test comparing cleaning results, moisture transfer, detection success, or obstacle-clearance rates. No comparable independent statistic establishes how well one combo cleans every carpet, mops every hard floor, or avoids every object.

How to configure a combo robot for mixed floors
- Identify every surface. List hard floors, low-pile rugs, thick rugs, loose mats, thresholds, and areas that must never be wet.
- Complete a mapping run. Use the robot’s dry mapping procedure so rooms and floor boundaries are recorded before adding water or detergent.
- Choose the carpet response. In the app, select lift, retract, avoid, or the model’s equivalent. If the menu offers several carpet-avoidance modes, read each description rather than selecting the first default.
- Create restrictions where detection is uncertain. Add no-mop zones or virtual barriers around rugs that the robot misidentifies, unsealed flooring, and fragile objects.
- Run a supervised dry test. Watch every carpet transition, threshold, chair leg, and narrow passage. Confirm that the robot can return to the dock.
- Run a supervised wet test. Fill the tank as directed, start on a hard floor, and verify that the pad lifts or retracts before the robot reaches each rug.
- Schedule only after inspection. Remove cords and small objects, check that mats lie flat, and review the map after the first unattended run.
- Maintain the route. Empty debris, clean sensors and wheels according to the manual, wash or replace mop pads as specified, and revise restricted zones when furniture or rugs move.
Choosing the right carpet behavior
Choose lift or retraction when you want one continuous route
A lift or retract system is convenient for homes where hard floors and carpet are interleaved and the robot needs to cross between them. Compare the documented clearance with your thickest rug, not the thinnest one. A robot that lifts only a small distance may still press a wet pad into a high-pile edge.
Choose carpet avoidance when keeping rugs dry matters most
Avoidance is appropriate when the consequences of moisture are greater than the benefit of vacuuming the rug during a mop run. The robot may leave that area uncleaned until you schedule a vacuum-only pass, so make sure the app supports separate routines if you need complete coverage.
Choose user-configurable modes when rooms differ
If one room has washable low-pile mats and another has delicate rugs, configurable modes can reduce compromise. Confirm whether the setting applies globally, per room, or per cleaning task. A global setting may be too aggressive for one floor and too cautious for another.
Common failure symptoms and practical fixes
The robot wets a rug
Stop the run, remove the damp pad, and dry the rug according to its care instructions. Check whether carpet detection was enabled, whether the selected mode was lift or avoid, and whether the rug edge was mapped correctly. Add a no-mop zone or barrier if the event repeats.

The robot refuses to cross a rug
The robot may be following an avoidance mode rather than malfunctioning. Review the room’s cleaning settings and run a vacuum-only task if the rug should be cleaned. If crossing is allowed but the robot stalls, inspect the edge, pile height, and threshold for a mechanical obstruction.

The robot detects a hard floor as carpet
Clean the relevant sensors as directed, check for a dark mat or glossy patch at the transition, and update the map if the room layout changed. Keep the conservative setting until a supervised test confirms correct behavior.
The robot hits cords or toys
Remove the objects before scheduled cleaning and establish a restricted zone around repeat trouble spots. An object-sensing claim does not guarantee recognition of every shape, material, or position.
The robot loses its route after furniture moves
Pause cleaning, return the robot to its dock, and remap or update the room layout using the app’s mapping tools. Do not rely on an old map to identify a rug that has been moved to a new location.
Questions to answer before purchase
- Does the exact model lift the mop, retract it above the robot, avoid carpet, or offer several modes?
- Is carpet detection automatic, and does the manual specify limits for pile height or rug edges?
- Can carpet behavior be set per room or per cleaning task?
- Can the robot vacuum a carpet while the mop is raised, or will it avoid the area entirely?
- What object-sensing and avoidance functions are documented for that exact model?
- Where is the model sold, and are the listed functions available in your country and app region?
- What maintenance schedule applies to pads, sensors, brushes, wheels, and the dock?
The useful buying phrase is “robot vacuum and mop combo with carpet detection,” but treat it as a starting point for checking specifications, not proof that any particular robot will keep every rug dry. The decisive details are the model’s documented response, the way its mop clears the surface, the quality of your map and restrictions, and a supervised test in your own rooms.
