Bitcoin held in a Robinhood Crypto account is held in custody by Robinhood, not in a wallet whose private keys you control. Robinhood says most customer crypto is kept in offline cold storage and some remains in online hot wallets for routine operations. It also says it believes customers are the legal owners of purchased crypto. Those are distinct points: Robinhood controls the keys to its corporate crypto addresses, while customers manage their holdings through the account service.
How Robinhood stores Bitcoin
For its US service, Robinhood describes a mix of hot and cold storage. Hot wallets are online and support routine operations; cold storage keeps keys offline. Robinhood says the majority of coins are in cold storage, but it does not publish a Bitcoin-specific percentage in the cited materials. Its crypto security help page describes the customer-facing approach, while its 2025 10-K/A discusses custody architecture, including hot and offline cold wallets, multi-party computation and hardware security.

These disclosures describe Robinhood’s stated practices; they are not a Bitcoin-by-Bitcoin proof of reserves or independent verification of wallet balances. They also do not establish that every coin is offline or that cold storage eliminates the risk of loss.
Do you own the Bitcoin, and who controls the keys?
Robinhood says it believes customers are the legal owners of crypto they purchase. Separately, its transfer documentation says Robinhood Crypto is custodial: Robinhood controls the private keys for its corporate addresses and does not give those keys to customers. You can direct transactions through your account, but you do not personally authorize them with the keys to those custodial addresses.
#1 Best Overall
- BITCOIN EXCLUSIVE, PHONE VERIFICATION: Bitkey is designed from the ground up exclusively for bitcoin — a dedicated hardware wallet for secure bitcoin storage. Approve transactions with a tap using your phone and NFC. No device screen is required.
- SELF-CUSTODY, NO EXCHANGE OR CUSTODIAN REQUIRED: You hold two of the three keys in the Bitkey system – one on your phone and one on your Bitkey device. The third is stored on Bitkey’s server and cannot move your bitcoin on its own.
- NO SEED PHRASE: Set up and use Bitkey without creating or storing a seed phrase.
- 2-of-3 MULTISIG: Three keys are stored separately across your phone, Bitkey device, and Bitkey’s server. Any two keys are required to move your bitcoin.
- BUILT-IN RECOVERY: Encrypted backup and recovery tools can help you regain access if you lose your phone or Bitkey device. You can also designate a Recovery Contact.
Ownership, account access and key control are not interchangeable. Robinhood’s statement about legal ownership is its own position, not a universal legal conclusion for every customer, jurisdiction or circumstance. Its disclosures here describe the US service; customers elsewhere should check the agreement for their Robinhood entity.
Robinhood Crypto versus self-custody
| Question | Robinhood Crypto | Self-custody wallet |
|---|---|---|
| Who controls the keys? | Robinhood says it controls the keys to its corporate addresses; customers do not receive them. | The wallet user controls the private keys. |
| Who authorizes transactions? | Transactions are initiated through the custodial account service. | The user authorizes transactions using the wallet’s keys. |
| Who handles recovery? | Account access and support are handled through the service. | The user must safeguard recovery credentials; Robinhood says it cannot recover lost Wallet keys or recovery phrases. |
| FDIC or SIPC protection? | Robinhood says crypto held through Robinhood Crypto is not FDIC insured or SIPC protected. | Robinhood says assets in self-custody wallets are also not FDIC insured or SIPC protected. |
Robinhood’s transfer guidance says eligible customers can send crypto to an external self-custody wallet. Robinhood Wallet is one option, but it is a separate product from Robinhood Crypto: its users hold their own keys, and Robinhood Crypto is not responsible for Wallet activity. More direct control therefore comes with responsibility for protecting keys and maintaining recovery access.

What Robinhood’s crime insurance does—and does not—mean
Robinhood says crime insurance protects a portion of assets in its storage systems against theft, including cybersecurity breaches, with underwriting by Lloyd’s syndicates. “A portion” is important: the statement does not promise coverage for every asset, balance, event or customer loss. This insurance statement is separate from deposit and securities protections; Robinhood says crypto holdings are not FDIC insured or SIPC protected.
Moving Bitcoin to a wallet you control
Transferring Bitcoin out of Robinhood changes custody: the receiving wallet’s keys, rather than Robinhood’s custodial keys, control the Bitcoin after the transaction completes. Robinhood describes the option this way: “If you want to secure your own crypto and have your own private keys, you can send your crypto to an external self-custody wallet, like Robinhood Wallet.” Check your account’s current transfer eligibility and instructions before sending.

- Choose and set up a wallet. Robinhood Wallet is a software option separate from Robinhood Crypto. A Bitcoin hardware wallet is another self-custody approach: Ledger describes its device as keeping keys offline and allowing the user to verify transactions on-device. That is the vendor’s description, not independent testing; a device alone does not move Bitcoin or guarantee safety.
- Back up recovery information securely. In self-custody, losing the keys or recovery credentials can mean losing access. Robinhood says its Wallet support cannot recover lost keys or recovery phrases. Do not treat a saved recovery phrase as ordinary account-password recovery.
- Use Robinhood’s crypto transfer flow. Follow the current in-app transfer instructions, choosing Bitcoin and entering the receiving wallet address carefully. Confirm that the selected asset and destination are compatible before approving a transaction.
- Verify the destination and completion. A completed transfer places the Bitcoin under the destination wallet’s key control. Retain the transaction details and confirm receipt in the wallet; do not assume that purchasing a wallet or initiating a transfer alone has changed custody.
What Robinhood’s disclosures do not establish
- They do not disclose a precise share of Bitcoin held in cold storage.
- They do not show that each customer has a separately identifiable on-chain coin or address; Robinhood describes corporate addresses and its filing describes omnibus custody and company records.
- They do not independently verify wallet balances, security testing or the legal outcome for an individual customer.
