The result depends on local competition, the deal’s operating plan, the official rewards terms, and decisions made for each restaurant site.
For a specific merger, treat prices, rewards accounts, and locations as three separate questions. A merger announcement by itself cannot confirm a price increase, a points change, or a closure.

What a restaurant merger actually changes
When two restaurant companies, brands, or franchise networks come under common ownership, decisions that were previously made independently may be coordinated. That can affect menu pricing, promotions, purchasing, staffing, formats, and which locations receive investment. It can also leave customer-facing operations largely unchanged if the buyer keeps the brands and franchise agreements separate.

The U.S. Department of Justice’s 2023 Merger Guidelines state: “A merger eliminates competition between the merging firms by bringing them under joint control.” That sentence describes the competitive mechanism, not a prediction about every transaction. If the two businesses did not compete closely in the same area, the practical effect on diners may be limited. If they operated nearby restaurants aimed at the same customers, the loss of one independent rival can matter more.

Why the same deal can affect towns differently
Restaurant markets are local. A merger may combine two competing locations in one trade area while having no overlap in another state. Authorities examine evidence such as how firms monitor one another’s prices, advertising, facilities, and locations. The relevant alternatives may include other national chains, regional brands, independents, supermarkets with prepared food, and delivery-only options.
The Federal Trade Commission says merger enforcement seeks to prevent deals likely to “reduce competition and lead to higher prices, lower quality goods or services, or less innovation.” This is an agency description of possible consumer harm, not a finding that a particular restaurant transaction will produce those results.
Will menu prices go up after a merger?
They can, but there is no established restaurant-wide average effect. A combined company may face less pressure to keep prices low or to maintain generous portions and discounts when a close rival disappears. It may also cut costs, standardize menus, add purchasing efficiencies, or invest in service, producing little price change or better value in some markets.

- The same entrée, combo, beverage, or family meal before and after the transaction.
- Mandatory service, delivery, packaging, or technology fees.
- Portion sizes and which side dishes or toppings are included.
- Advertised discounts, app-only offers, coupons, and member pricing.
- Taxes and delivery charges, which can vary independently of the menu price.
- Nearby alternatives that remain available after the deal.
A price change should not be attributed to a merger without deal-specific evidence. Restaurants also reprice because of food, labor, rent, delivery, supply-chain, tax, or franchising changes. Save dated menus, receipts, and screenshots if you need to establish what changed.
What the grocery-merger evidence does—and does not—show
An FTC study published in 2013 illustrates why merger effects cannot be reduced to a single rule. Among the grocery transactions it studied, five had estimated price increases greater than 2%, five had estimated decreases greater than 2%, and four showed relatively little change. Those figures concern grocery-retail mergers, not restaurant mergers, and should not be presented as a restaurant forecast.
| Evidence | What it can tell you | What it cannot establish |
|---|---|---|
| Two merging brands have nearby, overlapping restaurants | The deal may remove a direct local competitor and deserves closer price and service scrutiny. | That prices will rise, or by how much. |
| A new menu shows higher listed prices | Customers are paying more for the compared items at that location and date. | That the merger caused the increase without other supporting evidence. |
| A systemwide average or earnings statement | How the company reports its overall performance. | What a particular restaurant charges or whether its value improved. |
What happens to restaurant rewards points and benefits?
There is no standard rule that a merger automatically combines, preserves, expires, or cancels restaurant rewards. The outcome depends on the companies’ written transition plan and the terms in force on the relevant date.

A company may keep programs separate, create a shared program, migrate accounts, change earning rates, limit redemptions, or set a deadline for using existing rewards. It may also leave points unchanged while altering eligible menu items, coupon funding, status benefits, or the locations where rewards can be redeemed. None of those possibilities should be treated as the normal consequence of every merger.

How to verify your own account
- Read the official rewards terms and the program’s current FAQ, not only social-media summaries or news coverage.
- Check account notices, email messages, and in-app announcements for the transaction name and effective date.
- Confirm whether points can be earned and redeemed at both brands, only one brand, or only selected locations.
- Look for rules covering expiration, account migration, duplicate accounts, status matching, coupons, and a transition deadline.
- Capture your points balance, available certificates, and status before any announced change.
- Ask customer service a specific question and keep the response or case number if the published terms are unclear.
If no official change notice has been published, the accurate conclusion is “no confirmed change found.” That does not prove the terms can never change. Rewards policies can be revised separately from the merger announcement, so check again near the stated closing or migration date.
Will a local restaurant close or become a different brand?
An ownership change does not reveal the fate of an individual site. A company can keep a restaurant open, remodel it, transfer it to a franchisee, rebrand it, combine concepts in one building, temporarily close it, or permanently shut it. Lease terms, sales, cannibalization between nearby restaurants, labor availability, and the buyer’s format strategy all matter.
A company example: Dine Brands
Dine Brands’ fiscal-2025 SEC filing illustrates why location outcomes must be read at the site level. The company reported acquiring 47 Applebee’s restaurants in November 2024, 10 IHOP restaurants in March 2025, and 12 Applebee’s restaurants in May 2025. It reported those restaurants as company-owned and recorded acquisition-related closure costs. The filing also described dual-branded restaurants in which the IHOP and Applebee’s concepts operate under separate franchise agreements within one restaurant location.
Dine Brands’ fiscal-2025 release reported 40 new restaurant openings and 13 restaurant closures from Applebee’s and IHOP franchisee development activity in the fourth quarter of 2025. In results issued in August 2026, the company described continued dual-brand expansion as part of its growth strategy. These are examples of one company’s acquisitions and format decisions—not evidence that restaurant mergers generally cause closures, openings, or co-location.

How to check one address
- Search the exact address in the brand’s official restaurant locator.
- Check dated announcements from the company, franchisee, landlord, or local authority.
- Classify the status precisely: planned, temporarily closed, converted, sold, relocated, or permanently closed.
- Confirm the operating brand, hours, phone number, and ordering links after any remodeling or conversion.
- Do not infer a branch’s status from a national location count, a press release about another state, or the merger headline alone.
A practical way to assess a specific merger
Use the following sequence when you want a defensible answer about your prices, rewards, or nearby restaurant.
1. Identify the transaction
Determine whether the event is a corporate merger, an acquisition of a brand, a purchase of franchise locations, a change in franchisor, or a partnership. The legal and operating structure affects which customer terms can change. Record the announcement date, expected closing date, and the market or country involved.
2. Map local competition
List the two companies’ locations within the area where you actually dine and note close substitutes. A national overlap that does not exist in your town is less informative than two restaurants a few minutes apart. DOJ analysis treats direct competitive interaction and location evidence as relevant to merger review.

3. Build a dated value baseline
Save menus, receipts, reward offers, and portion information before and after the transaction. Compare equivalent items and include compulsory fees. Separate a single promotion from the regular price, and distinguish a brandwide change from a decision at one franchise.

4. Read the rewards transition language
Search the official terms for earning, redemption, expiration, account migration, status, coupons, and deadlines. If the companies have not addressed one of those points, mark it unresolved rather than guessing.
5. Verify the specific location
Use the official locator and dated local notices. A planned conversion is not the same as a temporary closure, and a company-owned acquisition is not the same as a permanently closed restaurant.
6. Escalate unclear changes
For a billing or rewards dispute, contact the program or restaurant with the transaction date, receipt, account email, and the exact term you relied on. For a suspected antitrust issue, consumer evidence is most useful when it identifies the overlapping locations, comparable prices, dates, and remaining alternatives.
How merger review relates to diners
U.S. antitrust agencies do not assume every restaurant deal has the same effect. They examine whether the transaction is likely to reduce competition in a defined market and whether evidence supports a harmful theory. Potential concerns can include higher prices, reduced quality, fewer services, weaker innovation, or diminished competition for workers and suppliers. The review process may lead to clearance, conditions, litigation, or abandonment, but an agency review outcome still does not determine the rewards balance or operating status of every restaurant.
Market definitions and legal standards differ outside the United States. A conclusion based on U.S. agency guidance should not be presented as a universal rule for Canada, the United Kingdom, the European Union, or another jurisdiction. Local competition authorities and local company notices control the facts for those markets.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Assuming “merger” means higher prices: the competitive risk is conditional, and restaurant-specific evidence is required.
- Using grocery figures as restaurant statistics: the FTC’s five-up, five-down, four-little-change figures came from grocery transactions studied in 2013.
- Expecting automatic rewards transfer: only current official terms and notices establish earning, redemption, expiration, or migration rules.
- Reading a systemwide closure count as a local answer: individual sites can be remodeled, converted, transferred, or closed for different reasons.
- Confusing a franchise acquisition with a corporate merger: buying restaurants or changing their ownership can produce different operational effects from combining two restaurant corporations.
- Ignoring dates: prices, rewards rules, ownership, and location listings can change between announcement, closing, and later integration.
Bottom line
A restaurant merger may weaken local price competition, alter value, change rewards rules, or reshape a nearby location, but the announcement alone proves none of those outcomes. Check overlapping restaurants and alternatives, compare dated menus and fees, read the official rewards transition terms, and verify the exact address through current company and local notices. Those steps provide a more reliable answer than assuming every merger raises prices, moves points, or closes stores.
