Researchers monitor reef health by combining daily satellite maps of ocean heat with local underwater instruments, water samples and diver observations. Satellites help show where heat stress is developing; field measurements and ecological surveys help determine what conditions are like at a reef and how its corals and wider community are responding.
How do researchers monitor coral reef health?
There is no single measurement that captures the full condition of a reef. NOAA’s National Coral Reef Monitoring Program (NCRMP) tracks thermal stress, ocean acidification and ecological indicators including coral growth, erosion and community structure. Each method answers a different question: satellite temperature products map heat patterns over broad areas, while instruments and fieldwork add local conditions and biological evidence.

NOAA describes NCRMP data collection as using “moored oceanographic and ecological instruments stationed at fixed points in the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans, water samples collected by divers, and satellite-based observations.” These observations are complementary rather than interchangeable: a satellite heat alert is not a direct survey of coral condition.
What do satellite reef-monitoring products measure?
NOAA Coral Reef Watch (CRW) produces daily global satellite products for coral-bleaching heat stress. Its suite includes sea-surface temperature (SST), SST anomaly, Coral Bleaching HotSpot, Degree Heating Weeks (DHW) and Bleaching Alert Area products. The products are used to identify unusually warm conditions and support early warning. NOAA’s products list and near-real-time portal provide the product index and monitoring overview.

CoralTemp and the temperature baseline
In its 5 km methodology, NOAA describes CoralTemp v3.1 as a daily global product at 5 km (0.05-degree) resolution. NOAA says this version was released August 1, 2018, combines three satellite SST datasets and spans January 1, 1985 to the present. Those details apply to CoralTemp v3.1; they should not be read as the release history or version number of every CRW product.
CoralTemp uses nighttime satellite observations to reduce the influence of daytime solar warming and solar glare. NOAA states that it measures nighttime ocean temperature at the surface, calibrated to 0.2 meters depth. In situ observations from drifting and moored buoys are also used operationally to help maintain satellite SST accuracy. The satellite provides broad coverage, while underwater instruments can document conditions at particular locations.

HotSpot and Degree Heating Weeks
CRW compares local SST with the Maximum Monthly Mean (MMM), the warmest of the 12 monthly mean climatologies for that location. A Coral Bleaching HotSpot expresses how far SST is above that baseline. A HotSpot of 1 °C is the threshold used in the heat-stress calculation.
Recommended Free Tools
DHW accumulates qualifying HotSpot stress—values at or above that threshold—over the preceding 12 weeks, expressing cumulative intensity and duration in °C-weeks. NOAA CRW’s 5 km methodology describes DHW above 4 °C-weeks as associated with significant bleaching, and above 8 °C-weeks as associated with severe bleaching and significant mortality. These are indicative relationships, not guarantees about the outcome at every reef or for every coral.

What do underwater instruments and field surveys add?
NOAA NCRMP uses moored oceanographic and ecological instruments at fixed locations, diver-collected water samples and satellite observations. NOAA’s Atlantic Oceanographic and Meteorological Laboratory (AOML) specifically identifies subsurface temperature recorders for in situ reef temperatures and bioerosion monitoring units for measuring bioerosion rates. NCRMP’s environmental monitoring description outlines its indicators and methods; AOML’s NCRMP page describes these instrument uses.
Subsurface recorders provide local temperature observations rather than a regional surface map. Water samples can support measurements of carbonate chemistry relevant to ocean acidification, while ecological observations address growth, erosion and community structure. These field measurements help interpret what a satellite heat signal may mean at a particular reef; the sources do not establish one universal sampling interval or survey protocol for all locations.

How often are NOAA reefs monitored?
NCRMP’s cadence is regional and applies to that program’s typical schedule, not to every reef-monitoring effort or every type of observation. NOAA reports a two-year cycle for Atlantic, Caribbean and Gulf of America locations, and a three-year cycle for Pacific Islands locations.

How do researchers put short-term heat in a longer context?
Daily heat-stress products show current conditions relative to a local baseline. CRW’s separate thermal-history products add longer-term context, including stress frequency, stress onset, SST variability, SST trends, climatology and annual history. NOAA’s thermal-history page lists version 3.7, released January 9, 2026, with a series covering 1985–2025. The version and date refer to that thermal-history product page, not to the entire CRW suite. See NOAA CRW Thermal History Products for its metrics and coverage.
