How Researchers Measure Magnetic Materials for Spintronic Devices

Researchers use several complementary methods because no single measurement captures every property that matters in a spintronic material. VSM and SQUID magnetometry measure magnetic moment and field-dependent response; MOKE tracks magnetization and reversal optically; ferromagnetic resonance (FMR) probes dynamic behavior; and domain imaging shows how magnetization is arranged in space. The right combination depends on the question, sample geometry, signal background, and whether the sample is a continuous film or a patterned device.

Start with the property you need to measure

Before choosing an instrument, researchers define the measurand: the specific property the experiment is intended to determine. A magnetization curve, coercivity, resonance linewidth, domain pattern, and device switching behavior are different questions, so they may require different techniques. NIST notes that properly characterizing a magnetic material requires measuring a wide range of characteristics; its characterization laboratory lists SQUID, VSM and VSM-SQUID magnetometry as well as magneto-optic imaging. Method What it measures or reveals Useful context and limits
VSM or SQUID magnetometry Magnetic moment and field-dependent magnetic response Bulk or sample-averaged measurement; thin-film results can be affected by the substrate’s magnetic contribution.
MOKE Optical measurement of magnetization and reversal behavior Can be used for magnetometry and microscopy; it provides a different view from a measurement of total moment.
FMR and related microwave or electrical methods Resonance behavior, including linewidth and dynamic properties Results depend on the measurement method and analysis; a continuous-film result may differ from a patterned-device result.
Magnetic-domain imaging Spatial arrangement of magnetic domains Imaging methods have sample and surface constraints and answer a spatial question rather than simply measuring total moment.

How the main measurement methods differ

VSM and SQUID: magnetic moment and field response

Vibrating-sample magnetometry (VSM) and superconducting quantum interference device (SQUID) magnetometry are used to measure magnetic moment. Sweeping the applied field produces a magnetic response curve that can be used to assess properties such as saturation magnetization and coercivity, subject to the measurement setup and analysis. An international comparison documented by the International Electrotechnical Commission examined magnetic-moment measurements made with VSM and SQUID instruments, with reproducibility as its focus. Thin films can produce a small magnetic signal on a comparatively large substrate background. In one NIST study, researchers measured a matched bare-substrate cleave to remove the substrate’s diamagnetic contribution before interpreting the film result. The study used VSM to measure magnetization versus applied field, determine saturation magnetization and identify easy and hard axes, alongside FMR and MOKE microscopy. This is an example of a study-specific workflow, not a universal sequence. NIST’s study of strain-assisted magnetization reversal in Co/Ni multilayers

NIST also reports a 0.1% relative standard deviation for a particular SQUID measurement procedure that rotates the sample rod through 360 degrees and uses the minimum angular measurement value. That is a procedure-specific reproducibility result, not a general accuracy or precision guarantee for SQUID measurements. NIST’s metrology of magnetic materials

MOKE: optical access to magnetization and reversal

The magneto-optic Kerr effect (MOKE) provides an optical way to measure magnetization and observe how it changes during reversal. Depending on the setup, it can be used for magnetometry or microscopy. NIST research on exchange anisotropy in NiFe films, for example, used MOKE magnetometry alongside FMR and Brillouin light scattering. NIST’s NiFe-film study

FMR: dynamic response and resonance linewidth

Ferromagnetic resonance measures a material’s response near magnetic resonance and is used to study dynamic properties, including linewidth and damping through method-specific analysis. NIST compared strip-line, vector-network-analyzer (VNA) and pulsed-inductive-microwave-magnetometry (PIMM) approaches for measuring FMR linewidth in Permalloy films. The methods produced consistent, compatible results for the investigated samples and conditions; that finding should not be assumed to apply to every material, instrument or protocol. Domain imaging: where the magnetic structure is

Domain imaging reveals spatial magnetic structure that a sample-averaged moment measurement cannot show. NIST’s chapter on magnetic-domain imaging for spintronic devices references methods including magnetic force microscopy (MFM), scanning electron microscopy with polarization analysis (SEMPA) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The appropriate method depends on the specimen and the constraints of the imaging technique. NIST’s overview of magnetic-domain imaging

Why a thin-film measurement may not predict device behavior

A continuous film and a patterned spintronic device are not interchangeable specimens. Patterning and local variation can change the measured response. In a study of magnetic tunnel junction thin films, NIST compared continuous-film and device-level FMR and found differences in effective magnetization and in some damping estimates. A film measurement can therefore characterize material behavior without, by itself, establishing how a working-size device will respond. NIST’s continuous-film versus device-level FMR study

Choose a method by matching the question to the sample

  1. State the target property. Decide whether you need magnetic moment or a field-dependent curve, coercivity, anisotropy, resonance linewidth or damping, domain structure, or device switching behavior.
  2. Match the sample scale and geometry. A bulk specimen, continuous thin film, multilayer, patterned device and local domain present different measurement problems. If device behavior is the goal, include device-level measurements where appropriate rather than relying only on an unpatterned film.
  3. Assess signal and background. For a thin film, determine whether the substrate contribution is significant and whether an appropriate background measurement or subtraction is needed.
  4. Decide whether spatial information matters. Magnetometry measures magnetic response across the sample; imaging is needed to examine how domains are arranged locally.
  5. Set the conditions needed to answer the question. Record applied-field direction and range, frequency, temperature, sample orientation and calibration. These conditions affect what a result means and whether it can be compared with another measurement.
  6. Compare like with like. Account for calibration, uncertainty, geometry and analysis model. Agreement between methods in a particular study supports comparability only within the materials and conditions that were tested.

Use coercivity standards only within their stated scope

IEC 60404-7:2019 specifies a method for measuring coercivity in an open magnetic circuit for materials with coercivity from 0.2 A/m to 160 kA/m. That range describes the standard’s stated scope; it is not a general performance range for spintronic materials, nor does the standard establish a universal protocol for thin films or patterned devices. Check the complete, current standard and confirm that its specimen and method apply before claiming compliance. IEC 60404-7:2019
