How Researchers Confirmed a Rare Iodine–Silver Bond

An international team has isolated a molecular complex containing two iodine(I)–silver(I) coordination bonds—an interaction rarely demonstrated as a true bond rather than a distant contact. X-ray crystallography measured each iodine–silver separation at 2.86 Å, well inside the 3.54 Å sum of the ions’ van der Waals radii, while computational analysis indicated substantial covalent character. The result is a carefully defined structural example, not yet a practical technology or a general rule for every iodine–silver interaction.

What was discovered

The study reported in 2025 describes a discrete complex in which iodine(I) centers coordinate directly to silver(I) centers. There are two iodine–silver coordination bonds in the isolated structure. That wording matters: the work does not merely identify iodine and silver atoms in the same crystal. It presents a geometry and electronic analysis consistent with a specific, directed interaction between the two elements.

Why an iodine–silver bond is unusual

Iodine and silver can be found near one another in many coordination compounds, but proximity alone does not establish a chemical bond. In a crystal, atoms may approach because of packing forces, electrostatic attraction or a larger network of ligands. A convincing assignment of a direct bond normally combines a short, chemically plausible distance with an electronic explanation for why the atoms interact.

The unusual feature here is that iodine(I), a relatively soft and polarizable center, is shown engaging silver(I) in a defined coordination contact. The authors interpret the interaction as having significant covalent character: electron density is donated from iodine(I) toward silver(I). That interpretation goes beyond labeling the contact as a purely electrostatic attraction, while still applying specifically to this molecular environment.

How the complex is assembled

1. Building a polymeric silver precursor

The reported preparation begins by combining silver triflate with pyridine N-oxide. This produces a polymeric silver compound, meaning that silver centers are linked through repeating ligand interactions rather than existing only as isolated molecules.

2. Introducing iodine

The silver precursor is then reacted with iodine. The resulting product reorganizes the coordination environment into the iodine–silver complex observed in the crystal. The available account does not specify quantities, solvent, temperature, reaction time or isolation yield, so those details should not be inferred from the structural summary.

3. Forming the silver paddlewheel

Four bidentate triflate ions bridge two silver cations. This creates a paddlewheel arrangement: the two silver atoms occupy the central pair of positions, while bridging ligands span between them around the outside. The paddlewheel is the supporting framework that holds the metal centers in the orientation needed for the iodine interactions.

4. Positioning iodine and pyridine ligands

Each iodine(I) center belongs to a three-centre-four-electron unit involving two pyridine ligands. In addition, each iodine center forms one coordination bond oriented approximately orthogonally to a silver cation. Together, the two iodine centers account for the two iodine(I)–silver(I) bonds in the reported molecule.

Structural element Role in the reported complex
Iodine(I) centers Each makes one iodine–silver coordination bond and participates in a three-centre-four-electron unit with two pyridine ligands.
Silver(I) centers Two silver cations form the central pair of a triflate-bridged paddlewheel and accept electron density from iodine(I).
Triflate ions Four bidentate triflates bridge the two silver cations, stabilizing the paddlewheel framework.
Pyridine ligands Two ligands around each iodine(I) center create the three-centre-four-electron arrangement described in the report.
Pyridine N-oxide Used in making the silver precursor; the report says these ligands increase electron density around iodine in the final coordination environment.

What the X-ray structure shows

Single-crystal X-ray crystallography gave an iodine–silver separation of 2.86 Å. The Chemistry World account compares this with 3.54 Å, the sum of the van der Waals radii used for the two ions. A separation substantially shorter than that nonbonded-contact benchmark is consistent with the atoms being held together more tightly than ordinary surface contact.

The same report notes that the distance is similar to typical single metal–metal bonds. This comparison is useful as a scale reference, not as proof by itself. Bond lengths vary with oxidation state, coordination number, ligand environment and crystal packing. A short distance can support a bonding assignment, but it cannot reveal how much electron sharing is present.

Evidence type Reported result What it establishes
Crystallographic geometry Iodine–silver separation of 2.86 Å The atoms occupy a short, reproducible position in the crystal structure.
Van der Waals comparison 3.54 Å combined radius value cited for the ions The observed separation is substantially shorter than the report’s nonbonded-contact reference.
Electronic-structure analysis Significant covalent character, with electron donation from iodine(I) toward silver(I) The interaction is interpreted as involving orbital/electron-density sharing, not distance alone.

Why distance and computation must be considered together

The crystallographic measurement and the computational analysis answer different questions. X-ray diffraction determines where the nuclei are located in the solid and therefore provides the 2.86 Å separation. It does not, by itself, assign a bond order or quantify covalency. Calculations model the electron distribution and can test whether an iodine-to-silver donor interaction is chemically plausible in the observed geometry.

In this case, the two evidence streams reinforce one another. The short separation places iodine and silver unusually close, and the calculations are reported to show appreciable electron donation from iodine(I) into silver(I). The authors therefore describe the contact as a coordination bond with significant covalent character. That is an interpretation of this complex’s structure and electronic environment, not a universal reclassification of every iodine–silver contact.

The role of the ligand environment

Coordination chemistry is highly dependent on the ligands surrounding a metal or main-group center. Pyridine N-oxide is reported to increase electron density around iodine in this system. A more electron-rich iodine(I) center can be a better donor toward an accepting silver(I) site, helping make the unusual interaction observable.

The two pyridine ligands also matter geometrically. Their three-centre-four-electron arrangement around iodine establishes a directional framework, while the iodine–silver bond projects approximately orthogonally from it. The silver paddlewheel supplies a complementary, preorganized pair of acceptor sites. The bond is therefore a product of the entire ligand architecture rather than an isolated property of iodine and silver atoms considered in a vacuum.

What “coordination bond” means here

A coordination bond is commonly described as an interaction in which one partner donates an electron pair to an acceptor. Real bonds often fall on a continuum: electrostatic attraction, donor–acceptor coordination and covalent sharing can all contribute. The reported iodine–silver contact is best understood on that continuum.

Calling it a coordination bond does not mean it is identical to a conventional two-electron covalent bond between neutral atoms. Nor does “significant covalent character” imply that the interaction has a universally fixed bond order. The useful, evidence-based statement is narrower: in the measured complex, the geometry and calculations support a directed iodine(I)→silver(I) interaction with appreciable electron sharing.

What the discovery changes for coordination chemistry

It expands the set of demonstrated bonding motifs

Coordination chemists can now point to a structurally characterized example in which iodine(I) is directly coordinated to silver(I) inside a deliberately organized framework. Such examples help test bonding models and broaden the types of main-group/transition-metal interactions that can be designed.

It highlights preorganization as a design strategy

The compound does not rely on a single ligand or a single metal center. Triflate bridges create the silver paddlewheel, pyridine ligands define the iodine geometry, and the electron-rich environment favors donation toward silver. This suggests a practical design principle for future work: unusual bonds may become accessible when several ligands cooperate to control both distance and electron density.

It offers a platform for testing related systems

The researchers’ stated next direction is to investigate other metals and ligand systems. Varying the metal could reveal whether similar iodine(I)-to-metal interactions occur with different acceptor properties. Changing the ligands could tune iodine’s electron density, alter the three-centre-four-electron arrangement or force a different geometry. These are proposed avenues for exploration, not results demonstrated by the present report.

What has not been demonstrated

  • The study does not establish that all iodine–silver contacts are covalent or even bonded.
  • It does not provide a general rule that iodine(I) will coordinate strongly to arbitrary metals.
  • It does not report a commercial, catalytic, electronic or medicinal application for the complex.
  • It does not show that the compound is a practical precursor for a larger class of materials.
  • It does not replace the need to examine each new structure with both geometric and electronic evidence.

The significance is therefore foundational. The work characterizes one unusual complex and supplies a model for asking whether related compounds can be made. Any claim about broad utility, improved performance or an application would require separate experiments.

How to evaluate a claimed unusual bond

  1. Check the measured geometry. Look for a crystallographic distance and compare it with an appropriate nonbonded reference, while accounting for the coordination environment.
  2. Identify the complete ligand framework. Determine which ligands hold the atoms in place and whether the proposed bond is part of a larger motif such as the triflate-bridged paddlewheel here.
  3. Separate structure from electronics. A short distance is structural evidence; orbital or electron-density calculations address covalent character. Neither measurement substitutes for the other.
  4. Ask whether the analysis is system-specific. Bonding conclusions depend on oxidation states, ligands, geometry and computational method. A conclusion for one complex should not be generalized without comparative data.
  5. Look for independent chemical behavior. In future studies, reactivity, spectroscopy or systematic ligand substitutions could test whether the interaction persists outside the original crystal.

Why the 2.86 Å number should be read carefully

The reported 2.86 Å value is a structure-specific measurement from X-ray crystallography. It is not a universal iodine–silver bond length, a guaranteed value in solution or a performance specification. Crystal structures can be influenced by packing, temperature, disorder and the way atoms are modeled, so the surrounding experimental details matter when comparing it with other compounds.

Likewise, 3.54 Å is the sum of van der Waals radii cited by the report for comparison. Van der Waals radii are reference values, not hard boundaries: atoms can be closer without forming a conventional bond, and bonding interactions can vary continuously. The strength of the present claim comes from combining the unusually short separation with the reported electronic analysis and the chemically coherent ligand arrangement.

Where the work could lead next

Future studies could vary one part of the architecture at a time. Replacing silver with another metal would test how the acceptor’s size, softness and electron affinity influence iodine coordination. Substituting ligands could alter iodine’s electron density or change the angle between the iodine coordination unit and the metal site. Comparing those families would help distinguish effects caused by the metal from effects caused by the supporting ligands.

Researchers may also examine whether analogous contacts survive in solution, whether they exchange ligands, and whether they participate in controlled reactions. Those questions are important because a crystal structure proves that the arrangement exists in the solid; it does not automatically show how long it persists under other conditions. The current report establishes the structural starting point for that program.

Bottom line

The unusual iodine–silver interaction is credible because two independent observations point in the same direction: X-ray crystallography places iodine(I) and silver(I) just 2.86 Å apart, shorter than the 3.54 Å van der Waals-radius sum cited for the ions, and computational analysis indicates substantial iodine-to-silver electron donation. The compound’s four triflate bridges, silver paddlewheel and pyridine-based iodine environments are essential parts of the explanation. The discovery broadens coordination-chemistry design space, but practical applications and general rules for other metals remain open questions.
