How Researchers Built Organic Electronic Circuits in Living Roses

In a 2015 laboratory demonstration, researchers used parts of living plants to make organic electronic devices: rose xylem served as a template for conductive polymer wires, while polymer-containing leaf regions changed color when voltage was applied. These were proof-of-concept circuits, not electronics found in ordinary garden roses or products available to consumers.

How plant structures became part of the electronics

Plants already move water and ions through specialized tissues and generate electrical signals. In the study, researchers treated structures including xylem, leaves and veins—and signals within the plant—as templates and integral components of electronic circuits. The work used organic electronic materials, which can couple electronic and ionic signals, a property relevant to interfacing electronics with biological systems.

Stavrinidou and colleagues described their work as “analog and digital organic electronic circuits and devices manufactured in living plants.” The paper, “Electronic plants,” published in Science Advances on 20 November 2015, reports experimental devices rather than a practical rose-growing method.

What the researchers demonstrated in roses

Conductive pathways in the xylem

In the rose experiment reported by Chemistry World, a cut rose absorbed an aqueous solution containing a PEDOT variant through its xylem, the tissue that transports water. Polymerization formed conductive material in the plant’s vascular channels. Chemistry World’s 2015 report describes conductive wires up to 10 cm long. That figure refers to experimental wires in this demonstration, not a product specification.

Transistor-like logic

The report also describes organic electrochemical transistor structures formed in the rose, with logic-gate functionality. In other words, the experiment went beyond making a conductive path: it showed a plant-based structure participating in circuit behavior. The available account establishes a laboratory demonstration, not a general-purpose computer or a device ready for everyday use.

Color-changing regions in leaves

For the leaf demonstration, researchers infiltrated leaves with a PEDOT variant and cellulose nanofibres. Applying voltage changed the color of polymer-containing regions, an electrochromic effect. This showed a second way plant tissue could participate in an electronic device, distinct from the conductive pathways and transistor-like structures in stems.

What the experiment does—and does not—establish

The demonstrated result is that living plant structures can be incorporated into organic electronic devices and circuits under experimental conditions. It does not establish that ordinary cultivated roses contain electronics, that the technique is a gardening practice, or that the devices are commercially available.

The researchers proposed broader possibilities, including precision recording and regulation of plant physiology, harvesting energy from photosynthesis, and alternatives to genetic modification for plant optimization. They presented these as applications one could envisage, not as functions already delivered by the rose circuits. The paper’s abstract states: “With integrated and distributed electronics in plants, one can envisage a range of applications including precision recording and regulation of physiology, energy harvesting from photosynthesis, and alternatives to genetic modification for plant optimization.”

Why the result matters

The significance is the shift in how a circuit can be conceived: plant tissues need not be merely objects being measured; in this work, their structures and signals could serve as components of organic electronics. The study offers a proof of concept for interfacing electronic and biological processes, while leaving the proposed monitoring, regulation and energy-harvesting uses as future possibilities rather than demonstrated consumer applications.
