Redshift tells astronomers how much a galaxy’s light has been stretched, which helps estimate its distance and apparent recession and shows how far back in cosmic history we are looking. It does not directly give a galaxy’s formation age. In the distant universe, the dominant cause is the expansion of space: as light travels, its wavelength lengthens.
By measuring identifiable spectral features, comparing their observed wavelengths with laboratory rest wavelengths, and interpreting the result with a cosmological model, astronomers can connect a spectrum to distance, lookback time and the universe’s expansion. That chain of evidence answers four common questions: how redshift is measured, how it relates to motion, how it indicates distance, and how telescopes see galaxies as they were billions of years ago.

What redshift is—and what it is not
Light from a galaxy contains a range of wavelengths. When those wavelengths are spread into a spectrum, atoms and molecules leave recognizable fingerprints: bright emission lines, dark absorption lines and broad spectral breaks. Each feature has a known rest-frame wavelength measured in the laboratory or established from nearby astronomical sources.
If a feature arrives at a longer wavelength than its rest value, it is redshifted. A shorter observed wavelength is a blueshift. Astronomers conventionally express the shift as z = (λobserved − λemitted) / λemitted. A positive value means the received wavelength is longer than the emitted wavelength. The same calculation works whether the feature is an individual line or a recognizable break in a galaxy’s spectrum.

Why a spectrum is more informative than a color alone
A camera records brightness through broad filters. Combining those measurements produces colors that can identify promising high-redshift candidates, but a color does not uniquely identify a redshift. NASA notes that dusty galaxies at redshifts below 5 and cool stars in the Milky Way can mimic the colors expected from very distant galaxies. Spectroscopy resolves the wavelength-dependent features needed to test the candidate directly.
This does not make multi-filter imaging useless. Imaging can survey a large area efficiently and select objects for follow-up. Spectroscopy supplies the sharper measurement when the scientific question requires a secure distance or a physical interpretation of the light.
How astronomers measure a galaxy’s redshift
1. Collect the galaxy’s light
A telescope gathers the faint light and sends it to an instrument that separates wavelengths. The result is a spectrum: intensity plotted against wavelength. For very distant galaxies, the light may be shifted from visible wavelengths into the infrared, so infrared-sensitive detectors are essential for studying the earliest systems.
2. Identify a known feature
Researchers look for a pattern whose rest wavelength is known. Depending on the galaxy and its distance, that may be an emission line from ionized gas, an absorption line from stars, or a broad spectral break caused by the way hydrogen absorbs shorter-wavelength light. Several features provide a stronger identification than a single tentative line.

3. Compare observed and rest wavelengths
Suppose a feature normally emitted at 500 nanometers is measured at 1,000 nanometers. The redshift is (1,000 − 500) / 500 = 1, or z = 1. The calculation is simple; deciding which feature has been observed is often the difficult part, especially when the signal is faint or only one line is visible.
4. Check the identification and uncertainty
A reliable redshift analysis tests whether multiple lines occur at the relative spacings expected for the proposed identification. It also records the measurement uncertainty, signal-to-noise ratio and any alternative interpretation. A photometric redshift inferred from colors should be labeled as an estimate until spectroscopy confirms it.
How does redshift tell us how far away a galaxy is?
Redshift and distance are linked because light travels through an expanding universe. While the light is in transit, the space between large-scale structures expands and stretches the wave. The amount of stretching records information about the expansion history, so a measured redshift can be converted into a distance within a specified cosmological model.

Expansion of space versus ordinary motion
It is common to say that a redshifted galaxy is “moving away.” That wording is a useful shorthand for its increasing distance, but it can be misleading if taken literally. For cosmological distances, NASA identifies expansion of space as the primary explanation rather than a galaxy flying through otherwise static space. Galaxies also have local, or peculiar, motions caused by gravity. Those motions can add a smaller Doppler component, particularly for nearby objects, but they do not replace the expansion explanation for the distant universe.

The small-distance Hubble-law picture
At relatively small distances, the relationship can be introduced with the simplified Hubble law, v = H × d, where v is recession speed, d is distance and H is the Hubble parameter used for the calculation. NASA presents this as a straight-line relation at small distances. It is a useful first picture, not an exact rule for assigning an ordinary speed to every arbitrary redshift.
At larger redshifts, astronomers use a cosmological model that includes the expansion history and the contents of the universe. The resulting quantity may be a light-travel distance, comoving distance, luminosity distance or another defined measure. These distances are not interchangeable, so a scientific result should state which definition and model it uses.
How can we see galaxies as they were billions of years ago?
Light has a finite speed. A galaxy one billion light-years away is seen through light that left it roughly one billion years ago, subject to the precise cosmological definition of distance. Greater redshift generally corresponds to a larger lookback time: the telescope receives older light from an earlier stage of cosmic history.
NASA describes this as “looking back in time.” Its timeline gives illustrative model-based examples: at z = 1, the universe was about 5.9 billion years old; at z = 3, about 2.2 billion years old; at z = 6, about 942 million years old; and at z = 9, about 551 million years old. The universe is about 13.8 billion years old according to NASA. These values are conversions within a cosmological model, not measurements that are independent of the model.

| Redshift | Illustrative universe age when the light was emitted | What the observation represents |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | About 5.9 billion years | An intermediate lookback into cosmic history |
| 3 | About 2.2 billion years | A much earlier era of galaxy growth |
| 6 | About 942 million years | The young universe, less than a billion years after its beginning |
| 9 | About 551 million years | An extremely early period in the first billion years |
These timeline pairs are published examples from NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center Scientific Visualization Studio. They tell you the approximate age of the universe at emission, not the age of the individual galaxy.
Lookback time is not a galaxy’s formation age
A galaxy observed at high redshift may already contain stars that formed earlier, and the galaxy may have assembled through mergers over an extended period. Redshift alone therefore cannot say, “this galaxy is exactly 500 million years old.” Astronomers estimate stellar ages, star-formation histories and assembly times from additional spectral and photometric evidence, always within model assumptions.
NASA’s description captures the practical idea: “In astronomy, the closest we get to operating a time machine is using telescopes to look at light traveling across the universe,” said Redshift Wrangler project lead Dr. Jeyhan Kartaltepe. The telescope is not viewing a live feed delayed by a simple fixed number; it is receiving an ancient signal whose travel and stretching are interpreted together.
Spectroscopy and multi-filter imaging: two complementary approaches
| Method | What it measures | Strength | Main limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Spectroscopy | Resolved intensity as a function of wavelength, including lines and breaks | Can establish a redshift from identifiable features and reveal physical conditions | Requires enough photons and usually more observing time; faint objects can produce ambiguous features |
| Multi-filter imaging | Broad-band brightnesses and colors | Efficiently surveys large fields and flags likely high-redshift candidates | Different objects can share similar colors; dusty lower-redshift galaxies and cool foreground stars are documented lookalikes |
In practice, imaging often comes first. A survey marks candidates whose colors suggest that a spectral break has moved into a particular filter. Follow-up spectroscopy then tests whether the break or line occurs where the proposed redshift requires it. Treating a color-based estimate and a spectroscopic measurement as the same kind of evidence hides an important uncertainty.

What redshift reveals about motion
Once a redshift is measured and interpreted in a cosmological model, astronomers can estimate how rapidly the universe was expanding when the light traveled and how the galaxy’s distance changes with cosmic time. The phrase “apparent recession” is deliberate: at cosmological scales, recession is defined by the evolving geometry of space, not simply by a conventional speed through a fixed background.
Nearby galaxies need extra care
For a nearby galaxy, gravitationally driven peculiar velocity can be a substantial fraction of the measured redshift. A galaxy in a group or cluster may be moving toward or away from the group’s center while the universe expands. Distance indicators such as variable stars, supernovae or surface-brightness methods can help separate local motion from the larger expansion pattern.
Very high redshift needs relativistic cosmology
At high redshift, inserting a value into a nonrelativistic velocity formula can produce a misleading number. Researchers instead report redshift itself and derive distances, lookback time and expansion parameters using a stated cosmological model. The redshift remains the directly measured quantity; the distance and time are inferred quantities.
Why infrared observations matter for the earliest galaxies
Cosmic expansion shifts ultraviolet and visible light emitted by young galaxies toward longer wavelengths by the time it reaches Earth. NASA notes that infrared detectors allow telescopes to receive light from early galaxies. Infrared sensitivity therefore does more than improve image quality: it determines whether key features remain within an instrument’s usable range.
Longer wavelengths can also pass through some dust more effectively than shorter wavelengths, helping astronomers study obscured star formation. Dust does not disappear as a source of uncertainty, however. It can alter broad-band colors and complicate photometric selection, which is another reason spectroscopy is valuable when a precise redshift matters.
Common misunderstandings and how to avoid them
- “Redshift is the galaxy’s age.” No. It is a wavelength-shift measurement. Cosmic age at emission and lookback time are model-derived, while a galaxy’s own stellar age requires separate analysis.
- “Every redshift is just Doppler motion.” No. For distant galaxies, expansion of space is the primary interpretation; local peculiar motion can be superimposed.
- “A red color proves high redshift.” No. Dusty lower-redshift galaxies and cool Milky Way stars can mimic the colors of high-redshift candidates.
- “One formula gives an exact speed at any redshift.” No. The small-distance relation
v = H × dis an introductory approximation. High-redshift distances and times require a cosmological model. - “A farther galaxy is being seen as it is now.” No. Its light left earlier, so the observation is a view of its past state.
A practical reading guide for redshift claims
- Find out how the redshift was obtained. Look for a spectroscopic line or break, or for a photometric estimate based on filter colors.
- Check the feature identification. Multiple consistent features are more secure than a single weak line.
- Separate measured and inferred quantities. Redshift is measured from wavelengths; distance, recession interpretation and lookback time come from cosmology.
- Note the redshift regime. Nearby objects may be strongly affected by peculiar velocities, while distant objects require a full expansion model.
- Ask what “age” means. It may refer to the universe’s age when the light was emitted, the lookback time, or an estimated stellar population age. Those are different quantities.
NASA summarizes the value of the method with another line from Kartaltepe: “A spectrum is worth a thousand pictures.” The point is not that images lack information, but that resolved wavelength features can turn a plausible candidate into a measured place in cosmic history.
