How recovered aircraft wrecks are conserved after being raised

Raising an aircraft wreck is the beginning of conservation, not the end. Once the aircraft leaves the water or soil, specialists document it, keep its materials in a controlled condition, remove soluble salts, clean and treat corrosion where justified, then stabilize and monitor it for storage or display.

The sequence is never a universal restoration recipe. A submerged aircraft may contain aluminum, steel, coatings, rubber, acrylic, fabric and biological deposits, all altered differently by water, sediment and contact with dissimilar metals. The treatment plan must match those materials, the wreck’s condition, the intended outcome and the legal and ethical circumstances of the recovery.

Conservation begins before the aircraft is lifted

A responsible project starts with a decision about whether recovery is justified and can be supported after the lift. Archaeologists and conservators first establish the aircraft’s identity, site history and physical condition. They map the wreck, record its position and orientation, study surrounding sediments and assess biological and electrochemical processes that may be affecting it.

The Western Australian Museum’s aviation-archaeology guidance calls for pre-disturbance physical, biological and electrochemical study. Sediment matters because it can protect metal from oxygen, trap salts, support corrosion cells or conceal fragile components. Disturbing that environment without a plan can accelerate damage before the aircraft reaches a laboratory.

Planning also covers the engineering of the lift, emergency treatment, transport, staffing, permissions, funding and a permanent home. The Naval History and Heritage Command (NHHC) warns that excavation should not proceed without full funding and suitable curation space. A wreck that can be raised but cannot be treated and housed may be better documented in place.

What the pre-recovery record includes

  • Photographs, measured drawings, video, a site map and a record of the aircraft’s position.
  • Identification of airframe materials, coatings, fasteners, wiring, rubber, acrylic and other components where possible.
  • Observations of corrosion, cracking, deformation, biological growth, sediment cover and areas at risk of collapse.
  • Samples or non-destructive examinations that help specialists understand salts, alloys and corrosion products.
  • A recovery design that supports the aircraft without pulling fragile sections apart.
  • A written treatment objective, schedule, budget and storage or display plan.

What happens immediately after recovery

The first priority is to prevent a sudden change in the environment from causing more loss. Wet marine artifacts are often kept wet during initial handling because drying can shrink, crack or deform some materials and can concentrate salts inside porous corrosion layers. The correct humidity or water storage is object-specific; there is no safe, one-size-fits-all tank formula for every aircraft.

Recovery crews use lifting frames, slings, cradles or other supports designed around the wreck’s remaining strength. The aircraft may be structurally incomplete, so a point load that would be harmless on an intact airframe can tear a corroded skin panel or separate a joint. Conservators, archaeologists, engineers and rigging specialists coordinate the move from the recovery site to a treatment facility.

The Sallenelles Spitfire illustrates why interim conditions are chosen case by case. After recovery, the wreck was returned to the water in Caen docks and kept in a humid environment during transport before conservation. Temporary re-immersion or high humidity can be appropriate when it prevents uncontrolled drying while a treatment facility is prepared; it is not a general instruction for every aircraft.

Assessment turns a wreck into a treatment plan

At the facility, the team creates a detailed condition record before aggressive cleaning or disassembly. Conservators photograph every accessible surface, measure components, label parts and document losses, cracks, deformation, coatings and deposits. They may use microscopy, alloy analysis, radiography, conductivity or other non-destructive examinations to determine what is original, what is corrosion and what is later material.

This assessment is essential because a wreck is a mixed-material archaeological object rather than a conventional restoration project. Aluminum can corrode differently from steel; fasteners can create galvanic couples; rubber can harden or swell; acrylic can craze; paint can conceal active corrosion. Treatment that improves one material may damage another, so the team records interactions and tests proposed methods on representative areas before applying them broadly.

Why marine corrosion is difficult

Seawater introduces chloride and other soluble salts into corrosion layers, joints and porous deposits. Chlorides can continue to attract moisture and promote pitting after the aircraft is removed from the sea. Crevices and contacts between dissimilar metals can become localized corrosion sites. A Smithsonian aircraft-conservation case identified chloride-related pitting, crevice corrosion and galvanic corrosion, demonstrating why apparently sound panels may contain serious hidden damage.

Conservators therefore distinguish between stable surface alteration, active corrosion, structurally dangerous corrosion and deposits that are archaeologically significant. They do not automatically polish every surface or strip every coating. The original surface, later repairs, impact evidence and traces of use may all be part of the object’s history.

Desalination removes the salts that keep corrosion active

For long-submerged marine material, desalination is a central early operation. NHHC states: “Artifacts submerged for longer periods in marine environments must first undergo desalination.” The process removes soluble salts from the object before later drying or protective treatment.

Desalination is controlled rather than a single rinse. The object is placed in a treatment environment selected for its materials and condition, and the solution is monitored for evidence that salts are leaving the artifact. Water changes, duration, temperature, agitation and other controls depend on the object and the conservation plan. A large, fragile airframe may require a different approach from a small metal fitting.

Conservators continue recording condition during desalination. Cracks can open, coatings can detach and corrosion products can soften. Any change may require altering the treatment rate or isolating a component. The aim is not merely to make the water clear; it is to reduce soluble contaminants without washing away evidence or damaging vulnerable materials.

Cleaning and corrosion treatment are selective

After or alongside desalination, specialists remove deposits that obscure the aircraft, retain moisture or threaten the materials. Cleaning can involve controlled mechanical methods, carefully selected aqueous treatment or other professional techniques. The method is chosen after testing because aggressive tools, chemicals or pressure can remove original paint, markings and thin metal.

The Smithsonian case records removal of an earlier coating and water cleaning as part of a particular treatment. That record is evidence of what was done to one aircraft under its own conditions, not a recipe for another wreck. Corrosion products may be reduced, stabilized or left in place when removal would destroy historically important material or weaken the structure.

Additional chemical treatment may be used where analysis shows it is warranted. Conservators document the product, concentration, area and reason for use, then evaluate whether corrosion has slowed. Consumer corrosion chemicals, household cleaners and improvised electrolytic baths are unsuitable substitutes: the wrong treatment can drive salts deeper, release hazardous residues or erase evidence.

Controlled drying, protection and long-term curation

When wet treatment is complete, drying is controlled to suit the remaining materials. Sudden drying can cause differential shrinkage, cracking or salt crystallization. Conservators may lower humidity gradually, support weak sections and continue checking for movement, flaking or renewed corrosion.

Some metal surfaces receive a protective coating after cleaning and desalination, but coating selection depends on the alloy, the intended environment, reversibility, appearance and future access for inspection. A coating that seals a surface can also trap moisture if the object was not adequately desalinated or dried. Other components may be left uncoated so they can be monitored or because a coating would alter significant evidence.

Final work includes analysis, treatment records, photography and, in some projects, three-dimensional scanning. These records preserve information that may be lost as fragile material changes and allow future conservators to compare the object’s condition with its post-treatment baseline.

Storage and display conditions

  • Stable temperature and relative humidity appropriate to the aircraft’s mixed materials.
  • Supports that distribute weight and prevent distortion of weakened structures.
  • Low exposure to pollutants, dust, ultraviolet light and condensation.
  • Access for periodic inspection of joints, cavities, coatings and corrosion-prone areas.
  • Handling rules, emergency procedures and a record of every intervention.

Conservation does not end when the aircraft is installed in a gallery. Monitoring is part of the treatment because corrosion can resume, coatings can age and supports can shift.

Stabilization is not the same as restoration to flight

The project must define its objective before treatment choices are made. A museum may aim to stabilize the wreck against further loss, preserve it as an unaltered archaeological object, present selected evidence of its history or reconstruct missing elements for interpretation. Returning an aircraft to flying condition is a different engineering and ethical undertaking from conserving a wreck.

The Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum describes treatment objectives that can include stabilizing an aircraft or preserving it in an unaltered condition. Those choices determine whether missing parts are replaced, whether later coatings are removed, how much corrosion is taken away and how prominently repairs are shown. A conservation team normally includes conservators, curators, historians, scientists, engineers, registrars and, where human remains are involved, appropriate authorities and specialists.

Time, cost and facilities vary by project

There is no reliable general price or standard duration for conserving a raised aircraft wreck. NHHC describes the work as time-consuming and expensive but does not publish a typical project cost. Size, structural condition, salt load, materials, treatment technology, labor, transport, legal obligations and the availability of a suitable facility all change the estimate.

The Dornier Do 17 raised from Goodwin Sands in June 2013 provides one announced schedule: the UK Ministry of Defence said a two-year restoration would take place at the RAF Museum conservation centre in Cosford. That was the plan for that aircraft, not a benchmark for all wrecks and not proof that every project reaches a display-ready state in two years.

Case or guidance What it shows Qualification
NHHC underwater-archaeology program Inventory includes over 3,000 shipwrecks and 17,000 aircraft wrecks dispersed around the world. These are Navy submerged-cultural-resource inventory figures, not counts of recovered aircraft; accessed 2026.

Sallenelles Spitfire Returned temporarily to water, held in a humid environment for transport, conserved and displayed at the RAAF Museum. An interim strategy for that wreck, not a universal treatment method.

Law, ownership and human remains are part of conservation

Recovery is governed by the jurisdiction where the site lies, the aircraft’s nationality, ownership rules and any heritage or military-remains law. In the United Kingdom, the Ministry of Defence says protected military aircraft crash sites in the UK, its territorial waters and British aircraft in international waters fall under the Protection of Military Remains Act 1986. Excavation or recovery requires a licence from the MOD’s Joint Casualty and Compassionate Centre. Other countries use different laws and authorities.

Aircraft wrecks can contain crew remains, personal effects and sensitive historical evidence. In the Sallenelles Spitfire case, DRASSM recovered the pilot’s remains, which were later interred at the family’s request. A lawful project plans for respectful recovery, consultation with families and authorities, careful documentation and appropriate reburial or memorial decisions. Human remains should never be treated as incidental cargo in an engineering account.

A practical decision framework for a proposed recovery

  1. Define significance and authority. Confirm the aircraft’s identity, ownership, protected status, human-remains risks and the agency empowered to authorize work.
  2. Survey before disturbing. Record the site, sediments, biological activity, materials and condition, using non-destructive methods where possible.
  3. Set the conservation objective. Decide whether the outcome is stabilization, archaeological preservation, interpretation or another documented goal.
  4. Design the lift and interim environment. Specify supports, transport, wet or humid holding conditions and emergency actions for fragile components.
  5. Secure funding and a permanent home. Confirm treatment space, trained staff, equipment, records management and long-term storage or display before lifting.
  6. Assess and test. Photograph, measure, analyze materials and trial cleaning or corrosion methods on limited areas.
  7. Desalinate and clean under control. Remove soluble salts and harmful deposits while monitoring changes and preserving significant evidence.
  8. Stabilize, dry and protect. Apply material-specific treatments, use supports and coatings only where justified, and document every intervention.
  9. Monitor after installation. Establish inspection intervals, environmental limits and a response plan for renewed corrosion or structural movement.

The central principle is simple: a raised aircraft is an archaeological object whose future condition depends on decisions made before the lift. Professional conservation preserves information as well as material, and it treats engineering, chemistry, curation, law and human dignity as one project rather than separate afterthoughts.
