How RBI Rate Changes Affect Fixed Deposits, Savings Accounts and Loan Rates in India

An RBI rate change does not automatically reset every bank deposit and loan rate by the same amount or on the same day. Its effect depends on the product: repo-linked floating loans follow an external benchmark subject to the loan’s spread and reset terms; MCLR-linked loans follow a bank-calculated benchmark; and banks set savings and fixed-deposit rates separately.

The Reserve Bank of India’s rate snapshot showed a 5.25% policy repo rate as of 1 p.m. on October 6, 2026. That snapshot falls during the MPC meeting listed for October 5–7, 2026, so it should not be read as the meeting’s final decision. Check the RBI’s latest policy resolution and your bank’s current terms before making a decision.

How does an RBI rate change reach bank customers?

The repo rate is an RBI policy rate, not the rate every customer pays on a loan or earns on a deposit. A policy change can affect banks’ funding conditions and market rates, but the route and timing vary by product and contract.

Repo-linked floating loans

For a floating loan linked to an external benchmark such as the RBI repo rate, the benchmark is one part of the applicable rate. The lender’s spread and the loan agreement’s repricing schedule also matter. A repo-rate change therefore does not guarantee an immediate change to a borrower’s interest rate or EMI. Check the benchmark named in the agreement, the spread, and the next reset date or frequency. RBI’s Handbook of Statistics on the Indian Economy search-result extract identifies the repo rate as an example of an external benchmark.

MCLR-linked floating loans

MCLR is calculated by the bank, rather than being another name for the repo rate. The RBI handbook search-result extract describes components including the marginal cost of funds, negative carry on account of CRR, operating costs and a tenor premium. Since bank-specific costs and terms affect MCLR, it need not move in step with the repo rate. The extract also identifies specified FBIL Treasury-bill yields as possible external benchmarks. The linked handbook page redirected to the RBI homepage when opened, so these detailed mechanics are attributable to the displayed extract, not a directly inspected handbook page.

Savings accounts and fixed deposits

Banks set deposit rates. A policy-rate change may influence their pricing decisions, but it does not compel an immediate, equal change to every savings account or fixed deposit. A fixed deposit already booked earns according to its contract; a bank may offer a different rate on new deposits. For a specific account or deposit, use the bank’s current rate card and check the eligible customer category, tenure, payout or compounding method, and premature-withdrawal terms.

What rates did the RBI report in its October 2026 snapshot?

The RBI’s official pages listed the following India-specific figures. They are dated system snapshots, not offers from a particular bank or promises about an individual customer’s next rate change.

The RBI’s policy-meeting notice lists the October 5–7, 2026 meeting dates: RBI monetary-policy notice. For a later rate decision or current offer, verify the latest RBI communication and the relevant bank’s rate card.

Will an RBI repo rate cut reduce my home loan EMI?

It can reduce the interest rate on a floating loan linked to the repo rate, but the effect depends on the contract’s spread and reset schedule. The change may first affect the loan’s rate; how and when that changes the EMI or repayment period depends on the lender’s terms. A borrower with an MCLR-linked or other benchmark-linked loan should not assume a repo cut automatically produces the same result.

Look in the loan agreement or lender statement for the benchmark, current spread, reset frequency or date, and the rate currently applied. Ask the lender how a benchmark change will affect the EMI or remaining tenure under that agreement.

Do fixed-deposit rates go down when the RBI cuts the repo rate?

Not automatically, and not necessarily by the same amount. Banks set rates for new deposits and may change them at different times. The rate on an existing fixed deposit follows its contract, while a new booking may have different terms. Compare the current rate for the exact tenure and customer category, along with payout or compounding options and early-withdrawal rules.

Does the repo rate affect savings-account interest?

It can influence banks’ pricing environment, but it does not dictate a uniform savings-account rate or require every bank to change its rate after an RBI move. Check the current rate and account conditions at your own bank rather than treating the RBI’s system snapshot as a bank-specific offer.

How long does a repo rate change take to affect my loan?

There is no single timing that applies to every borrower. For a repo-linked floating loan, the contractual reset date or frequency determines when the benchmark change is applied, while the spread and lender’s terms determine the resulting rate. MCLR-linked loans depend on the lender’s MCLR and applicable reset terms. The RBI figures cited here do not establish an average customer wait or a typical amount of pass-through.
