Ray-Ban Meta audio is built around open-ear speakers in the frames, a microphone array for calls and voice commands, and a Bluetooth connection to your phone. The Meta AI app handles setup and product controls; Bluetooth carries ordinary phone audio and calls. The glasses use a temporary internal Wi-Fi connection for faster operations such as importing media and installing firmware updates, not as the normal music link.
The exact hardware depends on the model and market. The current US Ray-Ban Meta Audio listing specifies two open-ear speakers, six microphones, Bluetooth 5.3, compatibility with at least iOS 17 or Android 10, and up to 12 hours of use on one charge. Those are manufacturer specifications and an estimate, not independent measurements.

The audio hardware inside the frames
Two open-ear speakers
Ray-Ban describes Ray-Ban Meta Audio as having “2 Speaker Open Ear.” The speakers let you hear music, podcasts, navigation prompts and calls without inserting earbuds into your ear canal. Sound is produced by speakers built into the glasses rather than by a separate headset.
Ray-Ban’s public product pages do not specify the driver construction, frequency response, maximum sound-pressure level, exact placement geometry, acoustic leakage or signal-processing method. Those details should not be inferred from the speaker count. “Open-ear” describes the listening arrangement, not a particular driver technology.

A six-microphone array on the Audio model
The current US Ray-Ban Meta Audio listing specifies a six-microphone array. Ray-Ban says the microphones support voice commands and calls, but its public pages do not document the role of each microphone, the beamforming layout or the noise-reduction algorithms. A six-microphone count therefore tells you the model’s published hardware configuration, not exactly how each microphone behaves in a particular room or outdoors.
How audio gets from your phone to the glasses
- Your phone provides the source. Music, podcasts, videos, navigation prompts and cellular or internet calls originate on the paired smartphone.
- Bluetooth carries ordinary listening and calls. The glasses appear as a Bluetooth audio device. Ray-Ban’s support guidance says phone audio remains available over Bluetooth even when the glasses are not connected to the Meta AI app.
- The glasses play the signal through the open-ear speakers. You hear the phone’s audio through the speakers in the frames while remaining aware of surrounding sounds.
- The microphones send your voice back for calls and commands. Call and voice-command input uses the microphone array in the glasses; the exact processing path is not specified in the public documentation.
The Meta AI app is still part of normal operation. Ray-Ban states: “To operate Ray-Ban Meta glasses you need to connect your glasses with a smart phone and the Meta AI app.” The app is used for initial pairing, setup and product-management features. A Bluetooth audio connection by itself should not be treated as proof that every AI, configuration or internet-dependent feature will work without the app.
Bluetooth and Wi-Fi have different jobs

For everyday phone listening and calls, Bluetooth remains the documented path.

How to connect Ray-Ban Meta glasses to a phone
Use the exact model and current app version for your market. The published Audio listing requires at least iOS 17 or Android 10, while compatibility and feature availability can change with later software updates.
- Prepare the phone. Install the Meta AI app, charge the glasses, and turn on Bluetooth in the phone’s system settings.
- Start pairing in the app. Open the Meta AI app and choose its option to add or connect Ray-Ban Meta glasses. Follow the on-screen pairing instructions rather than trying to complete setup only from the phone’s Bluetooth menu.
- Approve system prompts. Allow the Bluetooth, microphone and other permissions requested by the app when you want calling, voice commands or related controls to work.
- Confirm the audio route. Start a short audio clip and check that the phone’s output is set to the glasses. Place a test call to verify both the speaker output and microphone input.
- Complete any update or import. If the app requests a faster connection for media import or firmware, accept the temporary internal Wi-Fi connection. On iOS, follow the prompt to join the glasses’ network, then return to the app when the transfer or update finishes.
After setup, Bluetooth can continue to carry phone audio even if the app is not currently connected. The app remains the companion for setup, management and features that depend on it.
What you can control while listening
Ray-Ban’s product and support pages describe touch and voice controls. The available gestures and voice commands depend on the model, service and software version, so use the controls shown in the Meta AI app for your glasses. Playback control and service setup are documented in the support material, but the exact services offered can vary by region.

Folding and reopening the frames
A regional support FAQ says audio may pause when the frames are folded and reconnect to the Bluetooth audio source when they are reopened. Treat that as region- and software-specific guidance, not a universal promise for every service or future version. If playback does not resume, check the phone’s Bluetooth audio output and the app’s device status.

“Ray-Ban Meta” is a family name, not one fixed audio specification. Counts, compatibility requirements and estimated battery use can differ between the audio-only product, camera-equipped generations and regional listings.

The figures in the table are tied to the named listing and market. Do not use the six-microphone count or the 12-hour estimate for another generation without checking that model’s own product page. Likewise, a five-microphone specification on a listed camera-equipped model does not describe the Audio-only product.

Battery and compatibility expectations
The US Ray-Ban Meta Audio page claims up to 12 hours of use on one charge. “Up to” is a manufacturer estimate; it is not an independently measured endurance result. Actual runtime can vary with listening volume, call time, voice-command use, connection conditions, updates and other activity. The cited product material does not provide a standardized test method, so the number should be used for planning rather than as a guaranteed runtime.
For the same US listing, Bluetooth 5.3 and minimum phone compatibility of iOS 17 or Android 10 are published requirements. They identify the listed edition, not every product sold under the Ray-Ban Meta name. Before buying or troubleshooting, check the model name, country page and current app requirements.

Troubleshooting quiet, broken or choppy call audio
Call problems are usually approached first as a phone-distance or Bluetooth-connection issue. Work through these checks in order so you know which change solved the problem.

- Move the phone closer. Keep the phone near the glasses and remove obstacles that could weaken the Bluetooth link.
- Check Bluetooth and the call route. Confirm Bluetooth is enabled and that the glasses are connected for calls and audio, not merely listed as a previously paired device.
- Verify the active output and input. During a test call, confirm the phone is using the glasses for both the earpiece and microphone. If the phone has switched to its handset or another accessory, select the glasses.
- Toggle Bluetooth. Turn Bluetooth off and back on, then reconnect the glasses if the audio remains intermittent.
- Restart and re-pair if necessary. Restart the phone and glasses according to the current support instructions. If the connection remains unreliable, remove the pairing and run the Meta AI app’s pairing process again.
- Use microphone troubleshooting before the call. Ray-Ban’s FAQ directs users to the Meta AI app’s microphone troubleshooting adjustment. Change that setting before starting a call; the guidance warns that changing it during a call can affect audio.
These steps are official support guidance, not a guarantee that every quiet or choppy call has the same cause. If music is clear but calls are not, concentrate on the call audio route and microphone setting. If all audio cuts out, start with phone distance, Bluetooth status and re-pairing.
What the public specifications do not tell you
The cited Ray-Ban pages establish the speaker and microphone counts, Bluetooth role, temporary Wi-Fi behavior, operating-system requirements and model-specific battery estimate. They do not establish a Bluetooth codec or profile, radio range, speaker frequency response, measured loudness, acoustic leakage, microphone placement, beamforming design, detailed noise-reduction algorithms or controlled laboratory performance.
That distinction matters when comparing reviews or generations. A higher microphone count does not, by itself, prove clearer calls, and an “open-ear” label does not quantify how much sound people nearby will hear. Use the published specifications to identify the hardware and connection path; treat performance claims as model- and test-specific.
