Pink sheep are rare in Minecraft. The official Java Edition 1.21.5 and Bedrock Edition 1.21.70 release notes, both from the Spring to Life update, say so directly. What they do not do is publish a percentage. The widely repeated figure of 0.164%, or about 1 in 610, comes from spawn rules that predate Spring to Life, so it describes the older game rather than the current one.
What the current official release notes say
Since Spring to Life, the color of a naturally spawned sheep depends on the biome it appears in. Both editions group biomes into three categories and name a common color for each. Pink appears in all three categories, and both editions describe it as rare in each one.

| Warm | Brown | Rare | Not stated in Java 1.21.5 or Bedrock 1.21.70 release notes |
The Java Edition 1.21.5 notes and the Bedrock Edition 1.21.70 notes use the same wording on this point: “There is a rare chance for a pink Sheep to spawn.” The release notes are the official documentation for each version and do not name an author or give a number.
Where the 0.164% figure comes from
The number most players have seen is 0.164%. It appears in a Minecraft Wiki mirror that lists spawn rules from before the biome-based color change. Under those older rules, the table gives two separate figures, which add up to the total:
#1 Best Overall
- Pink Sheep is 8-inch scale, measuring about 6 inches tall, 4.5 inches wide, and 9 inches long.
- From the world of Minecraft, these plush toys let fans bring favorite characters through the portal and into the real world!
- Each soft doll is 8 inch scale and made with a mix of premium fabrics, making them fun to hold and cuddle!
- They wear their iconic costumes so they’re easily recognizable and ready for gaming adventure!
- Recreate stories during playtime, enjoy snuggles at naptime or display any time with favorite characters from A Minecraft Movie and the video game!
| Sheep type (pre-Spring to Life rules) | Chance of pink |
|---|---|
| Adult sheep | 0.1558% |
| Baby sheep | 0.0082% |
| Combined natural spawn figure | 0.164% (about 1 in 610) |
A 2021 wiki discussion repeats the 0.164% figure for natural spawning and for spawn eggs. That discussion is community commentary about the earlier mechanics. It is not official confirmation of the current rate, and it should not be cited as one.
Because the official notes do not publish a current percentage, the exact odds of finding a naturally spawned pink sheep in a present-day Java or Bedrock world cannot be confirmed from official sources. Anyone quoting “1 in 610” as today’s rate is repeating a pre-Spring to Life number.

How to read pink sheep sightings
Not every pink sheep is a natural spawn, and only natural spawns are relevant to the rarity question.
- Naturally spawned pink sheep are the only ones the rarity description covers. Their rarity is confirmed as qualitative only.
- Dyed sheep tell you nothing about spawn probability. A player can recolor a sheep with dye, so a pink sheep seen in a player’s base or farm may not have spawned naturally.
- Spawn-egg sheep are deliberately created. The 0.164% figure is sometimes cited for spawn eggs in community discussion, but that link is historical and not official.
Biome choice affects which common color you should expect, but not the rarity of pink itself. A pink sheep in a cold biome is no more or less rare, according to the official notes, than one in a temperate or warm biome, because pink is described as rare in all three.

Summary of what is established
- Pink sheep are rare in current Java 1.21.5 and Bedrock 1.21.70 natural generation, according to the official release notes.
- Common sheep colors vary by biome category: white in temperate, black in cold, brown in warm.
- The 0.164% figure (0.1558% adult, 0.0082% baby) belongs to spawn rules that predate Spring to Life.
- No current official release note gives a numerical chance for pink sheep.
If you need a precise number for a current version, a numerical figure would have to come from a newer official source. The safe position is to describe pink as rare and to label any percentage as historical.
