Use two complementary measurements: check your site analytics for visits referred by news.google.com or news.url.google.com, then use Search Console to measure Google-reported clicks and impressions. In Search Console, the Google News report covers Google News on the web and in its Android and iOS apps; the News tab in Google Search is a separate surface and requires a Search Performance report filtered to search type News.
Measure visits on your site with referrer data
In your web analytics, inspect the source or referrer for news.google.com and news.url.google.com. Google identifies these as referrers that publishers can use to distinguish traffic from Google News. Review the landing pages and, where your analytics setup allows, what visitors do after arriving.

This view helps analyze on-site visits and subsequent interactions on standard HTML and AMP articles. It describes activity recorded by your site’s analytics, rather than every appearance of an article on a Google surface. Google’s Measure the impact of Google News guidance explains the referrer approach.

- Open Performance → Google News in Search Console. This report covers news.google.com and the Google News apps on Android and iOS. It reports clicks, impressions and average click-through rate (CTR), with available breakdowns such as page, country, date, device or appearance.
- Read the metrics in context. A click is a click from Google News that lands on your property. An impression is counted when a link is scrolled into view, subject to Google’s documented exceptions. These are Google-surface performance measures, not a count of all on-site sessions.
- Measure Google Search’s News tab separately. Open the Search Performance report and filter search type to News. That report covers the News tab in Google Search, which is excluded from the Google News Performance report.
Google details the report’s scope and metrics in its Performance report (Google News) documentation.

- Magic Capture catches the moment as you live it: With just one tap, Pixel 11 Pro captures video and photos, and automatically edits, crops, and unblurs a curated collection, ready to share – and you get the memory of how it felt to be in the moment
- Two new cameras for more brilliant photos: A larger telephoto sensor captures 30% more light for clear, beautiful photos and videos, even in the dark[3]; Pixel’s longest zoom ever helps you capture details from impressive distances[4]
Keep the two Google surfaces separate
The Google News Performance report and Search Performance filtered to News do not describe the same surface. Label them separately in dashboards and analysis; combining the figures without that distinction can make results hard to interpret. Use the Google News report for Google News app and web reporting, and the Search Performance report for Google Search’s News tab.
Why Search Console clicks and analytics sessions differ
Search Console and on-site analytics measure different stages of a visit and use different systems and definitions. A Search Console click is not interchangeable with an analytics session, so the totals should not be expected to match exactly. Google notes that discrepancies can also reflect canonical URL handling, time zones, data delays, preliminary recent data and product-specific exclusions. Its guidance on the differences between Search Console and Analytics data describes why the products do not report identical figures.

- URL attribution: Google News report page metrics are assigned to the canonical URL. A duplicate URL may show zero while the canonical URL receives the metrics. Your analytics may instead show the URL recorded for the landing visit.
- Date and time zone: Google News report dates use Pacific Time, except the 24-hour view, which uses your browser’s local time. Recent data can be preliminary; Google says data is normally available in roughly 2–3 days.
- Report limits and grouping: The table is capped at 1,000 rows. Table and chart totals can differ because of truncation, filters and grouping.
- Excluded activity: In-article swipes between articles in the Android and iOS apps, and notifications, are not counted as clicks or impressions in the report. Data is unavailable for Google News app versions older than November 2020.
A practical way to compare results
- Choose the same reporting window in both tools, allowing for the Google News report’s time zone and recent-data delay.
- Compare the relevant Google News referrer visits in your analytics with Google News report clicks, but treat them as different measures rather than expected matches.
- Check landing-page and canonical-URL differences before drawing conclusions about individual articles.
- Review the Search Performance report filtered to News separately if you also want to assess Google Search’s News tab.
- Look for direction and patterns across dates and articles. Do not add or directly equate counts from different surfaces or definitions.
