How Publishers Can Audit Revenue From Google News and Discover

Google News and Discover referral reports show traffic, not publisher earnings. To audit revenue associated with those visits, keep Google News, the News tab in Google Search, and Discover separate; align Search Console data with your analytics and ad-system records; then trace differences through timing, URL attribution, and monetization. Do not treat a click as a payment from Google.

What the reports measure—and what they do not

Search Console provides traffic measures such as clicks, impressions, and click-through rate (CTR). It does not report a publisher’s ad-server earnings. Google says it does not run ads on Google News or the News results tab in Google Search; publishers may earn from ads shown on their own websites, apps, or videos, or through other distinct arrangements. Google News referral activity is therefore an input to a revenue audit, not revenue itself. For Google’s distinction between these products and monetization contexts, see How Google supports the news industry.

Keep three traffic sources distinct. Google News reporting covers news.google.com and the Google News apps. The News tab in Google Search is reported in the Search performance report with the News search type. Discover has its own report. Combining them into a single “Google news” total can conceal differences in scope and performance.

Which report to use for each surface

Surface Search Console report and scope Measures and important reporting details
Google News Google News performance report; news.google.com and Google News apps Clicks, impressions, and average CTR; group by page, country, and date. Page metrics are assigned to canonical URLs. Daily reporting uses Pacific Time, except in the 24-hour view. Recent values may be preliminary. News app in-article swipes and notifications are not counted as clicks or impressions. Discover Discover performance report Clicks, impressions, and CTR, with available page, country, date, and appearance groupings. Metrics are attributed to canonical URLs. Reporting has minimum impression thresholds; recent data can be preliminary. Date tables use Pacific Time. Discover performance report documentation

Search Console defaults to the last three months, but its date filter can be changed. Choose the same complete date window in each reporting system before comparing totals.

Build the audit in six steps

1. Define the traffic buckets

Decide whether each line in your audit represents Google News, the Search News tab, or Discover. Preserve the source report and surface in your exported data. If your internal analytics groups these visits differently, record the mapping instead of silently folding the channels together.

2. Export traffic at a useful level

For each report, capture clicks, impressions, and CTR for the same date range. Add page and country dimensions where they help identify affected content or markets. The dimensions available vary by report, so retain the report name and grouping with the export.

3. Match URLs to canonical pages

Both Google News and Discover assign page metrics to canonical URLs. A duplicate, alternate, or parameterized landing URL may show no Search Console values even when its canonical page receives traffic. Map URL variants to the canonical page before joining Search Console rows to analytics, ad impressions, or revenue records.

4. Normalize dates and handle provisional values

Google News daily data and Discover date tables use Pacific Time; Google News’ 24-hour view is an exception. Convert or aggregate publisher analytics and ad-system data to the same time boundary before comparing daily figures. Google lists time zones among reasons Search Console data can differ from other sources.

Recent Search Console values can change over the next few hours. The 24-hour view shows preliminary hourly points by default. For settled comparisons, use complete days; otherwise mark partial or provisional periods clearly.

5. Join traffic to publisher-side monetization records

Use Search Console to identify pages and periods with News or Discover traffic, then compare those intervals with your own analytics and ad-server or monetization reports. Include the corresponding landing visits or sessions, ad impressions, and reported revenue where available. Keep revenue sources separate—for example, direct-sold and auction demand—and identify any modeled or unattributed allocation as such.

A practical audit table can include normalized date, surface, canonical page, Search Console clicks/impressions/CTR, publisher analytics sessions or landing visits, ad impressions, reported revenue, a house yield measure such as revenue per thousand impressions, and reconciliation notes. These are publisher-side fields: Search Console does not supply the ad revenue measures.

6. State what the comparison establishes

Describe an observed association without assigning causation or payment to Google. For example: “Search Console recorded X Discover clicks to canonical page Y during the period; our ad system reported Z in revenue for mapped page impressions under its own attribution.” A claim that Google paid that amount requires a separate contract or payment record.

Why traffic and revenue totals may not line up

  • Different time boundaries: Daily Search Console figures may use Pacific Time while internal reports use another time zone.
  • Different URL identities: Search Console may assign traffic to a canonical URL while the ad system records a variant or landing URL.
  • Different surface definitions: Google News, Search News, and Discover are not interchangeable report scopes.
  • Incomplete or preliminary periods: Partial days and recent data can change as reporting settles.
  • Threshold-suppressed rows: Discover data below a row-visibility threshold may still contribute to site totals, so visible rows may not sum to the total.
  • Different counting rules: Google News app in-article swipes and notifications are not counted as clicks or impressions.
  • Different monetization outcomes: A visit does not guarantee an ad impression or revenue; compare the publisher’s own ad delivery and revenue records to understand what happened after the referral.

Discover reporting covers eligible content from the last 16 months, subject to a minimum impression threshold. Google Search Central also cautions that Discover traffic is less predictable or dependable than keyword-driven search visits. Changes in user interests, content types, or Search updates can affect performance; a decline alone does not establish a site defect or editorial failure. See Google Search Central’s Discover guidance.

Keep referral traffic separate from other Google revenue

Google’s statement that it does not run ads on Google News or the Search News tab does not mean a publisher cannot monetize the resulting audience. It means referral metrics and ad earnings belong to different records: Search Console describes traffic, while publisher-side systems report monetization on the publisher’s properties.

News Showcase participation and subscription products are also distinct from Search Console referral metrics. Google says News Showcase may appear in Google News and Discover, but a publisher should audit any related contract revenue against its own agreement and payment statements—not infer it from referral clicks. Google’s page reports that its original News Showcase commitment was US$1 billion and that more than 2,300 publications were being paid for participation in a figure explicitly dated June 2023; neither figure establishes a particular publisher’s eligibility, participation, or receipts.

Use industry estimates cautiously

Google reports that more than 24 billion monthly clicks from Google Search and Google News results go to publisher websites; this is Google’s estimate and is not a Discover-only figure. The same Google page says news queries were under 2% of total Google Search queries globally in 2022, a historical share rather than a current traffic or revenue estimate.

Google cites a PwC study of 218 publishers in 38 countries, with an estimated average value-of-a-click of US$0.06–US$0.08 and US$0.13–US$0.15 for regional and local publishers. The study year is not stated on Google’s page. These modeled estimates are not guaranteed payments, a Discover rate, or a forecast of an individual publisher’s realized revenue. Use your own mapped traffic and monetization records for the audit.

Operational review: look beyond clicks

The Google News Initiative’s News Business Optimization Playbook says revenue is the primary metric to review first and recommends examining revenue sources regularly. For an audit, review traffic alongside demand or match rates, ad impression allocation, and unfilled impressions. Those measures can help explain why referral activity and revenue moved differently, but the relevant figures must come from the publisher’s own systems.
