PS5SX2, a community port of the PCSX2 emulator, can read a PlayStation 2 DVD on a homebrew-capable PS5, copy the disc to storage and launch the game. The project describes that physical-disc auto-play as beta and says it has been tested on only one “phat” PS5. It is therefore an experimental homebrew feature, not Sony backward compatibility.
Reporting on the feature says PS2 DVDs work with the PS5’s built-in drive and with supported external USB optical drives, while CD-format PS2 games do not. PS5SX2 also exposes internal-resolution multipliers from 1x through 6x, widescreen patches and filters such as FSR and CRT. A 6x setting can make a game much sharper, but it does not guarantee 4K output, full speed or compatibility for every title.

What PS5SX2 is—and what it is not
PS5SX2 is a homebrew port of the open-source PCSX2 emulator for PlayStation 5. It runs outside Sony’s official software support and requires a PS5 configured for homebrew. The project’s documented setup uses a PS2 BIOS dumped from the user’s own console and game images such as ISO, CHD, CSO or ZSO. The project README and files are published at the PS5SX2 project repository.
That distinction matters. A normal, unmodified PS5 does not gain PS2 disc playback simply by inserting a disc. PS5SX2 is a community application whose behavior depends on the console revision, homebrew environment, emulator build, game and graphics settings. Neither Sony nor the PS5 system software officially supports this workflow.

Can a PS5 read PS2 discs through homebrew?
PS2 DVDs can follow an automatic dump-and-launch path
PS5SX2’s release notes describe the intended sequence in these words: “Put a PS2 disc in the drive → PS5SX2 dumps it if not already dumped and launches the game.” The notes label the feature beta and add: “Only tested on one phat console. Feedback welcome.” Those statements are the project’s own release-note claims, not a broad compatibility test.
Tom’s Hardware reports that the physical-disc path covers DVD-format PS2 games, supports regional discs, and can use either the PS5’s internal optical drive or an external USB optical drive. The report is useful evidence of the feature, but it does not establish that every PS5 revision or every third-party drive behaves identically. Treat drive and media support as reported behavior rather than a guarantee.
PS2 CDs are a different case
PS5SX2’s reported direct-disc support does not extend to CD-format PS2 games. Tom’s Hardware attributes the limitation to the PS5 optical drive lacking the laser used to read standard CDs. A DVD-only path therefore cannot be fixed by changing an emulator setting: the console must first be able to read the physical medium.

Internal and external optical drives
The reporting describes support for the built-in PS5 drive and external USB optical drives. No model-level compatibility list is established, and beta software can expose differences between console revisions, USB adapters and drive firmware. If you use an external drive, confirm that the homebrew environment recognizes it before treating it as a substitute for the internal drive.
How the PS5SX2 disc workflow works
The practical process is a dump operation followed by emulation. The original disc is not being executed as native PS5 software; PS5SX2 creates or uses an image that the emulator can read.
- Prepare a compatible environment. Use a PS5 that already supports the required homebrew software and install a PS5SX2 build from the project’s release materials. The exact homebrew prerequisites are build- and firmware-dependent, so follow the README for the version you are using.
- Provide the emulator files. The project’s file-based setup calls for a PS2 BIOS dumped from your own PS2 and a supported game image format, including ISO, CHD, CSO or ZSO. Keep these files where the build expects them.
- Connect an optical drive. You can try the internal drive or a USB optical drive covered by the reported support. The physical-disc feature described by the project is beta, so drive detection can vary.
- Insert a PS2 DVD. In PS5SX2, use the disc option or let the application detect the inserted medium. According to the release notes, it dumps the disc if an image is not already present and then launches the game.
- Let the copy finish. An interrupted copy leaves an
.incompletemarker, which the release notes say prevents automatic starting. Remove or restart the partial dump according to the build’s file-handling instructions, then repeat the copy. - Set graphics options after boot. Start at a conservative resolution multiplier, verify that the game reaches gameplay, and then raise the multiplier or enable patches one change at a time.
The dump can take storage space and time, especially when the source is a full DVD. Once a complete image exists, subsequent launches can use that image instead of repeatedly reading the physical disc.

- A PS5 revision and firmware combination that can run the required homebrew environment.
- A PS5SX2 release compatible with that environment.
- A PS2 BIOS dumped from your own console for the project’s documented file-based setup.
- A PS2 game image in a supported format, or a readable PS2 DVD for the beta physical-disc path.
- Storage for dumped images and any temporary files created during copying.
- For external-disc use, a USB optical drive that the homebrew stack and PS5SX2 can access.
PCSX2’s official BIOS documentation explains the general emulator requirement plainly: “PCSX2 cannot play games without a BIOS, and no open-source alternative exists.” That statement applies to PCSX2’s documented workflow. For PS5SX2, use the BIOS and file requirements stated by the specific PS5SX2 build rather than assuming that every configuration is identical. The BIOS guide is at PCSX2’s Dumping BIOS documentation.

How PS5SX2 upscales PS2 games
Resolution multipliers from 1x to 6x
PS5SX2 exposes internal-resolution settings from 1x through 6x. A multiplier changes the resolution at which the emulator renders the game before the image is sent to the display. Higher values can make geometry and textures look cleaner on a modern television, but they increase the work required from the emulator.
Six-times scaling is an available option, not a performance promise. Whether a title remains playable depends on the game’s rendering behavior, the PS5 or PS5 Pro, the selected patches and the rest of the graphics configuration. A display may accept a 4K signal while the game itself renders at a different internal resolution; do not equate the 6x menu value with guaranteed native 4K output in every title.
Widescreen patches
The graphics options include aspect-ratio controls and widescreen patches. A patch can adapt a game designed for 4:3 displays to a wider frame, but game-specific patches can introduce stretching, altered camera framing or glitches. Test the unpatched aspect ratio first if a title shows incorrect geometry or missing objects.
Filters: FSR, FSR soft, Classic and CRT
Available filters listed by the project include FSR, FSR soft, Classic and CRT. FSR-style filters emphasize edge sharpness; the soft variant reduces the harshness that can appear on low-resolution artwork. Classic leaves a cleaner, less stylized presentation, while CRT simulates scanline-era display characteristics. Filters change the look of the final image and can add processing cost, so evaluate them separately from the resolution multiplier.

Per-game settings matter
PS5SX2 exposes game-specific graphics and performance settings. One title may sustain full speed at a high multiplier while another needs 2x or 1x, a different renderer or a patch adjustment. Change one setting at a time and keep a known-good profile so you can return to it when a new option causes slowdown or visual errors.

The PS5SX2 game table records games that were started on a PS5 or PS5 Pro during development and early testing. The project explicitly warns that this list is not a compatibility guarantee and can change. Entries can represent sustained full-speed play at a particular multiplier, a short test, a title that starts without recorded gameplay, or a patched frame rate.
Use the table as a starting point for expectations, not as a certification list. Results vary with the game, selected resolution, widescreen or other patches, console model and emulator revision. A game reaching its menu is not evidence that a long play session will remain full speed, and a short test at 6x does not establish that every level will perform the same way.

A computer optical drive, a BIOS-dumping memory card or PS2 softmod storage belongs to the PCSX2 workflow. None is automatically required merely to insert a DVD into PS5SX2, although the PS5SX2 build still expects the BIOS and files described in its own setup documentation.

Troubleshooting common failures
The PS5 does not detect the disc
- Confirm that the game is a DVD-format PS2 title. A CD-format title is outside the reported PS5SX2 disc path.
- If using USB, reconnect the drive and verify that the homebrew environment exposes it to PS5SX2.
- Try the internal drive if available, or test another supported configuration; no universal third-party drive list has been established.
- Check the project’s release notes and README for build-specific changes before assuming the disc itself is defective.
The copy stops or the game will not auto-start afterward
Look for the .incomplete marker mentioned in the release notes. The project says an interrupted copy marked this way will not auto-start. Complete the dump again or remove the partial image only through the file-management method documented for your build.
The game boots but runs slowly
- Return the internal resolution to 1x or another lower multiplier.
- Disable widescreen patches and post-processing filters temporarily.
- Test the game’s per-title graphics and performance settings.
- Compare a longer gameplay segment rather than judging performance from the title screen or a short intro.
If lowering settings restores speed, the result demonstrates a performance limit for that game and configuration; it does not show that the disc dump failed.
The game shows a blank screen or fails before gameplay
Verify that the BIOS file and game image are in the locations and formats required by the installed build. If you are using a physical disc, confirm that the dump completed and that the image no longer carries the .incomplete marker. Compatibility can also vary by emulator revision and game-specific patch, so consult the project’s current notes rather than treating one failed boot as proof that all PS2 titles are unsupported.

PS5SX2 makes high-resolution rendering possible, including a 6x internal-resolution choice, but “4K” is not a universal result. The final image depends on the game’s native assets, the selected multiplier, aspect-ratio and widescreen patches, filters, output settings and whether the title can maintain full speed. Some games may look substantially cleaner; others may need a lower multiplier to avoid slowdown or may expose rendering bugs at higher values.
The safest expectation is adjustable enhancement rather than a fixed promise: begin with the game’s stable setting, then trade resolution and visual effects against speed on a title-by-title basis.
Bottom line
PS5SX2 gives a homebrew-capable PS5 a reported way to dump and play PS2 DVDs, including discs from different regions, through the internal or certain external USB optical drives. The feature remains beta, was tested on one phat console according to the project, and does not cover CD-format PS2 games because of the PS5 drive’s reported hardware limitation. Its 1x-to-6x scaling, widescreen patches and filters can modernize the image, but compatibility and frame rate remain game- and setting-dependent. PCSX2 on a computer remains the separate route for dumping both PS2 DVDs and CDs with suitable optical hardware.
