Primordial helium-4 is one of the clearest tests of Big Bang nucleosynthesis (BBN). In the universe’s first few minutes, the balance between weak-interaction reactions and cosmic expansion fixed how many neutrons survived. Nuclear reactions then put most of those neutrons into helium-4. The resulting helium-4 mass fraction, usually written Yp, can be calculated and compared with helium measured in very metal-poor gas and with independent cosmic microwave background (CMB) observations. The agreement is a powerful consistency test of the hot Big Bang model, although helium alone is not proof of every detail of cosmology.

What “primordial helium” means

Primordial helium is helium produced before stars existed, during Big Bang nucleosynthesis. The relevant isotope is helium-4, whose nucleus contains two protons and two neutrons. Later stars also manufacture helium, so astronomers cannot use the total helium seen in a galaxy as a direct BBN measurement. Instead, they look for extremely metal-poor clouds whose composition is close to the original material and extrapolate toward zero heavy-element content.

The commonly quoted result is that roughly one quarter of the universe’s baryonic mass emerged as helium after the Big Bang. NASA Cosmicopia gives the accessible approximation “about 25% of the baryon mass,” in an answer by NASA astrophysicist Dr. Eric Christian dated March 2002. This is a mass fraction, not a statement that one quarter of all atoms are helium. Hydrogen atoms are lighter, and the number fraction is therefore different. In precision work, researchers quote Yp, the primordial helium-4 mass fraction; the Particle Data Group (PDG) 2023 review uses 0.249 as an example observed primordial value.

NASA’s educational pages describe most helium forming after about three minutes in one account and after about five minutes in a newer timeline. These are rounded descriptions of the first-minutes nucleosynthesis era, not contradictory timestamps for a single event. Nuclear assembly began once the expanding plasma cooled enough for light nuclei to survive, and it largely stopped as the universe continued to dilute and cool.

How the early universe made helium-4

Weak reactions set the neutron supply

At very high temperatures, protons and neutrons were continually converted into one another by weak interactions. Reactions involving electrons, positrons, neutrinos and antineutrinos kept the neutron-to-proton ratio near its temperature-dependent equilibrium value. As expansion cooled the universe, the weak-reaction rate fell while the Hubble expansion rate remained decisive. Around a temperature of roughly 1 MeV, weak reactions became too slow to maintain equilibrium. This is called weak freeze-out.

Freeze-out does not instantly stop every conversion. Some neutrons still decay before nuclei assemble, so the neutron-to-proton ratio decreases between weak freeze-out and the onset of efficient nuclear reactions. The final helium yield therefore depends on both the ratio at freeze-out and the time available for neutron decay before assembly.

Nuclear assembly locks neutrons into helium

Once deuterium could survive the high-energy photon bath, a chain of nuclear reactions rapidly built helium-3, tritium and then helium-4. Helium-4 is especially favored because it is tightly bound. Nearly every neutron still available at this stage ends up in a helium-4 nucleus, which requires two neutrons for every two protons. The remaining protons become ordinary hydrogen nuclei. Only small traces of deuterium, helium-3 and lithium-7 are produced, with beryllium participating in the reaction network.

A useful approximation is that the helium mass fraction tracks the neutron fraction at the beginning of nuclear assembly. If n/p is the neutron-to-proton ratio at that point, then a larger ratio means more of the baryonic mass is placed in helium-4. Detailed BBN calculations use a network of reaction rates, neutron lifetime, baryon density, expansion history and other inputs rather than this simple approximation, but the neutron-budget picture explains why helium is so sensitive to early-universe physics.

Why expansion rate changes the helium prediction

The expansion rate is controlled by the energy density of the young universe. Extra relativistic particles increase that density and make the universe expand faster. A faster expansion causes weak freeze-out at a higher temperature, when the equilibrium neutron-to-proton ratio is larger. It also leaves less time for neutrons to decay before nuclear assembly. Both effects increase the predicted helium-4 mass fraction.

The PDG 2023 review summarizes this sensitivity approximately as ΔYp ≃ 0.013ΔNν: a change of about 0.013 in helium-4 mass fraction per unit change in effective neutrino number. This is a model-dependent response to altered relativistic energy density, not a stand-alone neutrino counter. Interpreting a helium difference as a particle-physics constraint requires assumptions about the expansion law, nuclear rates, baryon density and other light-element abundances.

What standard BBN predicts and what observers measure

Predicted abundance

Standard BBN starts with a specified baryon-to-photon ratio, the standard expansion history and measured nuclear and weak-interaction properties. It predicts a helium-4 mass fraction along with deuterium, helium-3 and lithium abundances. Because helium production is dominated by the neutron budget, its prediction is comparatively robust, but the quoted value still carries uncertainties in nuclear inputs, neutron lifetime and cosmological parameters.

Helium from metal-poor H II regions

Astronomers measure helium and hydrogen emission lines in extragalactic H II regions, where ultraviolet radiation from young stars ionizes gas. They select regions with very low heavy-element abundance because stellar processing generally raises helium and metals together. A regression of measured helium against a metal indicator can be extrapolated toward zero metallicity to estimate the primordial value.

This is not a direct sample of gas untouched since the Big Bang. The inference must account for electron temperature, density, radiative-transfer effects, underlying stellar absorption, ionization structure and contamination by neutral gas. Different choices in atomic data and sample selection can shift the result, which is why observational papers report systematic as well as statistical uncertainty.

Independent information from the CMB

The CMB provides a physically different check. Acoustic-peak amplitudes determine the baryon density, while the small-scale damping tail has sensitivity to the primordial helium fraction because helium changes the number of free electrons available before recombination. A CMB analysis can either impose the BBN relation between helium and baryon density or fit helium as an independent parameter.

Evidence What is measured What it tests Main qualification
Metal-poor extragalactic H II regions Helium and hydrogen emission lines, with a metallicity extrapolation Whether the inferred primordial Yp matches the BBN yield Requires corrections for temperature, density, ionization and stellar absorption
CMB acoustic peaks Baryon density from the pattern and heights of acoustic peaks Whether the baryon density used by BBN agrees with a later-epoch measurement Parameter values depend on the specified CMB data set and cosmological model
CMB damping tail Small-scale power affected by the free-electron history and helium fraction An abundance check that does not rely solely on local helium spectroscopy Current CMB-only helium errors are broad compared with the best spectroscopic constraints

The BBN–CMB concordance test

The logic is stronger than simply comparing one predicted number with one spectrum. BBN operates in the first minutes, whereas the CMB records conditions roughly 380,000 years later. In standard cosmology, the baryon-to-photon ratio is conserved between these epochs. Therefore, a baryon density inferred from CMB acoustic peaks should be the same density that makes the BBN calculations fit the light-element data.

The PDG 2023 Review of Particle Physics reports a Planck analysis using TT, TE, EE and lowE data plus lensing. Its fiducial result, which uses BBN theory to set Yp(η), gives Ωbh2 = 0.02237 ± 0.00015 and η10 = 6.12 ± 0.04. Here, η10 is the baryon-to-photon ratio multiplied by 1010, and Ωbh2 is the physical baryon-density parameter.

The same review also summarizes a CMB fit that does not impose the BBN helium relation. That fit gives Ωbh2 = 0.02230 ± 0.00021 and η10 = 6.104 ± 0.058. Those values are consistent with the BBN range inferred using high-redshift deuterium-to-hydrogen measurements and local helium determinations. Combining CMB and BBN in the review’s analysis gives η10 = 6.115 ± 0.038 and Ωbh2 = 0.02233 ± 0.00014. These numbers describe the data set and analysis summarized in the 2023 review; they are not immutable constants.

For the helium-specific CMB test, the PDG review reports a Planck fit without the BBN Yp(η) relation of Yp = 0.239+0.024−0.025 at 95% confidence. The broad interval is consistent with H II-region determinations and standard BBN at the Planck baryon density. It is best understood as a successful independent consistency check, not as a precision measurement that replaces spectroscopic helium work.

Why helium is a particularly useful BBN test

  • It is tied directly to weak freeze-out. The neutron-to-proton ratio is set by a well-defined competition between microscopic reaction rates and the Hubble rate.
  • Most surviving neutrons enter one dominant nucleus. Helium-4 production is easier to interpret than a network in which many channels share the same nuclei.
  • It probes expansion physics. Changes in relativistic energy density leave a calculable imprint on Yp.
  • It has independent observational routes. Gas spectroscopy and CMB anisotropies use different instruments, epochs and systematics.
  • It links two cosmic eras. Agreement between BBN and CMB baryon densities tests whether the standard thermal history connects the first minutes to recombination.

What the agreement does—and does not—establish

Matching helium observations with standard BBN supports a hot, expanding early universe with the expected weak-interaction freeze-out and radiation content. Agreement with the CMB adds a second, later-epoch check and limits changes to the baryon density or expansion history between nucleosynthesis and recombination.

It is still more accurate to call this concordance or a consistency test than a standalone proof. The inference depends on a model, measured nuclear inputs and observational corrections. BBN is a broader light-element test, and the PDG literature discusses a persistent lithium discrepancy: not every predicted abundance agrees with observations at the same level as helium and deuterium. A successful helium test therefore supports the standard framework without claiming that every unresolved abundance issue has disappeared.

How to read a helium claim correctly

  1. Check the quantity. Confirm that the number is a helium-4 mass fraction, Yp, rather than an atomic or number fraction.
  2. Check the epoch and source. A primordial estimate should come from metal-poor gas, a CMB fit, or a BBN calculation—not from the helium content of an ordinary star or galaxy.
  3. Read the uncertainty. Include statistical and systematic errors, confidence level and the analysis date.
  4. Identify imposed assumptions. Determine whether the CMB fit fixed helium using BBN or allowed it to vary independently.
  5. Separate sensitivity from discovery. The approximate 0.013 shift per unit effective-neutrino change illustrates leverage; it does not by itself establish new particles.
  6. Compare multiple abundances. The strongest BBN assessment considers helium together with deuterium and other light nuclides, while treating known tensions explicitly.

Bottom line for the Big Bang question

Primordial helium supports Big Bang nucleosynthesis because its abundance preserves a quantitative record of the early universe’s neutron-to-proton ratio. Weak freeze-out and the expansion rate determine that ratio; nuclear reactions then convert most surviving neutrons into helium-4. The predicted mass fraction agrees, within stated uncertainties, with helium inferred from metal-poor extragalactic H II regions. Independent CMB measurements recover a compatible baryon density and provide a broad helium constraint from the damping tail. Taken together, these results make helium one of the most important complementary tests of the hot Big Bang, while leaving room for systematic uncertainties and the separate lithium problem.
