Choose a USB-C Power Delivery (PD) power bank with enough output on the port you’ll use to meet your laptop’s supported USB-C charging input. First verify that your exact laptop model accepts charging over USB-C, then check its manual or adapter specifications. Capacity in watt-hours (Wh) determines how much energy the bank stores; it does not make an incompatible or underpowered output suitable.
Check that your laptop can charge over USB-C
A USB-C socket alone does not mean a laptop accepts charging through it. Look up the exact model in its manufacturer’s manual or specifications and confirm both USB-C Power Delivery charging support and which port accepts power. If there are multiple USB-C ports, consult the manual rather than assuming they all charge the laptop. MSI directs owners to check the manual for port details, and Dell notes that power behavior varies by platform and can differ when running on battery. MSI’s guidance for USB Type-C PD power banks; Dell’s USB-C power guidance.

Match the power bank’s output to the laptop
Find the laptop’s stated maximum USB-C charging input or use its bundled adapter wattage as a reference. Then check the power bank’s maximum USB-C PD output on the specific port you plan to use. A bank’s headline wattage may describe just one port or a particular operating condition; connecting another device can reduce the power available to the laptop.
MSI says a PD bank with maximum output equal to or greater than the bundled adapter rating works for suitable MSI laptops, but this is model-specific advice. MSI also says a maximum-100 W PD bank can serve as battery backup for supported MSI laptops supplied with adapters above 100 W. Do not treat that as a universal rule or assume the bank will replace the laptop’s full-power adapter. MSI’s product-information guidance.

If a bank cannot meet the laptop’s usual adapter rating, it may still extend runtime or charge more slowly if that laptop accepts the lower input. Confirm this for the model; do not infer it from the connector or the power bank’s label.
Will a 65 W or 100 W bank work?
Only if your laptop supports USB-C PD charging at a compatible power level and the bank can provide the required output on the chosen port. A 65 W bank is not automatically enough for a laptop that expects more, and a 100 W bank is not automatically suitable for every laptop. Use your model’s specifications to decide.

Can you use a 140 W USB-C bank?
A higher maximum wattage does not by itself mean the bank will push that full power into a laptop. USB PD devices negotiate an available power level; actual compatibility depends on the laptop, bank, cable, and port. USB PD 3.1 supports up to 240 W with a suitable full-featured USB-C cable, but that standard ceiling is not a promise that any particular pairing supports 240 W. USB Implementers Forum: USB Power Delivery.
Check the cable and multi-device output
- Verify the power bank supports USB PD and that its stated output applies to the port you will use.
- Check the bank’s output behavior when more than one device is connected; simultaneous charging can limit laptop output.
- Use a cable rated for the power level you need. USB PD 3.1’s 240 W capability requires a suitable full-featured USB-C cable. USB Implementers Forum.
- Use the laptop maker’s compatibility guidance and reputable product documentation; a “USB-C PD” label alone does not establish that every implementation is compatible.
Choose capacity in Wh for extra runtime
Wattage describes how quickly a bank can supply power; watt-hours describe how much energy it stores. Compare Wh ratings when estimating how much extra energy you can carry. If a label gives only milliamp-hours, the voltage basis is needed to convert it: Wh = mAh × volts ÷ 1,000. The FAA gives the equivalent formula as Wh = volts × amp-hours. FAA PackSafe: Lithium Batteries.

A rough idealized upper-bound comparison is full-charge equivalents ≈ power-bank Wh ÷ laptop-battery Wh. It is not a real-world promise: conversion losses and power used by the laptop while connected reduce the energy available to refill its battery. Dell’s 2024 datasheet, for example, claims that its specific 90 Wh Targus bank can fully charge a 38 Wh Dell laptop twice; that claim applies to those stated products, not to power banks generally. Dell Technologies’ Targus power-bank datasheet.
Example: output and stored energy are different
Dell’s April 2024 datasheet lists these Targus examples. They illustrate why both output and capacity matter, not which bank is right for a particular laptop.

For US passenger travel, the FAA says spare batteries, including power banks, must go in carry-on baggage. Its guidance allows batteries from 0 to 100 Wh, requires airline approval for 101–160 Wh, and forbids batteries above 160 Wh. Airlines may set stricter rules, so confirm with the operating carrier before travel. FAA PackSafe: Lithium Batteries.

Quick Recap
A practical selection checklist
- Find your exact laptop model’s manual or specifications and confirm USB-C PD charging support and the charging-capable port.
- Identify the laptop’s stated USB-C input or bundled adapter wattage; treat the adapter rating as a reference, not proof that every port accepts that input from a bank.
- Choose a power bank whose per-port USB-C PD output meets a level your laptop supports. Check voltage/current profiles and any output reduction when multiple devices are connected.
- Confirm the USB-C cable is rated for the power level and standard you intend to use.
- Choose enough Wh for the extra energy you want to carry, while accounting for weight, travel limits, and airline requirements.
- Compare documented protections, warranty, and regional availability for the specific bank. For example, Dell lists overcharge, overvoltage, overcurrent, overheating, short-circuit, and temperature protections for its cited Targus models; those features are product-specific. Dell Technologies’ product documentation.
