Pokémon card grading is a two-part service: the company first authenticates the card, then evaluates its condition and seals it in a tamper-evident holder. The grade can help buyers judge condition, but it is not a guarantee of resale value. PSA, CGC, and Beckett use different labels, standards, fees, value limits, and service availability, so a PSA 10, a CGC grade, and a Beckett grade should not be treated as automatic equivalents.
The practical choice depends on your goal, the card’s plausible value, how quickly you need it back, and which service tier is accepting submissions when you are ready to mail it. The prices and estimates below are official United States direct-submission terms checked on October 13, 2026; verify the live service page immediately before sending cards because fees, limits, and queues can change.

What a Pokémon card grading company actually does
Authentication comes before numerical grading. PSA says it verifies that a card is genuine and checks for doctoring such as recoloring or trimming. Only an authentic card proceeds to condition grading. After grading, PSA places the card in a sonically sealed, tamper-evident case with a label and certification number. Its service description is available at PSA’s Trading Card Grading Services page.

PSA’s published wording illustrates the point: “A PSA Gem Mint 10 card is a virtually perfect card.” The same standards also describe approximate centering tolerances and acknowledge that eye appeal can involve judgment. You can read the criteria at PSA’s Grading Standards. A photograph-based prediction is therefore never an assured result; lighting, angle, focus, surface scratches, and print texture can change what a grader sees.
The grading process from submission to return
1. Identify the exact card and inspect it
Record the set, card number, language, rarity, edition or print variant, and whether it is a special promo, error, oversized card, or hand-cut item. Compare the front and back with reliable reference images before choosing a service. Under bright, diffuse light, inspect corners, edges, centering, whitening, dents, scratches, stains, gloss, and any evidence that the stock has been altered.
2. Choose a tier that fits value and urgency
Each service tier has a fee, a declared or insured value ceiling, and an estimated turnaround. Select a tier whose value limit covers the card’s plausible value. If the card could exceed that ceiling, the company may require a more expensive tier. A low advertised price is not useful if the card is ineligible, the tier is paused, or the declared value is too low.
3. Complete the online submission
Enter the card details accurately, select the service level, and review the company’s current packaging and shipping instructions. Save the order number and a copy of the submission form. The service clock does not necessarily begin when you hand a parcel to a carrier: PSA says its estimate starts after order entry, receipt, or scanning, while CGC describes its estimate as applying to a submission delivered to its facility.

- What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (5-in-1, 4K HDMI), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
4. Package the card as instructed
Use the holder and packing method specified by the grader. PSA’s no-grade guidance refers to returning cards in a card saver sleeve, and semi-rigid trading-card holders are a common submission accessory category. Do not improvise with a holder that can bend, abrade, or trap the card. Protect the stack from movement, moisture, and crushing, and insure the shipment according to the declared value and the carrier’s terms.
5. Authentication and condition grading
At the facility, staff check authenticity and look for trimming, recoloring, restoration, cleaning, altered stock, and other tampering. Authentic cards are then assessed against the selected company’s scale. A card can be genuine yet receive no ordinary numerical grade when an alteration or other problem prevents standard grading.
6. Encapsulation, certification, and shipping back
Cards that complete the process are sealed in the company’s holder and receive a label. Check the certification information when the card returns, then examine the holder for damage and confirm that the card and label match your submission. Keep the invoice and shipment records for insurance or a future sale.

How the three services differ
| Company | Published standards and labels | Current submission situation (US direct submissions, checked 2026-10-13) |
|---|---|---|
| PSA | Authentication precedes grading; a 10-point scale; published criteria include centering, corners, focus, gloss, staining, and eye appeal. | Value and Value Bulk were shown as temporarily unavailable. Standard, Priority, Express, and Super Express were listed. |
| CGC Cards | Service page lists grading tiers and fees. Consult CGC’s live grading-scale page for detailed label definitions before relying on a particular grade name. | Bulk, Economy, Standard, Express, WalkThrough, and Unlimited Value services were listed, subject to the page’s current terms. |
| Beckett | The indexed grading information describes four subgrades—centering, corners, edges, and surface—and labels including Pristine 10, Gem Mint 9.5, and Mint 9. The grading page redirected to a service notice during verification, so confirm the live scale before submitting. | The official notice said Express submissions remained available through a temporary form; Base and Standard card submissions were paused. |
PSA: tiers, limits, and what its standards mean

| Tier | Price per card | Maximum insured value | Estimated turnaround |
|---|---|---|---|
| Standard | $59.99 | $1,000 | 90–100 business days |
| Priority | $79.99 | $1,500 | 70–80 business days |
| Express | $199 | $2,500 | 20–30 business days |
| Super Express | $349 | $5,000 | 10–15 business days |
Higher-value tiers were listed at substantially higher prices. PSA warns that turnaround estimates can change and are not guarantees. “Business days” are not calendar days, and the service clock may begin after order entry or scanning rather than at the moment your parcel is mailed. The live fee page is https://www.psacard.com/services/tradingcardgrading.
PSA’s standards describe a Gem Mint 10 as a virtually perfect card, with sharp corners, strong focus, original gloss, no staining, and approximate centering tolerance of 55/45 on the front and 75/25 on the reverse. Those figures are part of PSA’s criteria, not a universal rule that CGC or Beckett must apply in the same way. Eye appeal can still involve grader judgment.
CGC Cards: lower entry price, defined value ceilings, and working-day estimates
CGC’s official US direct-submission page listed the following terms on October 13, 2026:
| Tier | Price per card | Maximum value per card | Estimated turnaround | Quantity condition |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Bulk | $17 | $500 | 150 working days | 25-card minimum |
| Economy | $20 | $1,000 | 90 working days | Single-card submissions allowed under listed terms |
| Standard | $55 | $3,000 | 10 working days | Single-card submissions allowed under listed terms |
| Express | $100 | $10,000 | 5 working days | Single-card submissions allowed under listed terms |
| WalkThrough | $300 | $100,000 | 2 working days | Single-card submissions allowed under listed terms |
| Unlimited Value | $300 plus 1% of fair market value | Unlimited under the listed service | 2 working days | Single-card submissions allowed under listed terms |
CGC defines working days as weekdays excluding weekends and public holidays. The page notes that membership discounts may apply and that estimates are not guaranteed. Bulk’s 25-card minimum makes it unsuitable for one card, even though its per-card price is the lowest in this table. Review current terms at CGC Cards Services & Fees.

CGC CrossOver
CGC’s ordinary CrossOver service evaluates a card in a PSA, Beckett, or SGC holder. CGC removes it for encapsulation only if it believes the card will receive the same or a higher grade. You can select “Cross at Any Grade” to accept a lower grade. If the card does not cross under the ordinary rule, the full grading fee still applies. Read the current CrossOver terms on the same CGC service page before sending an already graded card.
Beckett: subgrades and a changing submission window
Beckett’s indexed grading information describes four subgrades: centering, corners, edges, and surface. It also lists a scale that includes Pristine 10, Gem Mint 9.5, Mint 9, and lower grades. Because the grading-page URL redirected to Beckett’s live service notice during the October 13, 2026 verification, treat that scale description as a guide and check the current grading-scale page before relying on a specific label.
The live notice said Express remained available through a temporary submission form for cards sent to Beckett headquarters in Plano, Texas. Base and Standard card submissions were paused. Beckett said availability could change with demand and backlog, and that payment is confirmed after receipt and review. Existing orders were to continue processing. Do not use older Base or Standard prices and turnaround claims while the normal service page is unavailable. Start with Beckett’s current grading notice.

How to decide which grader fits your goal
Personal collection, preservation, or display
Prioritize the holder, label design, availability, declared-value ceiling, and total cost. A fast tier is useful only if the shorter estimate matters to you. If the card is valuable, make sure the selected limit covers a realistic replacement value and that your shipping insurance matches it.
Best Value
- 5-in-1 Connectivity: Equipped with a 4K HDMI port, a 5 Gbps USB-C data port, two 5 Gbps USB-A ports, and a USB C 100W PD-IN port. Note: The USB C 100W PD-IN port supports only charging and does not support data transfer devices such as headphones or speakers.
- Powerful Pass-Through Charging: Supports up to 85W pass-through charging so you can power up your laptop while you use the hub. Note: Pass-through charging requires a charger (not included). Note: To achieve full power for iPad, we recommend using a 45W wall charger.
- Transfer Files in Seconds: Move files to and from your laptop at speeds of up to 5 Gbps via the USB-C and USB-A data ports. Note: The USB C 5Gbps Data port does not support video output.
- HD Display: Connect to the HDMI port to stream or mirror content to an external monitor in resolutions of up to 4K@30Hz. Note: The USB-C ports do not support video output.
- What You Get: Anker 332 USB-C Hub (5-in-1), welcome guide, our worry-free 18-month warranty, and friendly customer service.
Authentication of a questionable or unusual card
Choose a service whose current rules cover the item. Promos, errors, oversized cards, and hand-cut cards can have special treatment. PSA says a hand-cut card may be encapsulated as Authentic only when the cut falls outside the visible border, while severe undersizing can prevent authentication. Read the live policy before mailing unusual pieces.
Preparing for a sale
Do not assume one company always commands the highest price. Compare recent completed sales for the exact Pokémon card, grade, and holder. Then subtract the grading fee, inbound and return shipping, insurance, marketplace fees, and any taxes. A higher grade can increase buyer confidence, but the grading fee and waiting period can outweigh the benefit for a low-value card.
One card versus a batch
For one card, a tier without a minimum is usually the practical choice. CGC Bulk requires 25 cards, so its $17 price only becomes relevant when you can meet that minimum. For a batch, calculate the entire invoice rather than comparing only the per-card number; shipping, insurance, membership discounts, and possible upcharges affect the total.

A genuine card does not automatically receive a numerical grade. PSA’s no-grade categories include evidence of trimming (N1), restoration (N2), recoloration (N3), questionable authenticity (N4), altered stock (N5), minimum size (N6), cleaning (N7), miscut (N8), and “Don’t Grade” (N9). PSA states that fees still apply for several no-grade reasons, while specified minimum-size, miscut, or ungradable outcomes can have different treatment under its current terms. Read the submission agreement before paying.
Never trim a border, recolor whitening, press a dent, polish a surface, chemically clean a card, or otherwise alter it to chase a higher number. Those actions can be evidence that blocks ordinary grading and may reduce the card’s value. If the card has an unusual cut or apparent manufacturing error, disclose it and verify eligibility rather than trying to correct it yourself.
Turnaround, shipping, and declared value pitfalls
- Estimate versus promise: PSA and CGC both describe turnaround as an estimate, not a guarantee. Backlogs, holidays, demand, and service changes can extend the wait.
- Different clocks: PSA’s clock can start after order entry, receipt, or scanning; CGC’s working-day estimate is tied to delivery to its facility. A carrier transit time is additional.
- Value mismatch: If the card’s plausible value exceeds a tier’s limit, select a higher tier or ask the company how it handles an upcharge. Do not understate value to obtain a cheaper service.
- Paused tiers: A price shown on an old page is not proof that the tier accepts orders today. Check the live submission form immediately before packing.
- Carrier risk: Use tracking, appropriate insurance, and packaging that prevents movement. Keep photographs of the card and package in case a claim is necessary.
A practical submission checklist
- Confirm the exact card identity, language, variant, and approximate raw and graded value.
- Inspect both sides under angled light for centering, whitening, dents, scratches, stains, print lines, and alterations.
- Check the current service page for an open tier, value limit, fee, minimum quantity, and estimated business or working days.
- Read the grader’s packaging and declared-value instructions; use the specified semi-rigid or other holder.
- Complete the form accurately, save the order number, and retain a copy of the invoice.
- Package securely, insure for the appropriate amount, and use a tracked carrier.
- When the card returns, verify the certification, label, holder, and card identity before storing or listing it for sale.
What the grade can—and cannot—tell you
The grade communicates how one company assessed authenticity and condition at one point in time. It does not guarantee a sale price, eliminate differences in eye appeal, or make grades from different companies interchangeable. For a sales decision, use completed transactions for the same card and exact grade, then account for every submission and selling cost. For collecting, choose the service whose standards, holder, label, price, and current availability best match how you intend to keep the card.
The Bottom Line
Choose the grader and tier by card value, condition, goal, current availability, and total cost—not by the grade number alone. Verify live terms immediately before shipping.
