Play FORE’s developer says the iPhone golf game reads swing speed and wrist roll as you swing the phone, then turns that movement into a shot. Apple’s Core Motion framework can provide motion updates at around 100 Hz or more on supported hardware, but the developer has not said that FORE itself samples at 100 Hz. The distinction matters: Apple documents the framework’s capabilities, while the game’s exact sampling rate and swing-detection method remain undisclosed.
What Play FORE says it reads
In a first-party Reddit post, the developer describes holding an iPhone like an 8-iron and swinging toward an island green. The post says the game uses the phone’s movement to read swing speed and wrist roll, then turns that input into a shot. That is the developer’s description of the game, not an independently verified account of its performance. Read the developer’s post on Reddit.

The description establishes the input features and intended result, but not how the app calculates them. It does not explain how a swing is segmented, how the phone is calibrated, what thresholds are used, or how the measured movement affects the shot. Nor does it report accuracy against a measured real-world swing.

Core Motion is Apple’s framework for accessing motion and environment-related information from device hardware. Apple distinguishes raw sensor readings from processed device-motion data. The processed service combines sensor inputs to provide a device’s attitude, unbiased rotation rate, gravity, user acceleration and magnetic-field data. An app can use these signals to interpret how a device is oriented and moving. Apple’s processed device-motion documentation also gives a golf-swing example: an app can choose a horizontal reference orientation with a vertical z-axis, then measure changes from the device’s starting position. That illustrates one possible setup; it does not confirm that FORE uses it.

Knowing which signals Core Motion can provide does not reveal how a particular game combines or filters them. FORE’s developer names swing speed and wrist roll, but has not published the underlying signal processing or the mapping from motion to shot outcome.
What the 100 Hz figure does—and does not—say
Hertz (Hz) describes frequency: 100 Hz means 100 updates per second. It is a sampling or update rate, not a score for accuracy or realism. Apple’s processed device-motion documentation says the maximum update frequency depends on the hardware and is usually at least 100 Hz. In its 2023 WWDC presentation, Apple describes CMMotionManager as providing data on a per-sample basis at a maximum supported frequency of 100 Hz. These are framework-level statements; neither establishes the rate FORE requests or receives.

The careful formulation is that Apple’s Core Motion APIs can provide motion data at about 100 Hz or more on supported hardware, while FORE’s developer says the game reads swing speed and wrist roll. The rate configured by the game is not publicly stated in the cited developer description. Apple Developer Documentation and Apple’s WWDC23 session, “What’s new in Core Motion” describe API capability, not FORE’s implementation.

Apple’s WWDC23 presentation also demonstrates CMBatchedSensorManager, a different interface intended for workout-centered uses where very high sampling rates are helpful and tight delivery latency is not required. Apple describes rates of up to 200 Hz for device motion and 800 Hz for accelerometer data on supported Apple Watch devices. Its example requires an active HealthKit workout and identifies Apple Watch Series 8 and Apple Watch Ultra support. Nothing in the developer’s description indicates that FORE uses this API; it is useful only as context for the range of motion-capture approaches Apple offers.

In Apple’s baseball-swing illustration, an accelerometer signal at 800 Hz is used to identify impact, while rotation relative to gravity in 200 Hz device-motion data is used to identify the swing’s start. Apple compares 80 accelerometer data points with 10 in a 0.1-second interval at 800 Hz versus 100 Hz. Those figures illustrate the presentation’s example, not a Play FORE test or result. Apple notes that batched delivery suits cases where high-rate data matters more than immediate, sample-by-sample delivery.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What is still unknown about FORE
- Sampling rate: the developer’s post does not state whether FORE requests or receives 100 Hz updates.
- Compatibility: the post identifies an iPhone game but does not specify supported iPhone models, a minimum iOS version or a required accessory.
- Shot calculation: the post names swing speed and wrist roll, but does not describe calibration, swing classification or how those measurements change a shot.
- Validation: the available description does not report a comparison with measured swings or an independent accuracy evaluation.
For anyone assessing a sports-motion feature, the relevant questions are not just the headline sampling rate. Hardware support, whether data arrives sample by sample or in batches, which motion signals are used, and how the app’s own algorithm is validated all affect what the feature can do. Apple documents its framework capabilities and examples; the game-specific details listed above have not been disclosed in the developer post.

- ZERO ANNUAL FEES + ENVIRONMENTAL SENSORS: Enjoy a great app with zero subscription required! One-time download, lifetime use, and all features are fully accessible. Built-in temperature, humidity, and barometric pressure modules automatically adjust your shot data to real-time conditions. This provides improved accuracy for both indoor and outdoor training with absolutely no hidden fees.
- EXPANDED METRICS & SPACE REQUIREMENT: Tracks Attack Angle, Launch Angle, Spin Rate, Ball Speed, and Club Speed for detailed swing insights. Perfect for indoor/outdoor use (Note: Does not measure horizontal club face angle or swing path). IMPORTANT: Indoor use requires at least 15ft of total space (place the device exactly 5ft behind the ball, allowing 10ft of ball flight) to ensure accurate radar tracking.
- MULTI-ANGLE PRACTICE VIEWS & SMART ALERTS: Review your swing using fixed multi-angle practice views, including 45° and 90° perspectives, along with shot trajectory display for easier swing evaluation. Select the correct club before each swing for more consistent data. If a shank or missed shot is detected, the device provides an alert and records club speed only to avoid inaccurate shot data.
- PERSONALIZED TRAINING & DISTANCE CALIBRATION: Accurately tracks Carry Distance with verified ±1 yard tolerance under recommended alignment. It also features a Distance Compensation function, allowing you to fine-tune yardage from 80% to 120% (default 100%) for each specific club. Once calibrated, your data will align measured carry distances with your typical on-course performance both indoors and outdoors.
- PREMIUM METAL BODY & SMART APP EXPERIENCE: Features an OLED display and a durable metal body (For optimal Bluetooth connection, please place your phone in front of the device). The app supports real-time voice feedback, and you can easily double-click the power button to mute or unmute the device sound at any time.
