To send a watch face from your phone, open the Google Pixel Watch app, tap Watch faces, choose or edit a face, and tap Use on watch. You can also change faces directly on the watch. This is an apply-and-send workflow, not a documented promise of continuous, instant two-way mirroring. Transfers to a new phone and restores to a replacement watch are separate processes with their own sync and backup behavior.
What “sync” means on Pixel Watch
Pixel Watch face syncing involves several different actions that are easy to confuse:
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
- Applying a face from the phone: the Pixel Watch app acts as a control surface. You select a face, adjust available options, and send it to the connected watch with Use on watch.
- Changing a face on the watch: you select or edit a face locally using the watch’s touch interface.
- Moving a watch to a new phone: Google provides a Wear OS 4 transfer process. Faces can take time to appear after the transfer completes.
- Setting up a replacement watch: a backup can restore the previous watch face along with apps, data, settings, and tiles.
Google’s instructions describe applying the phone selection to the watch. They do not say that every edit continuously mirrors in both directions, and they do not publish a routine face-change propagation time. Treat “sync” as the result of a specific action rather than as one universal background service.

Change the Pixel Watch face from your phone
The phone method is useful when you want to browse a larger gallery or adjust colors and complications more comfortably.
#1 Best Overall
- The new Google Pixel Watch 5 offers a smarter way to a healthier you.[1,2]; Designed for Gemini Intelligence, get proactive help, and personalized insights from Google Health[3,4]; watch is compatible with Android devices only; not compatible with iOS devices
- Precision-crafted to do it all: The Google Pixel Watch 5 features the domed Actua 360 display with scratch-resistant Gorilla Glass and up to 40 hours of battery life[1,5]
- Metrics that matter: Advanced sensors help you stay ahead of your health and wellness; and Google Pixel’s most accurate heart rate tracking is fine-tuned for your activity[6,7]
- Understand your sleep like never before: Your watch captures insights like the time spent in sleep stages to breathing regularity, then summarizes it all in a personalized Sleep Score[8,9]
- Detects loss of pulse, then calls for help: Pixel Watch 5 is the only smartwatch to feature Loss of Pulse Detection, which can prompt a call to emergency services[10]
- Open the Google Pixel Watch app on your phone.
- Tap Watch faces.
- Browse the available faces and tap the one you want to use.
- Tap Edit if you want to change supported colors or complications.
- Tap Use on watch to apply the selection to the connected watch.
The final button matters: choosing or editing a face in the gallery is not the same as applying it. The documented phone workflow sends the chosen configuration to the watch when you tap Use on watch. If you only preview a face or leave the editor without applying it, the watch should not be expected to change.
Google’s complete instructions are in Change the watch face, background, and other settings on Pixel Watch.
Change or edit a face directly on the watch
You do not need to use the phone for ordinary face selection.

- Swipe through the available faces.
- Tap the face you want to use.
To modify a face, choose Edit before saving the change. Depending on the face, editing can include colors and complications. This watch-side action changes the face on the watch itself; it is a different starting point from selecting a face in the phone app.

Phone selection versus watch selection
| Workflow | Where you start | What you do | What Google documents |
|---|---|---|---|
| Apply a standard face | Pixel Watch app | Watch faces → choose or edit a face → Use on watch | The phone selection is sent to the watch. |
| Apply a face locally | Pixel Watch | Touch and hold the current face → swipe → tap a face | The selected face is used directly on the watch. |
| Edit locally | Pixel Watch | Open the face chooser, select Edit, then adjust supported options | Colors and complications can be adjusted where the face supports them. |
These workflows should not be interpreted as proof of a permanent two-way mirror. Google’s help documentation explains how to apply a choice, but does not promise that an edit made in every location is continuously reflected in the other interface.
Set a Photos watch face
A personal-photo face has extra requirements and a separate setup path. Google says the Pixel Watch app on the phone and Google Photos on both the phone and watch should be up to date.
- Update the Pixel Watch app on the phone.
- Update Google Photos on the phone and on the watch.
- Open the Pixel Watch app and tap Watch faces.
- Tap Add new, then choose Photos.
- Select the pictures you want to use. Google’s documented limit is up to 30 photos.
- Tap Add, then tap Save.
Google also documents starting the Photos-face process from the watch. The important distinction is that a Photos face depends on Google Photos being current on both devices, while a standard gallery face does not have that same documented photo-app requirement.

- Train smarter with 40+ exercise modes and real-time stats on your wrist[8]; and with high-precision dual-frequency GPS, you get more accurate route tracking on runs and hikes[1]
- On the watch, open Settings → System and start the transfer; or, on the old phone, open the Pixel Watch app and go to System → Transfer watch → Start transfer.
- On the new phone, add the watch in the Pixel Watch app.
- Complete the pairing and transfer prompts shown by the app.
After the transfer finishes, Google warns: Watch faces may take some time to sync after Watch Transfer is completed.
The warning applies specifically to the transfer process. Google does not give a number of minutes or hours, so there is no official countdown to use when judging a normal face change or a completed transfer.
For the full transfer sequence, see How to upgrade your Pixel Watch or connected phone without losing data.
Restore faces when replacing the watch
A replacement-watch setup uses a backup rather than the same-watch-to-new-phone transfer described above. Google says the backup can restore the old watch’s apps, data, settings, watch face, and tiles to the new watch.
Prepare the old watch
- Connect the watch to Wi-Fi.
- Place it on its charger.
- Turn on Backup in the phone app.
Google says a backup can take up to a few days. Because of that, it recommends starting the backup a few days before you begin the transfer or replacement process.

- Stay on top of activity, calories burned, and more with Fitbit activity tracking
- Track your heart rate and get insight into your sleep
- Save time with things like Google Wallet for contactless payments, turn-by-turn directions using Maps, and event notifications from Calendar
- Stay connected and productive wherever you go; respond to messages, manage your inbox, and make calls right from your wrist
Set up the replacement watch
- Begin setup of the replacement Pixel Watch.
- When asked, choose the available backup from the old watch.
- Complete setup and allow the restoration to finish.
The restored face is part of the broader backup restoration. This is different from a live face edit: the watch is being rebuilt from saved data during setup.
Three workflows compared
| Situation | Starting point | Requirements or path | Face behavior documented by Google |
|---|---|---|---|
| Change the current face | Phone app or watch | Phone: Watch faces → edit if needed → Use on watch. Watch: touch and hold → swipe → tap. | Phone choices are applied to the watch; watch choices are made locally. |
| Keep the same watch while changing phones | Old phone, watch, and new phone | Wear OS 4; start Transfer watch from the watch or old phone, then add the watch on the new phone. | Faces may take some time to sync after transfer completion. |
| Set up a replacement watch | Old watch backup and replacement-watch setup | Wi-Fi, charger, Backup enabled; select the backup during setup. | Apps, data, settings, watch face, and tiles can be restored. |
| Create a personal-photo face | Pixel Watch app and Google Photos | Keep the Pixel Watch app and Google Photos current on the phone and watch; select up to 30 photos. | Use the Photos flow, then tap Add and Save. |
Why a face may not appear immediately
You edited the face but did not apply it
In the phone app, confirm that you tapped Use on watch after editing. The documented workflow treats that button as the action that sends the selection to the watch.
The watch is being transferred to a new phone
Use the transfer process rather than trying to pair the watch as if it were a brand-new device. After a successful transfer, allow time for faces to sync; Google specifically cautions that this can take some time, without stating an exact duration.

You are creating a Photos face
Update the Pixel Watch app and Google Photos on both devices before trying again. The Photos workflow is separate from the ordinary face gallery and allows up to 30 selected photos.
The app or watch software is outdated
Google recommends keeping the watch software and apps, the phone, and the Pixel Watch app updated. It says current software can help with pairing issues and app errors. Check for updates on all relevant devices before treating a face problem as a synchronization failure. The official help pages do not provide a dedicated, step-by-step face-sync failure checklist beyond these update and transfer requirements.
Google’s update guidance is available in Install & update apps on Google Pixel Watch.
What Google does not promise
- There is no published numeric wait time for an ordinary face change.
- There is no documented guarantee that phone and watch edits continuously mirror each other in both directions.
- The phrase “may take some time to sync” is tied to completing Watch Transfer, not presented as a universal rule for every face edit.
- Google’s help pages do not establish that a particular face will appear instantly after every app-side change.
That distinction explains why the phone app can be the place where you configure a face, while the watch remains the place where you can browse and select faces independently. For a routine change, use the documented apply action. For a phone migration, follow Transfer watch. For a replacement device, rely on the backup-and-restore path.
Quick Recap
A practical decision guide
- Want a different face right now? Use the watch’s touch-and-hold chooser, or use Watch faces in the phone app and tap Use on watch.
- Want to customize colors or complications? Tap Edit in the relevant face flow before applying it.
- Want personal pictures? Update Google Photos on both devices, select Photos from Add new, choose up to 30 images, and save.
- Keeping the watch but changing phones? Confirm Wear OS 4 and use Transfer watch.
- Replacing the watch? Start a Wi-Fi backup on the charger ahead of time, then select that backup during setup.
- Seeing a delay after transfer? Google allows for a delay but publishes no fixed duration; verify that the transfer and pairing completed before taking further action.
