Pipe bends, valves, and fittings disturb the velocity profile of flowing water. The resulting separation, secondary motion, and mixing dissipate mechanical energy, creating a local pressure loss. The amount depends on the component’s geometry, flow path, and operating position—not merely on the presence of a joint.
Why fittings disturb flowing water
In a straight, uniform pipe, flow develops a characteristic velocity profile. A bend redirects the water; a contraction or expansion changes its speed and profile; and a valve forces flow through an internal passage. Those changes can separate the flow from a surface and create mixing and cross-stream motion. The disturbed flow eventually dissipates energy, which engineers account for as a local loss.

Bends
Water does not turn uniformly through an elbow. The velocity distribution changes around the bend, and secondary motion can form downstream. Bend radius and construction affect the disturbance: a long-radius elbow generally creates less loss than a sharp mitered elbow under comparable conditions. ASHRAE’s 2024 Fluid Flow chapter describes bend-induced secondary motion that may take up to 100 conduit diameters to die out; it reports that the pressure gradient settles sooner, after about 50 diameters. These are handbook observations, not universal design distances for every pipe and flow.

A valve’s internal geometry disrupts flow even when open. Partly closing it narrows the passage and intensifies the disturbance, so its local loss can rise sharply. A throttled valve is therefore not equivalent to an open valve of the same type.

Other fittings
Reducers, expansions, tees, and similar components change flow area or direction, often causing profile distortion, separation, and mixing. In a tee, the loss also depends on whether the water continues straight through or turns into the branch. ASHRAE discusses fitting geometry and loss coefficients in its 2024 Pipe and Tube Design chapter.
How to distinguish local loss from pressure change
Engineers use “local loss” for the irreversible mechanical-energy loss associated with a component. Turbulence is a flow phenomenon; pressure or head loss is the engineering accounting for energy dissipated by that phenomenon. They are related, but not every measured static-pressure decrease is an irreversible loss.

Static pressure can also change because flow accelerates through a smaller area or because elevation changes. NIST’s July 2024 Technical Note 2294 explains the distinction between static pressure drop and pressure loss. Include acceleration and elevation in the system energy balance, but do not count them again as fitting loss.

Δp = KρV²/2
For head loss, use h = K V²/(2g). Here, K is the fitting loss coefficient, ρ is fluid density, V is the appropriate reference velocity, and g is gravitational acceleration. Use the velocity and coefficient convention specified by the coefficient’s source; state the fluid conditions and source when reporting a result.

- Size: 1/2" NPT male x 1/2" NPT male, 2" length (50mm).
- Working Temperature: Range from -65 to 250 degrees F.
- Working Pressure: 150 PSI. Maximum working pressure 435 psi/3Mpa.
- Material: This nipple pipe fitting is made of quality 304 stainless steel, corrosion resistant ductility at high temperatures, low magnetic permeability, last long service life.
- Function: Pipe thread connection, commonly applied in connecting, terminating, controlling flow and changing direction of pipe.
Δp = f(L/D)(ρV²/2)
Here, f is the friction factor appropriate to the flow regime and pipe, L is pipe length, and D is pipe diameter. Add distributed pipe friction and component losses consistently in the system energy balance. Equivalent pipe length is another estimation method, but its assumptions must match the component and flow being modeled. The EPA EPANET 2 Users Manual also describes local losses in pipe-system calculations.
Illustrative comparison values
ASHRAE’s 2024 handbook tables list the following turbulent-flow examples. They are reference values, not universal constants; actual loss depends on the component and conditions.

| Component and condition | Example K |
|---|---|
| Mitered 90° elbow | 1.3 |
| Short-radius elbow | 0.90 |
| Long-radius elbow | 0.60 |
| Miter elbow with turning vanes | 0.2 |
| Globe valve, open | 10 |
| Gate valve, open | 0.19–0.22 |
| Gate valve, 25% open | 28.8 |
The values show why type and position matter: in this handbook example, a gate valve at 25% open has a much higher K than the open gate valve. Do not treat these values as interchangeable with a manufacturer’s flow coefficient, such as Cv; Cv is a separate convention for relating flow to pressure drop.

Generic tables are useful for estimates, but the coefficient is only meaningful when its component and flow assumptions fit the case. Compare fittings using:
- Geometry, including bend angle and radius.
- Valve type and opening, or the relevant path through a tee.
- Fluid, Reynolds number, and reference velocity.
- Whether the value comes from a manufacturer, a measurement, or a generic table.
- Whether the reported quantity is static pressure change or irreversible loss.
NIST’s June 30, 2022 review of fitting-loss measurement methods and data published from 1926 to 2019 found that most existing data it reviewed were generally not representative of modern fittings and flow conditions. For an important design decision, prefer component-specific manufacturer data or measurements over an unqualified generic value. See the NIST Technical Note 2206 publication record.

NIST’s 2024 plumbing test-facility description reports measuring static pressure at multiple locations with custom piezometer rings, differential-pressure transducers of different ranges, and an automatic pressure-switching system. Pressure distribution along a test section can be used to derive straight-pipe friction and a fitting loss coefficient; this describes laboratory measurement practice, not a requirement for ordinary household plumbing. Details are available in the NIST facility publication record.
