What Kojima has said about PHYSINT and Metal Gear
In comments from a recent Koji10 podcast episode, reported by GamesRadar, Kojima said: “It’s about spies, but I want plenty of new ideas and a different kind of spy action. It’s quite different.” The statement confirms the broad direction he wants, but does not identify specific mechanics, missions, a point of view, or a story premise.

PHYSINT is an original action-espionage project from Kojima Productions, not a confirmed new Metal Gear game. The studio calls it its third original IP and describes it as the culmination of Kojima’s 40-year career as a video game creator; those are the studio’s characterizations, not evidence that the game is complete. The studio’s cast announcement provides that framing.
What is—and is not—known about the difference
The confirmed comparison is narrow: both projects are associated with espionage and action, while Kojima says PHYSINT will pursue new ideas and a different form of spy action. The cited public material does not establish how that intention will translate into play.

Without those details, a feature-by-feature comparison would be speculation. “Different” is Kojima’s stated aim, not a description of confirmed systems.
PHYSINT’s announcement, partner and cast
Kojima Productions announced PHYSINT as a new action-espionage game on 31 January 2024, in partnership with Sony Interactive Entertainment. That announcement described ambitions for a cinematic approach using technology and a cast, and for blurring the boundaries between film and games; these were aims at announcement, not confirmed final features. The partnership picture subsequently changed. On 10 September 2026, Kojima Productions said PHYSINT’s journey would continue with Xbox, and Xbox Wire described the expanded partnership as covering publication. These are the latest partner announcements cited here; they do not specify a complete platform list or exclusivity terms. Kojima Productions’ update and Xbox Wire’s announcement give the details.
On 17 September 2026, Kojima Productions announced Bill Skarsgård in the lead role and unveiled a poster featuring him with Charlee Fraser. The studio also named Don Lee and Minami Hamabe as members of the ensemble. It said costume fittings, scans, and camera tests with Skarsgård and Fraser took place earlier in 2026. The official announcements cited here do not provide a release date. The September 2026 Xbox partnership announcement also does not, on its own, establish which platforms PHYSINT will launch on or whether it will be exclusive to any platform. Treat any specific date or platform claim as unconfirmed unless supported by a later official announcement.

If you want context for the comparison, Konami’s METAL GEAR SOLID: MASTER COLLECTION Vol. 1 gathers the beginning of the series, including Metal Gear Solid, Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty, and Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater, along with earlier games and bonus content.
