Over time, those records may reveal routines and recurring destinations—but they do not prove who carried the phone, why it was there, or what happened at a location. The data comes from specific features and settings, not one universal “location history” switch.
What “phone location history” means
Location history is a record that a device or service may build from location signals. Depending on the feature and its settings, the record may contain time-stamped places, routes, and visit frequency. Google Maps Timeline and Apple’s Significant Locations & Routes are separate examples; app permissions and other account activity settings are separate again.

A phone estimates its location using inputs such as GPS, Bluetooth, nearby Wi-Fi hotspots, and cell towers. Apple also notes that an app or website may approximate location from an IP address, even when Location Services is off. A history entry is therefore an estimate about a device—not conclusive proof of a person’s identity or activity. Apple’s Location Services documentation explains the location sources and controls.

What Google Maps Timeline records
Google describes Timeline as a personal map of places a user has been and routes or trips taken. It is off by default for a Google Account and requires opt-in. When enabled, it regularly saves precise device location to Timeline on each device where the user is signed in and Timeline is on, even when Google apps are not in use. See Google Maps Timeline Help for its current description.

Google says Timeline can support personalized experiences such as commute notifications and may be used to improve or develop Google services, including advertising products. Google says businesses receive estimates for ad effectiveness, not a person’s raw Timeline data. Google also says that after it identifies visits to certain particularly personal places—such as medical facilities, counseling centers, domestic violence shelters, abortion clinics, fertility centers, or addiction-treatment facilities—it deletes those visits from Timeline soon afterward. That safeguard is specific to Timeline; other settings may still retain searches, interactions, or photos related to a place.
What Apple’s Significant Locations & Routes records
Apple says Significant Locations & Routes can keep places recently visited, how often and when they were visited, and routes taken. The feature is available on an iPhone and other devices signed in to iCloud. Apple says the information supports personalized services such as Photos Memories and predictive route suggestions. Its description is in Apple’s Significant Locations & Routes documentation.

Apple says Significant Locations & Routes are synced between devices using end-to-end encryption that Apple cannot read. Apple’s Maps privacy page also says many personalized features are created on-device and that Maps data sent to Apple is associated with random identifiers rather than the user’s identity. Those statements describe the features and data Apple discusses; they do not establish how every app with location permission handles its data. See Apple Maps & Privacy.
What a location timeline can reveal—and what it cannot
Repeated time-stamped locations can make patterns visible: where a device regularly spends nights, a recurring commute, frequent destinations, or changes in routine. That is an inference from the kinds of records Google and Apple say their features can retain. A single point is less informative and may be imprecise; even a repeated pattern does not establish a person’s reason for visiting a place or prove that the account holder was carrying the device.

A 2022 study by Giancarlos Parady, Keita Suzuki, Yuki Oyama, and Makoto Chikaraishi tested detection of four-person group activities using simulated daily schedules with joint activities. The authors reported detection rates of 22% to 60%, from the strictest to less strict spatiotemporal accuracy criteria, and markedly worse performance for iPhones than Android devices in that experiment. These are results for the study’s simulated schedules and criteria, not a general accuracy rate for phone histories or a measure of how reliably they identify people or activities. The study’s abstract and publication details provide its scope.
Why turning off one setting may not stop location-related records
Timeline, device Location Services, app permissions, and account activity controls are not interchangeable. Google says Timeline is separate from Web & App Activity and Search Services History; other Google products or IP-based signals may still save location information when Timeline is off. Turning off Timeline stops that feature from adding records, not every possible location-related record across a Google account or the wider internet. Google describes the distinctions in its account activity controls documentation.

Likewise, disabling Apple Location Services limits location information available to apps and system services, but does not prevent every possible estimate based on IP addresses or other information. A setting’s effect depends on which record and service you are trying to control.
How to review and manage location records
Google accounts
- Open Google Maps and review Timeline for the account and devices you use. Check whether Timeline is enabled and whether saved visits and routes match what you expect.
- Review Google Account activity controls separately, including Web & App Activity and Search Services History. Their controls are distinct from Timeline.
- Delete Timeline entries or configure available retention controls if you want less history stored. Google says some account-associated controls offer auto-delete periods such as 3, 18, or 36 months; the available choices can change, so confirm them in your account.
Google’s Timeline help page and activity controls page describe the features and their controls. Deleting Timeline is not the same as deleting every location-related activity in Google products.

Apple devices
- On iPhone, open Settings > Privacy & Security > Location Services to review the global switch and per-app permissions.
- Review location-based System Services in that area, including the Significant Locations & Routes control. Menu wording can vary by iOS version.
- Disable Location Services globally, or change access for individual apps and services, according to what you want to limit. Review each app separately rather than assuming one change controls every service.
Apple documents these controls in its Location Services guide. A global switch is not a guarantee that no service can infer an approximate location by other means.
How to compare the two history features
| Question | Google Maps Timeline | Apple Significant Locations & Routes |
|---|---|---|
| What can it record? | Places, routes, and trips; Google says it regularly saves precise device location when enabled. Google | Recently visited places, visit frequency and timing, and routes. Apple |
| Is it opt-in? | Off by default for a Google Account; the user must turn it on. Google | Apple’s cited documentation describes the feature and its controls; it does not state an equivalent default in the material cited here. Apple |
| Where is it handled? | Saved to Timeline on signed-in devices where Timeline is enabled. Google | Apple says Significant Locations & Routes sync between devices using end-to-end encryption Apple cannot read. Apple |
| What does the provider say it is used for? | Personalized experiences such as commute notifications, and improvement or development of Google services, including advertising products. Google | Personalized services such as Photos Memories and predictive route suggestions. Apple |
| Can other settings retain location-related information? | Yes. Web & App Activity, Search Services History, other products, and IP-based signals are separate considerations. Google | App permissions and system services are separately configurable; IP-based estimates may remain possible. Apple |
Neither provider’s feature alone determines a person’s overall privacy. The answer depends on the device, account settings, backups, apps with permission, and what information you are trying to protect.
