How Persona 5: The Phantom X’s Gacha and Character-Banner System Works

Persona 5: The Phantom X (P5X) uses summon banners called Contracts. The headline pity rule in the current main system is a 5★ on the 80th draw if the previous 79 draws produced none. If that 5★ is a non-featured Phantom Thief, the next 5★ is guaranteed to be the banner’s Most Wanted character. A newer system described by SEGA guarantees the Most Wanted 5★ by the 110th draw instead.

Those rules are not universal across every server or banner. P5X also has separate Chance and Targeted drawing systems, independent character and weapon counters, and version-specific rollouts. Always open the exact Contract in your client and tap Drop Rates before spending.

What P5X Contracts, 5★ pity and Most Wanted mean

P5X does not call its gacha banners wishes or summons; the in-game term is Contract. Each Contract identifies a reward pool, a Most Wanted (featured) Phantom Thief or weapon, its drawing system and the counter used for the next guaranteed 5★.

A 5★ is the top rarity referenced in the official rules. Your pity count is the number of draws since the last relevant 5★. A 5★ Phantom Thief or weapon resets the applicable guaranteed-5★ counter immediately, so the count is never a permanent account-wide total.

The official support guidance does not publish one permanent percentage table for every Contract and region. To see the probabilities that apply to your banner, open the Contract screen, select the banner, and tap Drop Rates. Treat that panel, rather than a third-party rate chart, as the authority for the live event.

How the main and newer pity systems guarantee a character

SEGA’s 15 August 2025 operations letter describes two systems. They are counted separately and can have different rates, so do not combine their numbers when comparing banners.

System named by SEGA Guaranteed-5★ trigger What happens to the featured character Counter relationship
Current Main Contracts System If the previous 79 draws contained no 5★, draw 80 guarantees a 5★. If that 5★ is a non-Most-Wanted Phantom Thief, the next 5★ is guaranteed to be Most Wanted. Counted separately from the New Contracts System.
New Contracts System If the previous 109 draws contained no 5★, draw 110 guarantees a 5★. The 5★ obtained is guaranteed to be the Most Wanted character. Separate counter and rates from the Current Main system.

These are maximums under the stated rules, not promises that every player needs exactly that many draws. A 5★ can appear earlier, at which point the relevant counter resets.

Current Main: the practical 80-then-guarantee sequence

Suppose you have made 73 draws on an eligible Current Main Contract without a 5★. Seven more draws reach the 80th, which is guaranteed to produce a 5★ if no earlier 5★ appears. That 5★ may be the Most Wanted character or another 5★ Phantom Thief. If it is off-banner, the next 5★ on that same applicable character counter is guaranteed Most Wanted.

Under those stated rules, a player starting from zero could need as many as 160 draws to force the featured character: up to 80 draws for the first 5★, followed by up to another 80 for the guaranteed Most-Wanted 5★ after an off-banner result. This is a worst-case calculation, not a published average or a universal cash cost.

New Contracts: a direct 110-draw Most Wanted guarantee

On a New Contracts banner, 109 consecutive draws without a 5★ make draw 110 a guaranteed 5★, and the operations letter says that 5★ is guaranteed to be Most Wanted. No separate off-banner step is needed under that description. Because the New and Current Main counters are separate, progress on one cannot be assumed to shorten the other.

How Chance and Targeted differ

Most Wanted Phantom Idol Contracts can use one of two drawing systems. The support article calls them Chance and Targeted. They are not interchangeable labels for the same pity counter.

Comparison Chance Targeted
Featured-character certainty A 5★ within the contract’s stated window may be outside the Most Wanted lineup. After an off-lineup 5★, the next 5★ is guaranteed Most Wanted. Every 5★ Phantom Thief is guaranteed to come from the Most Wanted lineup.
Maximum threshold shown in the support description An 80-draw window is described; confirm the exact live threshold in the Contract text. The support summary does not state a separate numerical maximum; use the threshold displayed by the live Contract.
Can an off-banner 5★ occur? Yes. The first 5★ can be non-Most-Wanted. No, according to the definition of Targeted.
Counter sharing Uses a separate counter from Targeted. Uses a separate counter from Chance.

Do not describe Chance as an automatic 50/50. Players often use “50/50” as shorthand for the possibility of losing the featured roll, but the official support wording does not promise a 50-percent split. The exact probability belongs in the banner’s Drop Rates panel.

What happens if you lose the 50/50?

If “losing” means receiving a non-Most-Wanted 5★ on a Chance Contract, that result is not wasted pity. It activates the guarantee that the next 5★ will be Most Wanted. The guarantee applies to the next 5★ event, not necessarily to your next single draw; you could obtain that 5★ immediately or only when the contract’s pity threshold is reached.

For example, an off-banner 5★ on draw 25 resets the counter. The next 5★ is then featured, but the rules do not say it must arrive within a fixed number of draws unless the live Contract specifies that threshold. Keep pulling on the same counter if you want to use the guarantee; changing to a separate counter does not transfer it.

Does pity carry over?

Carryover in P5X is family-specific. The official counter guidance makes three distinctions that matter when you switch banners.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Character Contracts and Arms Deals are separate

Most Wanted Phantom Idol Contracts and Arms Deals use separate guaranteed-5★ counters. Pity accumulated while recruiting a character should not be assumed to apply to a weapon Contract, and weapon progress should not be treated as character progress.

Different Most Wanted character Contract types share a character counter

The support guidance says different Most Wanted character Contract types share their character counter. That means a qualifying character-banner change can preserve the character count when the Contract types belong to that shared family. Read the counter shown on the destination banner rather than relying on memory.

Chance and Targeted do not share a counter

Chance and Targeted contracts use separate counters even though both concern Most Wanted characters. A Chance count cannot be merged with a Targeted count, and switching between them can leave your expected pity on the original banner family.

Character Contracts versus Arms Deals

Contract family Primary reward Pity-counter family Drawing-system rules
Most Wanted Phantom Idol or other character Contract 5★ Phantom Thieves and the banner’s Most Wanted character. Character counter; character Contract types may share it, while Chance and Targeted remain separate. Can be Chance or Targeted, depending on the banner. Read the live Contract rules.
Arms Deal Weapons, including 5★ weapons where offered. Separate Arms Deal counter; it does not use character pity. Only one drawing system is defined for Arms Deals in the support guidance.

A 5★ weapon resets the relevant weapon guarantee, just as a 5★ Phantom Thief resets the relevant character guarantee. The reset does not create a carryover between those families.

Where to check the exact rates and rules

  1. Open the game’s Contract screen.
  2. Select the specific character or weapon banner you intend to use.
  3. Tap Drop Rates to view the applicable probabilities.
  4. Read the banner’s rule text for its system name, Most Wanted lineup and guaranteed-draw threshold.
  5. Check the visible pity counter and note whether the banner is a Current Main, New, Chance, Targeted or Arms Deal Contract.

This procedure matters because there is no single stable web table covering every Contract, server and patch. A rate or threshold copied from another region may not describe the banner in your client.

How many pulls guarantee the character?

The answer depends on the Contract displayed in front of you:

  • Current Main: draw 80 guarantees a 5★ after 79 misses; if that 5★ is off-banner, the following 5★ is guaranteed Most Wanted. The worst-case featured-character path is therefore up to two 80-draw cycles under the stated rules.
  • New: draw 110 guarantees a 5★ after 109 misses, and that 5★ is guaranteed Most Wanted.
  • Chance: an off-lineup 5★ can occur in the stated 80-draw window, after which the next 5★ is guaranteed Most Wanted. Confirm the exact threshold and rates in the live banner.
  • Targeted: every 5★ Phantom Thief is Most Wanted, but the support summary does not publish a separate universal numerical maximum. Use the threshold and counter displayed by your Contract.

These figures describe draws, not currency or money. The number of tickets or premium currency required for a draw can vary by event and is not established by the Contract rules above, so calculate your budget from the current in-game exchange and avoid assuming a fixed cash price.

Regional and version differences

The operations team has acknowledged differences among the Chinese/Asia, Japanese and Western versions. It also said the newer guaranteed-Most-Wanted system was being adjusted for Japanese and Western release. A December 2025 interview reported that an improved banner guaranteeing the character after 110 pulls had been added following player feedback.

Those statements describe a rollout that can differ by server and patch. A banner available in one region may use a different system, rate or name in another. Before every spending decision, verify the current Contract text and Drop Rates panel in your own client; do not infer live behavior from an older screenshot or another server.

Planning pulls without misreading pity

Record the counter before switching banners

Write down the displayed count and the last 5★ result before leaving a Contract. If the result was off-banner on a Chance-style character Contract, the next 5★ guarantee is valuable only on the counter family that carries it.

Separate your character and weapon budgets

Because Arms Deals have their own counter, decide independently how many draws you can spend on weapons. Character pity cannot serve as a fallback for a weapon target, and vice versa.

Use the live threshold, not a remembered number

An 80-draw rule from a Current Main or Chance Contract does not establish a 110-draw rule for every banner, nor does the New system replace the old counter. Read the current banner’s label before calculating how many draws remain.

Troubleshooting an unexpected result

“My pity did not carry over.”

Check whether you moved between character and weapon Contracts, or between Chance and Targeted. Those families have separate counters. If you changed character Contract types, inspect the destination counter to confirm whether it belongs to the shared character family.

“I reached the limit and got an off-banner 5★.”

That behavior is consistent with the Current Main or Chance rules when the first guaranteed 5★ can be non-Most-Wanted. The next 5★, on the same applicable counter, is the one guaranteed to be Most Wanted.

“Another guide says the odds are always 50/50.”

Use the Drop Rates panel instead. Chance permits an off-lineup 5★ followed by a Most-Wanted guarantee, but the official wording does not establish a universal 50-percent split.

“The banner in my region has different numbers.”

Regional and patch differences are documented. Confirm the server, version and Contract rules shown in your client before drawing, and treat an older operations statement as historical context rather than a substitute for the live panel.

Key points to remember

  • P5X summon banners are called Contracts, and exact rates are shown under each Contract’s Drop Rates button.
  • The Current Main system guarantees a 5★ on draw 80 after 79 misses; an off-banner 5★ makes the next 5★ Most Wanted.
  • The New system described by SEGA guarantees a Most-Wanted 5★ within 110 draws, using a separate counter.
  • Chance can produce a non-featured 5★ before guaranteeing the next one as Most Wanted; Targeted makes every 5★ Phantom Thief Most Wanted.
  • Character and weapon pity are separate, and Chance and Targeted counters are separate.
  • Server, region and patch can change the live rules, so inspect the banner you are actually about to use.
