Perseverance avoids hazards by combining human route planning with onboard autonomous navigation (AutoNav). Mission planners choose the destination and provide context such as keep-out zones. During a drive, stereo cameras build a local three-dimensional view, onboard software tests possible paths against rocks, trenches, sand-related terrain, wheel-drop risks and low belly-pan clearance, then steers around unsafe geometry while continuing toward the assigned goal.
That is autonomy at the local driving level, not a rover choosing its own mission. People still approve destinations, send commands, review telemetry and identify hazards the cameras or geometric checks may not reveal reliably.

Two layers make Mars driving possible
Perseverance’s driving system works as a partnership between Earth-based planning and onboard decision-making. The distinction matters because radio signals take too long for a person to steer the rover continuously with a joystick. Instead, a team sends a driving objective and constraints, while AutoNav handles many short-range adjustments after the rover begins moving.
| Driving layer | Information used | Typical decision | Decision-maker |
|---|---|---|---|
| Mission route planning | Orbital imagery, rover images, scientific priorities, terrain knowledge and team assessments | Choose the destination, broad route and areas to stay inside or avoid | Human planners and scientists on Earth |
| Onboard AutoNav | Fresh images from the rover’s cameras and a local 3D terrain representation | Select a safer nearby path around an obstacle or risky ground | Perseverance’s flight software while driving |
| Generative-AI waypoint planning | Orbital imagery and terrain-slope data analyzed before a drive | Suggest route waypoints for a planned drive | AI-assisted tools, then human engineers validate commands |
AutoNav therefore does not replace the mission team. It fills the gap between a destination selected on Earth and the exact wheel-by-wheel path needed to reach it safely.

How cameras give Perseverance a view of danger
Hazard Detection Cameras watch the immediate surroundings
Perseverance has six Hazard Detection Cameras, or HazCams: four mounted at the front and two at the rear. NASA describes them as tools for detecting nearby rocks, trenches and sand dunes. Their position gives the rover views close to the wheels and underside, where a seemingly small feature can affect clearance or traction.
Stereo Navigation Cameras add depth
Two stereo Navigation Cameras sit high on the rover’s mast. Each camera sees the scene from a slightly different position. Comparing those images lets onboard processing estimate the distance and shape of ground features, producing depth information rather than a flat photograph. NASA says the Navcams can detect an object about the size of a golf ball from 82 feet (25 meters) away; that figure describes camera visibility, not a guarantee that every object will be recognized as dangerous at that distance.
Images from the HazCams and Navcams complement one another. The mast cameras provide a broader, elevated terrain view, while the lower cameras help inspect the immediate approach and the space around the wheels. Together they supply the observations AutoNav needs to construct a local terrain model.

What AutoNav calculates before choosing a path
From images to a local 3D terrain model
As the rover takes stereo images, its onboard computer converts differences between the paired views into estimates of terrain height and shape. The resulting local map represents slopes, depressions, rocks and other geometric features relative to the rover. Perseverance can capture and process images while moving, a capability NASA engineer Vandi Verma described as “thinking while driving.”
Candidate paths are tested against the rover’s body
AutoNav does not merely ask whether a line on the ground avoids a visible boulder. It evaluates how the entire vehicle would relate to the terrain along that line. A route can be rejected if one wheel would drop too far, if the chassis would approach the ground too closely, or if the shape and slope create an unacceptable geometric risk.

In a NASA/JPL 2023 visualization of boulder avoidance, blue path lines represent a potential wheel drop greater than 14 inches (35 centimeters). Magenta lines represent a possible belly-pan clearance problem. The displayed candidate paths extend 20 feet (6 meters) from the rover. These are the thresholds and distances shown in that animation, not universal limits for every terrain or a promise that the rover can safely cross any feature below them.
Local rerouting keeps the destination
When AutoNav finds that a proposed local path is unsafe, it can select another path around the feature while still aiming at the destination supplied by the mission team. The software is changing the route, not changing the scientific objective. If every nearby option is unsuitable, the rover can stop or await a new plan rather than treating an unsafe route as acceptable.

- Planners define the objective. The team chooses where Perseverance should go, using orbital and rover imagery plus scientific priorities. They can specify keep-in regions the rover should remain within and keep-out regions it must avoid.
- Engineers prepare and transmit commands. Because of the Earth–Mars communication delay, the rover receives a drive plan in batches rather than being continuously steered. The plan includes the destination, motion parameters and any designated constraints.
- The rover observes its surroundings. HazCams and stereo Navcams collect images of the terrain around and ahead of the vehicle. The cameras continue to provide observations as the rover advances.
- Onboard software builds and updates the local map. Stereo processing estimates terrain depth and geometry. New observations can revise the rover’s understanding as previously hidden ground comes into view.
- AutoNav scores possible trajectories. Candidate paths are checked for conditions such as excessive wheel drop, insufficient belly-pan clearance, steep or irregular geometry and direct obstacles.
- The rover drives or reroutes. If the preferred local path is acceptable, Perseverance follows it. If a rock or depression blocks that path, AutoNav can select a safer nearby alternative that still progresses toward the assigned goal.
- Telemetry returns to Earth. The rover reports its status and driving performance. Planners review the results, update the broader route when needed and can add new keep-out areas for subsequent commands.
This sequence explains why a drive can be autonomous without being unsupervised. The rover makes immediate geometric choices, while people remain responsible for mission-level intent and oversight.
Which hazards the system is designed to handle
| Hazard or condition | Why it matters | How it is addressed |
|---|---|---|
| Rocks and boulders | A wheel or the rover’s underside could strike the feature, or the obstacle could force an unstable route. | Camera-based terrain mapping and candidate-path evaluation; AutoNav can route around it. |
| Trenches and depressions | A wheel may drop farther than the suspension or path geometry can safely accommodate. | Depth estimates and wheel-drop checks reject risky trajectories. |
| Sand dunes and loose terrain | Soft ground can trap the rover even when its surface shape appears passable. | Planners can mark suspected sand traps as keep-out zones; local geometric autonomy alone cannot identify every soft-soil risk. |
| Low belly-pan clearance | A route may leave enough room for the wheels but not the rover’s central underside. | AutoNav checks the rover body’s clearance; the 2023 visualization used magenta lines for this condition. |
| Slopes and irregular ground | Uneven geometry can affect stability, wheel contact and the feasibility of a commanded route. | Terrain modeling and route scoring incorporate the shape of the ground before the rover commits locally. |
The documented system is principally a geometric hazard detector. It does not mean Perseverance has complete knowledge of soil strength, hidden voids, every scientific concern or every future weather condition. Human teams add that broader knowledge through route constraints and operational judgment.
Why the rover’s hardware helps it cross difficult ground
Sensing and software work together with a vehicle designed for uneven terrain. Perseverance has six independently driven wheels, steering on both the front and rear wheels, and a rocker-bogie suspension. NASA says the suspension can negotiate obstacles or depressions up to approximately wheel size: 20.7 inches (52.5 centimeters). Its wheels use 48 cleats to improve traction.

Those specifications describe capability, not an instruction to drive over every obstacle of that size. A feature’s shape, approach angle, spacing, slope and surrounding terrain can make it unsafe even when its height is within the suspension’s stated negotiating ability. AutoNav’s checks are what connect the hardware’s mechanical range to the actual path selected on a particular drive.

NASA/JPL documented a drive on July 15, 2023 (sol 854) in which Perseverance identified and avoided a boulder measuring 14 inches (35 centimeters). The accompanying animation showed the rover evaluating lines extending as far as 20 feet (6 meters), with blue lines indicating a wheel-drop risk above 14 inches (35 centimeters) and magenta lines indicating inadequate belly-pan clearance.
The example illustrates an important point: “avoiding a rock” means evaluating the rover’s wheels and underside along a trajectory, not simply recognizing a rock in an image. The rover can preserve forward progress by selecting a path that gives the vehicle acceptable clearance.
How much ground autonomous driving can cover
NASA’s 2022 AutoNav material records drives of 841.7 feet (256.55 meters) on sol 404 and 869.35 feet (264.98 meters) on sol 405. Those are individual documented drives under their stated mission conditions, not a standard daily distance or a general speed guarantee. Terrain complexity, energy, communications planning, science stops and vehicle health all affect how far a particular command sequence can go.
As NASA/JPL rover planner and flight-software developer Mark Maimone put it, “Because autonomous driving is now faster, we can cover more ground than if humans programmed every drive.” The advantage comes from allowing the rover to make many local path decisions without waiting for a separate human instruction for each visible obstacle.

What humans still have to decide
- Where to go: Scientists and planners select destinations and broad traverses based on mission goals.
- What areas to avoid: Teams can draw keep-out zones around suspected sand traps or other hazards that are not safely represented by local geometry.
- How much risk is acceptable: Engineers account for terrain, vehicle state, science priorities and the consequences of stopping or rerouting.
- Whether a command is ready: Commands are checked, transmitted and monitored through telemetry rather than released without operational review.
- What to do next: New imagery and rover status can lead to a revised route or a different destination.
AutoNav is therefore best understood as local autonomy inside a human-defined operating envelope.
The 2026 AI-planned drives are a separate milestone
On January 30, 2026, JPL reported two Perseverance drives whose waypoints were generated with vision-capable generative AI. The system analyzed orbital imagery and terrain-slope information, identified features including bedrock, outcrops, boulder fields and sand ripples, and produced waypoints for a planned drive. Engineers checked the resulting commands in a digital twin before sending them to Mars; JPL says that review covered more than 500,000 telemetry variables.
That demonstration adds an AI-assisted way of creating a broader route. It should not be confused with the established AutoNav loop. Generative-AI waypoint planning uses pre-drive orbital and terrain data to suggest where the rover should travel, while AutoNav uses rover-camera observations during driving to assess nearby geometry and adjust the local path. The two methods can complement one another, but neither removes human validation.
NASA/JPL’s 2026 account cites drives of 689 feet (210 meters) and 807 feet (246 meters) on December 8 and December 10. Those figures belong to the reported AI-planned-drive demonstration and should not be treated as a universal autonomous range or as a replacement for the separate AutoNav hazard-avoidance process.
What “drives itself” really means on Mars
Perseverance can drive itself in the narrow, technically important sense that it can interpret nearby camera data, test geometric trajectories and steer around detected obstacles without a person commanding every turn. It cannot independently define its mission, guarantee that all hazards are visible, or infer every property of Martian soil from geometry alone.
Best Value
The safest summary is a layered one: people decide the destination and boundaries; cameras and onboard computing create a local 3D view; AutoNav checks how candidate paths fit the wheels and body; and the rover reroutes when local terrain makes the first option unsafe. This division lets Perseverance make useful progress despite communication delay while keeping mission-level judgment with its human team.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can Perseverance avoid every rock it encounters?
No. AutoNav is designed to detect and work around many locally visible geometric hazards, but camera visibility, terrain interpretation and soil conditions are limited. Human planners can add keep-out zones for hazards such as suspected sand traps.
Does AutoNav choose Perseverance’s scientific destination?
No. The mission team chooses the destination and broad route. AutoNav makes local path adjustments while trying to reach that assigned goal.
Why are two cameras needed for 3D navigation?
Stereo cameras view the same terrain from slightly different positions. Comparing the images provides depth estimates, allowing onboard software to model terrain shape rather than relying on a single flat image.
What is the difference between the 2026 AI-planned drives and AutoNav?
The 2026 demonstration used generative AI to create waypoints from orbital imagery and slope data before driving, with commands checked in a digital twin. AutoNav uses rover-camera imagery during the drive to assess nearby terrain and reroute locally.
