On the current evidence, though, movement data cannot reveal or diagnose a person’s mental-health condition. It is a behavioral signal that tracks with some symptoms in specific study groups, and its predictive accuracy is moderate at best.
What researchers measure when they study movement
Most studies do not look at a map of someone’s day. They first convert raw location and motion data into summary features, then test whether those features track symptom scores or diagnoses. The main sources are smartphone GPS, which records where a phone is, and accelerometers, which record physical activity. The features that recur across this work include:
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
- Time at home: how much of a day or week is spent at a home location.
- Unique places visited: how many distinct locations a person goes to over a period.
- Location variance and normalized entropy: how widely movements are spread across places and how unpredictable the sequence of visits is.
- Circadian movement: how regular the daily rhythm of movement is from one day to the next.
- Footprint distinctiveness: how recognizably one person’s movement pattern differs from everyone else’s.
Each of these is a measurement choice. A study that counts unique places and a study that measures daily rhythm are not testing the same thing, which matters when comparing results.

What the studies have found
The table below lists the studies that give the clearest picture of what has been reported so far. Each result is limited to the sample and period in which it was measured. The 2015 and 2020 dates are the years of the studies as identified in the source material.
#1 Best Overall
| Study (year) | Participants | Movement data | Outcome measured | Reported result and scope |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Exploratory GPS study (2015, study authors) | Not stated in the source summary | GPS-derived features | Depressive symptom severity | Circadian movement r=-.63 (p=.005); normalized entropy r=-.58 (p=.012); location variance r=-.58 (p=.012). Correlations within that exploratory sample only. |
| Accelerometer and GPS depression study (2020, study authors) | Sample described by the authors; total not stated in the source summary | Accelerometer activity features and GPS movement patterns | Weekly PHQ-9 depression scores | 87.2% accuracy classifying severe depression in that study sample. Not a general accuracy figure for apps or clinical diagnosis. |
| Framework study (2020) | 245 people, including people with schizophrenia | Movement-related measures derived from location data | Differences related to schizophrenia and aging | Time at home and unique places visited were among the readouts sensitive to these differences. |
| Smartphone footprint study (affective instability) | 41 adolescents and young adults aged 17–30 with affective instability | More than 3,000 days of smartphone mobility data | Affective instability and circadian patterns | Mobility features formed individually distinctive patterns. Reduced footprint distinctiveness was associated with affective instability and circadian patterns. Small, specific sample. |
| eB2 case series | Five patients | Smartphone location data | Changes in mobility patterns | Showed that location data could detect changes in mobility patterns. Demonstrates feasibility; does not establish clinical accuracy. |
| GPS case-control study (year not stated in the source summary) | 142 participants: 86 with schizophrenia and 56 healthy comparison participants | GPS mobility measures | Symptoms, cognition, and functioning | Examined how mobility measures relate to these clinical dimensions. Evidence that the approach is being studied, not that GPS can diagnose schizophrenia. |
How to read the correlation figures
The 2015 exploratory study reports correlations, not predictions. A correlation coefficient (r) runs from -1 to 1. The negative signs here mean that higher values of each feature went with lower depressive symptom severity in that sample. A correlation of this size is a notable association, but it describes a group pattern. It does not tell you where any one person sits on the scale, and the source summary does not give the sample size needed to judge how stable these values would be in a different group.
How accurate is prediction?
The most direct official summary comes from the National Institute of Mental Health’s 2024 science update. It describes the best-performing AI model in the underlying work as only moderately accurate overall, and says it performed less reliably for some groups. The same summary reports that associations between mobility and depression risk differed across income-related subgroups.

Accuracy that holds in one sample can fall in another, and the NIMH summary shows that error rates can differ between groups.

What movement data cannot tell you
- It does not diagnose. None of the studies above establishes that a particular amount of time at home, or a particular number of places visited, proves depression or any other condition.
- A pattern has many possible causes. Changes in how much someone goes out can reflect work, weather, illness, caregiving, or a change in routine. A movement signal alone cannot separate these.
- Consumer apps are not validated by these studies. The studies used research-grade data collection in defined samples. No source in this evidence set establishes the accuracy of a consumer app or device for mental-health purposes.
- Intervention effects are not established. The evidence does not show that acting on a movement pattern improves mental health.
If a change in your mood or daily functioning worries you, a clinician can assess it directly. Location data is not a substitute for that assessment.
Privacy: movement can identify you
Location traces raise privacy issues that go beyond the mental-health question. In the 41-person study of adolescents and young adults, individual smartphone mobility footprints were distinctive enough to tell participants apart. A pattern that identifies you can also be linked to you, which makes location data sensitive even when it is not labeled as health data.
