In a 2026 account, its author, kobaltGIT, says the compiled installer is about 3.4 MB and describes how the app checks keyboard context, uses web-based preview plugins, and avoids reading cloud-only OneDrive files. Those size and implementation details are author-reported, not independently verified.
What PeekIt does
PeekIt targets Windows 10 and 11 and aims to make file preview feel familiar to people who use macOS Quick Look: select a file, press Space, and inspect it without first opening a full desktop application. The project account describes support for previewing formats including images, PDFs, code, archives, fonts, 3D models, DOCX documents, spreadsheets, and presentations.

That workflow depends on more than opening a preview window. The utility must recognize when Space is being pressed as a shortcut rather than entered into a filename or another text field, and it must decide how to render different file types.
How the app is put together
kobaltGIT describes a three-part stack: Rust handles the Windows-focused core and low-level keyboard hook, Tauri v2 manages inter-process communication and windows, and Svelte 5 supplies the frontend. The account also identifies WebView2 as the rendering environment for web-based previews.
#1 Best Overall
- KEYBOARD: The keyboard works for Windows with hot keys that enable easy access to Media, My Computer, Mute, Volume up/down, and Calculator
- EASY SETUP: Experience simple installation with the USB wired connection
- VERSATILE COMPATIBILITY: This keyboard is designed to work with multiple Windows versions, including Vista, 7, 8, 10 offering broad compatibility across devices.
- SLEEK DESIGN: The elegant black color of the wired keyboard complements your tech and decor, adding a stylish and cohesive look to any setup without sacrificing function.
- FULL-SIZED CONVENIENCE: The standard QWERTY layout of this keyboard set offers a familiar typing experience, ideal for both professional tasks and personal use.
The author’s stated installer size is about 3.4 MB. In the article, kobaltGIT writes: “The entire compiled installer is just ~3.4 MB.” This is a project-author claim, not a separately measured download-size result.
How PeekIt avoids stealing Space while you type
A global Spacebar shortcut can cause trouble if it activates while someone is renaming a file in Explorer or typing into another editable field. PeekIt’s described approach is to inspect the active context before treating Space as a preview command. If an editable Explorer field has focus, the hook passes Space through instead of intercepting it for the preview action.

- Reliable Plug and Play: The USB receiver provides a reliable wireless connection up to 33 ft (1), so you can forget about drop-outs and delays and you can take it wherever you use your computer
- Type in Comfort: The design of this keyboard creates a comfortable typing experience thanks to the low-profile, quiet keys and standard layout with full-size F-keys, number pad, and arrow keys
- Durable and Resilient: This full-size wireless keyboard features a spill-resistant design (2), durable keys and sturdy tilt legs with adjustable height
- Long Battery Life: MK270 combo features a 36-month keyboard and 12-month mouse battery life (3), along with on/off switches allowing you to go months without the hassle of changing batteries
- Easy to Use: This wireless keyboard and mouse combo features 8 multimedia hotkeys for instant access to the Internet, email, play/pause, and volume so you can easily check out your favorite sites
This context check is central to making the shortcut usable: the key should preview a selected file when appropriate, but retain its ordinary typing behavior in a text field. The project article discusses a Rust-like keyboard-hook snippet, but it does not establish an independently audited reliability rate across Windows configurations.
How previews and plugins handle different formats
The article says PeekIt includes previewers for fonts, 3D models, DOCX, spreadsheets, and presentations, alongside common file categories such as images, PDFs, code, and archives. For community extensions, the author describes plugins running as isolated content in iframes and exchanging messages through postMessage.

That is an implementation description, not proof that the plugin system has been independently security-audited. Treat the isolation and messaging details as claims about the project’s design rather than a guarantee that every plugin is safe.
What happens with cloud-only OneDrive files
Files On-Demand can show a file in Windows even when its contents are not stored locally. According to kobaltGIT, PeekIt checks file attributes including FILE_ATTRIBUTE_RECALL_ON_DATA_ACCESS and SPARSE_FILE before reading contents. For a cloud-only item, the stated behavior is to show a metadata placeholder rather than trigger a download.

This behavior is reported by the project’s author; it has not been independently verified here. The article does not establish how every OneDrive state, filesystem configuration, or other cloud-storage provider is handled.
How to interpret the performance comparisons
kobaltGIT’s 2026 comparison table reports the following figures for PeekIt v1.3.2, QuickLook, and PowerToys Peek. They are all author-reported values, not independent benchmark results. The available account does not provide a test-machine configuration or a fully reproducible methodology, so the figures should not be treated as a controlled cross-product comparison.

These are the values and labels reported by kobaltGIT in 2026; the article does not supply a reproducible test procedure, so they indicate the author’s comparison rather than verified relative performance. Installer size, suite download size, memory use, and response time are different kinds of measures and should not be read as equivalent indicators of overall quality.
Project access and license claims
The author describes PeekIt as free and MIT-licensed and points readers to a repository, project site, and ZIP/MSI downloads. Current release availability, download files, and the license contents have not been independently confirmed. The project account is available at kobaltGIT’s PeekIt build article on DEV Community.
